Download or read book Visual Pattern Discrimination in the Rat microform written by Endress, Katherine and published by National Library of Canada. This book was released on 1966 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The mamalian visual system contains a limited number of receptors, which project to a limited number of cells in the visual cortex. This projection provides a point-to-point representation of the retinal stimulation onto the visual cortex. Data reported by Marshall and Talbot (1942) suggest that contours in the environment are represented on the visual cortex by a process involving the summation of neural activity around the area receiving the retinal projection. Such anatomical and physiological evidence suggests a simple mechanism by which forms are perceived; the perception of form should correspond to retinal stimulation by form. [...]" --

Book Cue Utilization and Dimensional Preferendes in the Hooded Rat

Download or read book Cue Utilization and Dimensional Preferendes in the Hooded Rat written by Gerald Leonard Boerner and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visual problem-solving is studied in the rat. Five male, hooded rats were trained to differentially respond to one of two compound visual stimuli by differential reinforcement (VI-45 sec. vs. EXT.) The stimuli differed from each other on the basis of three dimensions: brightness, orientation, and size. The cue utilized in forming the complex operant discrimination were evaluated by tests of stimulus generalization after 28 and 32 days of training. The generalization tests presented 14 generalization stimuli, 5 stimuli on each of the three dimensions; one stimulus was common to the orthogonal dimensions. Stimulus control was obtained by the complex S= stimulus, as reflected in the ratio of S-/S+ responses approaching zero. The analysis of generalization responding to the orthogonal dimensions indicated the following: (1) stimulus control was exerted within each dimension on the first generalization test. (2) Stimulus control was exerted within the brightness dimension alone during the second generalization test. (3) There was an interaction between the generalization test (as an index of extinction) and the presence of stimulus control within a dimension. (4) The brightness dimension dominated the control of responding during both generalization tests, and (5) measures of response frequency and response latency yielded essentially the same results. The data presented are best described by the multiplicative model. In addition, the present results are consistent with the formulations of Mackintosh and Sutherland (1964) and Southerland and Holgats (1966).

Book The Effect of Stimulus Position on Visual Discrimination by the Rat

Download or read book The Effect of Stimulus Position on Visual Discrimination by the Rat written by Helen Mahut and published by . This book was released on 1952 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Pattern vision in the rat bas been most effectively studied by a jumping method devised by Lashley (1930). This procedure requires the rat to jump at one of two cards bearing the patterns to be discriminated. On the basis of Laehley0́9s extensive anatomical and behavioural studies it has been assumed that the cards fall within the rat0́9s binocular field of vision and, consequently, that they are seen as a whole at the time when the visual patterns begin to influence behaviour during discrimination learning. Ehrenfreund (1948), however, thought that the rat0́9s effective field, in the Lashley jumping apparatus, might be limited to the lower margin of the cards, and has demonstrated this experimentally in certain conditions of training. Since Ehrenfreund0́9s data have been interpreted as bearing on the current continuity-noncontinuity controversy concerning the nature of learning, his experiment is of general importance. Ehrenfreund trained his rats on a modified Lashley jumping apparatus to discriminate between an upright and an inverted triangle in two differing experimental situations. In one condition, the triangles were raised eight centimetres above the bottom margin of the cards. The platform from which the rats jumped, as in the usual procedure, remained level with the platform on which they found food. In the second, the platform was also raised, so that the rats were jumping at the centre of the cards where the triangles were now located. [...]" --
