Book A Comparative Typology of English and German

Download or read book A Comparative Typology of English and German written by John A. Hawkins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1986, this book draws together analyses of English and German. It defines the contrasts and similarities between the two languages and, in particular, looks at the question of whether contrasts in one area of the grammar is systematically related to contrasts in another, and whether there is any ‘directionality’ or unity to contrast throughout grammar as a whole. It is suggested that there is, and that English and German can serve as a case study for a more general typology of languages than we now have. This volume will be of interest to a wide range of linguists, including students of Germanic languages; language typologists; generative grammarians attempting to ‘fix the parameters’ on language variation;’ historical linguists; and applied linguists.

Book Basic Structural Differences Within a Linguistic Comparison of English and German Grammar

Download or read book Basic Structural Differences Within a Linguistic Comparison of English and German Grammar written by Theresa Schmidt and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2010 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Comparative Literature, grade: 1,7, http: //www.uni-jena.de/ (Institut für Anglistik/Amerikanistik), course: HpS Contrastive Linguistics, language: English, abstract: Introduction Since German and English both belong to the same family of languages, i.e. West Germanic, they are - at least, from an historical point of view - closely related languages. By investigating their respective grammatical structures it is to be discussed whether the existing structural contrasts between English and German grammar are related as well. Within this paper the most general and basic of the occurring differences will be summarised and analysed by taking John Hawkins' A Comparative Typology of English and German. Unifying the Contrasts as a basic source. Hawkins argues that where German and English contrast the latter tends to show less correspondence between form and meaning. This is due to his central hypothesis which says that it is possible to establish general principles which unite the major contrasts between both languages (cf. 4). Hawkins assumes that the differences within the grammatical structures are not accidental ones; they are rather systematic and can be traced back to one "ultimate trigger " (5) in the history of the English language - phonological changes which caused all further structural differences as either direct or indirect consequences of this process (cf. 5-7). The attempt of this paper is to draw conclusions from this knowledge of the common historical background and apply it to the modern "versions" of the German and English language and the major patterns of variation. To get a descriptive and lucid image of the contrasts between the two languages, we first start on the level of individual words by considering their morphological structure, i.e. we will examine the inflection of the verb and the case marking of noun phrases. This will lead us directly to questi

Book A Contrastive Analysis of the English and the German Present Perfect Tense and their Main Declarative Clauses

Download or read book A Contrastive Analysis of the English and the German Present Perfect Tense and their Main Declarative Clauses written by Jenny Streb and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2018-06-20 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2017 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,3, University of Mannheim, language: English, abstract: This paper is going to provide an insight into contrasts between the English and German language. Due to a shared origin from the Indo-European languages, the two languages are perceived to be similar enough to have sufficient things in common in order to establish comparability but are at the same time also distinctive enough to show significant contrasts. The essential theme of this paper argues that English and German may exhibit formal parallels on the surface, however, accommodate very different underlying usages and internal structures. Due to a limited length of this paper the discussion of contrasts is restricted to the resultative and narrative usage of the Present Perfect tense as well as to declarative main clauses in the syntax.

Book excerpt: Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2003 im Fachbereich Anglistik - Komparatistik, Note: 1,00, Freie Universit t Berlin (Institut f r Englische Philologie), Veranstaltung: Understanding English-German Contrasts, 28 Quellen im Literaturverzeichnis, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Within the last two decades many attempts have been made to define a generally accepted concept of universal temporal and aspectual systems. There are comprehensive studies about the grammatical functions of tense and aspect, their categories and their meaning. In regard to their tense systems, English and German show amazing parallels in the inventory of forms but there are major differences in their use and function. The following paper gives an overview of English and German tense and aspect systems and presents traditional and current theories and controversies on them. Moreover, an attempt will be made to discuss in detail function and use of the perfect, future and progressive construction in these two languages.

Book GECCo German English Contrasts in Cohesion

Download or read book GECCo German English Contrasts in Cohesion written by Kerstin Kunz and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In contrastive linguistics of English and German, there is a tradition of accounting for contrasts with respect to grammar and, to a lesser extent, for lexis and phonetics. Moving on to discourse and text, there is a sizeable body of literature on cohesive patterns in English and German respectively - but very little in terms of a comparison. The latter, though, is of particular interest for language learners, translators and, of course, linguists and researchers in language technology. This book attempts to close this gap, based on a number of years of corpus-based study into variation and cohesion in the two languages. While there is an overall focus on language contrasts, it also investigates variation between different registers language-internally, and between written and spoken mode in particular. For each of the five major types of cohesion (co-reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunctive relations and lexical cohesion), overviews are given of contrasts in the system and of contrastive frequencies in texts. Results and methods presented in this book are thus relevant for language teaching, translation, language technology and corpus-based work on English and German generally.

Book The Syntax of German

Download or read book The Syntax of German written by Hubert Haider and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-08-31 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do you know, if you know that a language has 'Object Verb' structure rather than 'Verb Object'? Answering this question and many others, this book provides an essential guide to the syntactic structure of German. It examines the systematic differences between German and English, which follow from this basic difference in sentence structure, and presents the main results of syntactic research on German. Topics covered include the strict word order in VO vs word order variation in OV, verb clustering, clause union effects, obligatory functional subject position, and subject-object asymmetries for extractions. Through this, a cross-model and cross-linguistic comparison evolves, highlighting the immediate implications for non-Germanic OV languages, and creating a detailed and comprehensive description of the syntactic differences that immediately follow from an OV type in contrast with a VO type like English. It will be of interest to all those interested in syntax and Germanic languages.

Download or read book A Short Comparative Grammar of English and German written by Victor Henry and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short Comparative Grammar of English and German: As Traced Back to Their Common Origin and Contrasted With the Classical Languages The French edition of this work, published in November, 1893 (Paris, Hachette), was reviewed shortly afterwards in the, Academy (no. 1131), in so friendly and sympathetic a spirit that I feel bound to express my gratitude to the anonymous critic, both for the valuable suggestions he made, and for the praise he gave to my book. Of the former I have, as he will perceive, availed myself as far as possible, and have deferred to his opinion in almost every case. There is, however, one point on which he appears to have misjudged me ; he evidently missed the note on page 23 (p. 21 of this translation), and was therefore led to suppose that I had stated as a fact that an r-vowel actually existed in English. The confusion is only apparent; for the sake of brevity I thought it advisable not to separate the English final r from the other English and from the German final liquids and nasals, but at the same time I reminded my French readers that the r in this position had become an untrilled vowel, and I referred them for further details to a subsequent section. And I am still inclined to believe this course the best for my purpose, especially when we take into consideration the fact, of which there is hardly any doubt, that as recently as two centuries ago the r was no less trilled in mother than it is at the present day in raven.
