Book excerpt: Les recherches effectuées dans le cadre de la présente thèse avaient pour objectif d'étudier le rayonnement sonore émis lors de la rupture des corps solides fragiles. A cet effet, il a été nécessaire de mener une étude permettant d'établir une certaine corrélation entre les paramètres caractérisant l'onde acoustique émise et les différentes propriétés structurales et géométriques du corps considéré. Cette corrélation permet d'obtenir plus de renseignements sur le rayonnement émis, de mieux le caractériser, de mieux comprendre le phénomène qui se développe en engendrant ce rayonnement, etc. Cette étude a pu être réalisée grâce a une approche empirique adéquate: une sollicitation mécanique par flexion simple (3 points), une acquisition simultanée des évènements mécaniques et acoustiques et, enfin, une analyse des signaux couplée à un traitement statistique. L'ensemble des résultats obtenus a montré que le rayonnement sonore émis apporte des informations sur la structure et les dimensions du corps. Autrement dit, différents modèles empiriques ont pu être établis entre les deux types de paramètres acoustiques et mécaniques. Les différentes corrélations suggèrent que l'émission acoustique peut bien être utilisée pour caractériser un produit donne en parallèle ou à la place des caractéristiques communément mesurées (mécanique par exemple). Enfin, il est ici important de souligner que ces recherches pourraient aboutir à la définition d'une nouvelle méthode de caractérisation d'un matériau solide fragile dont nous avons développé les grands axes dans cette thèse.
