Book excerpt: Le procédé PUREX utilisé pour le traitement des combustibles nucléaires usés est basé sur une série de réactions rédox couplées aux différences d’extraction des actinides par le tri-n-butylphosphate (TBP). L’existence d’espèces oxydantes (notamment HNO2) dans le système biphasique est responsable d’une instabilité thermodynamique de l’uranium(IV) et du plutonium(III).L’objectif principal de ces travaux de thèse est de consolider les connaissances de la chimie rédox de U et Pu dans les milieux aqueux (acide nitrique) et organique (TBP30%/n-dodécane). Les paramètres expérimentaux requis pour obtenir des données exploitables cinétiquement sont définis.En milieu aqueux nitrique et organique, l’oxydation de U(IV) par HNO2 est régie par un mécanisme autocatalytique pour lequel la production d’acide nitreux est proportionnelle à la quantité d’U(IV) oxydée.La variation des concentrations d’acide nitreux au cours de la réaction limite largement le nombre de données exploitables. Il a néanmoins été vérifié, en milieu aqueux, une augmentation des vitesses avec les concentrations d’U(IV), d’acide nitreux et de nitrate ; une diminution est obtenue avec l’augmentation de l’acidité du milieu. Il est proposé, en milieu organique, des conditions expérimentales favorables à l’obtention des résultats exploitables.L’étude de Pu(III) en milieu organique nitrique a permis l’instabilité de cette espèce à température ambiante. Sa stabilisation requiert des conditions spécifiques (expérimentalement et chimiquement). Les acquisitions expérimentales permettent de vérifier le caractère autocatalytique de l’oxydation de Pu(III), et l’influence prépondérante des concentrations initiales de Pu(III)
