Book Regulation of Fatty Acid and Glycerolipid Metabolism

Download or read book Regulation of Fatty Acid and Glycerolipid Metabolism written by Raymond Dils and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-18 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regulation of Fatty Acid and Glycerolipid Metabolism is a compilation of papers presented during the 11th Meeting of the Federation of European Biochemical Societies in Copenhagen in 1977. The book deals with the regulation of enzyme activity and the turnover that results from fatty acid metabolism, lipid metabolism in membranes, and disturbed fatty acid metabolism. One study presented in the book shows that cellular fatty acid synthetase levels are significantly decreased by different medium and long chain fatty acids in Candida lypolytica, a kind of yeast. The book also examines the serious incidence of increase in the rate of conversion of glucose to fatty acids when white adipose tissues from rats are exposed to insulin. The selection addresses this increase as an important example of acute hormonal regulation of fatty acid synthesis in mammalian tissues. The text also describes the enzyme adaptation to nutritional and hormonal changes and the role of lipids in membrane fusion. The book presents other studies regarding the incidence of vascular, dietary, and congenital factors on fatty acid metabolism in adipose tissue and liver that are conducted in rats. Another study suggests that hyperinsulinemia is a key factor in the development of the obesity syndrome. Microbiologists, microchemists, and laboratory researchers and scientists dealing with fat metabolism will appreciate this book.

Download or read book Plant Lipid Metabolism written by J.C. Kader and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of papers that comprehensively describe the major areas of research on lipid metabolism of plants. State-of-the-art knowledge about research on fatty acid and glycerolipid biosynthesis, isoprenoid metabolism, membrane structure and organization, lipid oxidation and degradation, lipids as intracellular and extracellular messengers, lipids and environment, oil seeds and gene technology is reviewed. The different topics covered show that modern tools of plant cellular and molecular biology, as well as molecular genetics, have been recently used to characterize several key enzymes of plant lipid metabolism (in particular, desaturases, thioesterases, fatty acid synthetase) and to isolate corresponding cDNAs and genomic clones, allowing the use of genetic engineering methods to modify the composition of membranes or storage lipids. These findings open fascinating perspectives, both for establishing the roles of lipids in membrane function and intracellular signalling and for adapting the composition of seed oil to the industrial needs. This book will be a good reference source for research scientists, advanced students and industrialists wishing to follow the considerable progress made in recent years on plant lipid metabolism and to envision the new opportunities offered by genetic engineering for the development of novel oil seeds.

Book Fatty Acid and Lipotoxicity in Obesity and Diabetes

Download or read book Fatty Acid and Lipotoxicity in Obesity and Diabetes written by Gregory R. Bock and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-03-11 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The potential lipotoxic effect of accumulation of fatty acids in non-adipose tissues is thought to be a major component in the development of insulin resistance. Chronic exposure to high concentrations of free fatty acids in the blood affects pancreatic β cell function, insulin secretion and lipid synthesis in the liver, and storage in adipose tissue. Maintaining the normal levels of fatty acids requires coordinated regulation between the liver, adipose tissue and skeletal muscle. This book deals with the molecular aspects of fatty acid action in obesity and insulin resistance. The topics include lipid metabolism and adipose tissue biology, and β cell function and insulin resistance. Chapters deal with the molecular genetics and molecular physiology of energy homeostasis.

Book Mass Spectrometry Based Lipidomics

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This detailed volume covers conventional MS-based “shotgun lipidomics” by which samples are introduced by infusion or loop injection, as well as LC-MS-based lipidomics, which are becoming increasingly important due to the ever-increasing demand for a complete and precise lipid analysis of the complex and diversified lipids in nature. The volume features protocols applying chemical reactions, the on-line photochemical reactions combined with various MS methods for comprehensive characterization of various lipid classes, and quantification of specific and rare lipids. Written for the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and practical, Mass Spectrometry-Based Lipidomics: Methods and Protocols serves as an invaluable guide for biochemists and mass spectroscopists who are interested in lipid studies.
