Book Power Ideology and Control

Download or read book Power Ideology and Control written by John C. Oliga and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-08-20 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the great challenges we face today is coming to grips with "forces of power/' in both theoretical and methodological terms, in a way that prepares us for action—action that is not totally subject to existing forces. The literature has some excellent theoretical accounts of power, but these say little about what we should do. Most often they are abstract and out of reach of all but a select few. In this book, however, we have a clear-cut account of power, ideology, and control that paves the way for practic- minded people to make a genuine attempt at tackling issues of power on both organizational and societal levels. John C. Oliga suggests a division between what he calls "objectivist," "subjectivist," and "relational" perspectives. With objectivism, he refers to theories that focus on power as capacities located in social structures. These tend to be either synergistic (e.g., Parsonian collective) or conflictual (e.g., Marxian conflictual view) theoretical orientations. With subjectivism he discusses theories that focus on power possessed by agents. With rela tional approaches he places theories that conceive power as a property of interaction among social forces.

Book Management and Ideology

Download or read book Management and Ideology written by Judith A. Merkle and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its obscure beginning as a system for organizing machine shops, Scientific Management has grown into the major technocratic ideology of the twentieth century. Its development and international diffusion have influenced industrial productivity, the social fabric of industrial society, and even the nature of government. In this study of the movement's growth, Merkle compares the writings of the American, German, French, British, and Soviet vanguards of Scientific Management and finds that those who advocated efficiency engineering were considerably more than pragmatists seeking immediate technical solutions to production problems. Rather, they were visionaries who sought to reconcile class conflict, restructure government, and create a universal technocratic utopia by achieving efficient mass production and rationalized distribution. The call for a "mental revolution," which permeates their writings, found sympathizers among capitalists and socialists alike; that revolution affected not only the structure of modern industrialism but also the organization of the state itself. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1980.

Book Power and Politics in Organizations

Download or read book Power and Politics in Organizations written by Cynthia Hardy and published by Dartmouth Publishing Company. This book was released on 1995 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a collection of articles exploring the issue of power in relation to organizations. It asserts that any attempt to understand the large literature on power must extend beyond the confines of organization and management theory. The argument underlying the volume is that broad exploration is essential because management studies of power have been for the most part, severely constrained, tending to view power from a functionalist perspective. In so doing issues of how power becomes embedded in existing organizational structures, cultures, practices, rules and regulations have been ignored.
