Book Development Regeneration and Plasticity of the Autonomic Nervous System

Download or read book Development Regeneration and Plasticity of the Autonomic Nervous System written by George Hendry and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 631 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each volume in the Autonomic Nervous System series deals with a different area of autonomic control in health and disease. This, the second volume, provides an overview on the nature of the factors that exert constraints on the differentiation and maturation of the autonomic nervous system. Subjects covered include: development of autonomic neurones; molecules affecting nerve growth and survival; regeneration after injury; and the degree to which the wiring of the nervous system is rigid or fixed.

Book History of the Synapse

    Book Details:
  • Author : Max R. Bennett
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2003-09-02
  • ISBN : 0203302540
  • Pages : 351 pages

Download or read book History of the Synapse written by Max R. Bennett and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The History of the Synapse provides a history of those discoveries concerning the identification and function of synapses that provide the foundations for research during this new century with a personal view of the process by which new concepts have developed. Previously published as essays, the chapters in this book provide a history of various aspects of synaptic function, beginning with the evolution over two and a half thousand years and how progress was made in the establishment of a conceptual structure that would allow the synapse to be identified at the beginning of the 20th century. Numerous illustrations explain either the technical approach or the experimental finding.

Book Atlas of Interstitial Cells of Cajal in the Gastrointestinal Tract

Download or read book Atlas of Interstitial Cells of Cajal in the Gastrointestinal Tract written by Terumasa Komuro and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-04-13 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This atlas will illustrate the distribution and morphological features of interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) which are the key cells to understanding of the regulatory mechanism of gastrointestinal motility, since ICC act as both pacemaker and as intermediates in neural transmission, and since ICC show specific distribution patterns depending on their anatomical positions. All subtypes of ICC located in the different tissue layers and different levels of the gastrointestinal tract will be revealed by immunohistochemistry for Kit receptors and nerves by using mainly whole-mount stretch preparation of the guinea-pig tissues. Three-dimensional reconstruction of confocal images will particularly help the readers to understand the peculiar arrangement of ICC networks in situ and the correlation between ICC and nerves. Electron micrographs will help illustrate the characteristic features of ICC and their ultrastructural differences from fibroblasts, smooth muscles and other interstitial cells.

Book Smooth Muscle

    Book Details:
  • Author : Edwin Daniel
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-03-09
  • ISBN : 1468427512
  • Pages : 712 pages

Download or read book Smooth Muscle written by Edwin Daniel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of the actions of drugs on smooth muscle has been a preoccupation of many pharmacologists almost from the beginning of the discipline. To a con siderable degree, the development of theories to explain drug actions on smooth muscle has occurred somewhat independently of the development of our knowledge of the physiology, biochemistry, and biophysics of smooth muscle. This knowledge has developed rapidly in the past decade, and some of its consequences for our understanding of drug-receptor interactions in smooth muscle have not always been fully appreciated or accepted. One of the purposes of this volume is to provide pharmacologists with some understanding of the physiology, biophysics, and bio chemistry of smooth muscle and of related advances in methodology so as to facilitate the incorporation of such knowledge and related methods into future pharmacological studies of smooth muscle and drug interactions. Another purpose of the book is to provide both graduate students and in vestigators in pharmacology and related disciplines with a summary of the numerous methods that have evolved or are available for the study of drug and smooth muscle interactions, and, in particular, to highlight their possible uses and limitations. Perhaps, because of the diversity in content and difficulty of these methods, there has to our knowledge never been a previous attempt to bring them together in one place. We have not, of course, succeeded entirely in this objective.

Book Cerebellar Dentate Nucleus

Download or read book Cerebellar Dentate Nucleus written by V. Chan-Palay and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-20 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent physiologic investigations have shown that the deep cerebellar nuclei may play an important role in the initiation and monitoring of skilled move ments. Much of this physiologic work has been carried out in the absence of a secure foundation in neuroanatomical information. Although the main sources of the afferent fibers and the major terminations of the efferent fibers related to these nuclei have been known for many years, remarkably little information about the organization of the nuclei themselves has been collected. The kinds of nerve cells, their arrangement within the nuclei, the patterns of their dendritic arborizations, the distribution of incoming fibers among the neurons, the relationship between the outgoing nerve fibers and the nerve cells from which they originate - these and many other morphologic features were either unknown or only superficially explored. In fact, so little was known about the deep cerebellar nuclei when I began to work on this subject that the investigations reported here are virtually without antecedents, a refreshing change from the cerebellar cortex which has been repeatedly and exhaustively surveyed. My studies on the cerebellar nuclei began in the spring of 1972. They were initiated with the intent of applying the principles of analysis that had been developed for the cerebellar cortex to a different but related part of the brain.
