Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions of the Old Residents' Historical Association, Lowell, Mass, Vol. 4: Organized December 21, 1868 The toll for a foot passenger was from two-thirds of a penny to one cent and five mills. It is not easy now to imagine how they made change at these rates. I remember when half cents were in circulation; but they were so scarce that they readily passed for whole cents, and perhaps that explains how the toll became two cents, as it was when I first passed over the bridge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions of the Old Residents' Historical Association, Lowell, Mass, Vol. 6: Organized December 21, 1868 During the last twelve months the Old Residents' Historical Association has completed the first quarter of a century of its existence. That the purposes for which it was organized and the objects which it has attained in placing upon permanent record a great amount and vari ety of valuable historical information relating to the city of Lowell, together with its early founders and many of the leading spirits who have encouraged its enterprises and shaped its destinies, the five volumes of its published papers very fullv attest. The Lowell of 1822, with its single system of cotton mills (the Merrimack Manu facturing Company), and its sparsely settled surround ings, with flourishing forest trees, where are now located its principal business streets and finest buildings, both public and private, and the Lowell of 1894, with its or more inhabitants, and its wonderful development of so much in art and science that pertains to the production of what may be regarded as human requirements and human necessities, is in most marked contrast. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions of the Old Residents' Historical Association, Lowell, Mass, Vol. 5: Organized December 21, 1868; No. 1 The Fletcher family to which Judge Abbott's mother belonged were English Puritans who came from Devonshire and settled in Concord, and in 1653 in Chelmsford. William Fletcher, one of these first settlers, owned a large part of the territory which in 1826 was incorporated-as the town of Lowell, and built his log cabin near where the City Farm buildings now stand. It is said that Josiah Fletcher, one off his descendants, and one of Judge Abbott's mother's ancestors married Mary Chamberlain, daughter of the man so renowned in Indian war history for having killed the famous chief, Paugus, though I do not find this in the Genealogy cf the Fletcher Family.
