L'id e est la suivante: l'observation des formes de galaxies distantes qui ont t d form es gravitationnellement par des galaxies d'avant-plan nous permet de contraindre la distribution de masse des galaxies d'avant-plan. Etant donn que la distortion d'une galaxie lentille sur une galaxie distante est tr s faible devant la largeur de la distribution en ellipticit des galaxies, la seule fa on de mesurer cet effet est de consid rer le probl me statistiquement. Par cons quent, l'optique gravitationnelle permet de contraindre les propri t s d'une population de halo de mati re noire, et la significance des contraintes d pendra du nombre de paires avant-plan/arri re- plan. Je pr sente une tude th orique du ph nom ne, en appliquant une m thode de maximum de vraisemblance sur des donn es simul es, et en introduisant des profils de masse d crivant les halos de galaxies. Une conséquence directe est alors l'effet de lentille gravitationnelle: les images de sources situées en arrière-plan d'un objet massif sur la ligne de visée sont déformées, amplifiées voire démultipliées. Les amas de galaxies, structures les plus massives de l'univers, produisent l'effet le plus intense. Leur histoire, leur processus de formation, et leur état dynamique actuel constituent des éléments clés pour comprendre la formation et l'évolution de l'univers lui-même. La présente thèse se propose de comprendre et de contraindre la distribution de masse d'un échantillon d'amas de galaxies telle que l'on peut la mesurer grâce à l'effet de lentille gravitationnelle faible, par le biais d'une étude statistique des objets faiblement déformés permettant de mesurer l'intensité de la distorsion.

Afin de réaliser cette étude, nous utilisons l'effet de cisaillement gravitationnel faible dans le champ COSMOS. Les halos de matière noire sont suffisamment massifs pour agir en tant que lentille gravitationnelle et dévier les rayons lumineux envoyés par les galaxies lointaines d'arrière plan. Etant donné que la distorsion d'une galaxie lentille sur une galaxie distante est très petite devant la largeur de la distribution en ellipticité des galaxies, la seule façon de mesurer cet effet est de considérer le problème statistiquement. Un avantage de cette approche statistique est qu'elle permet de sonder le potentiel gravitationnel des halos de galaxies jusqu'à un rayon très grand ou les méthodes plus traditionnelles ne sont pas applicables.

Book excerpt: Le cisaillement gravitationnel cosmologique (ou cosmic shear) induit par les grandes structures de l'Univers engendre un champ de distorsion qui modifie l'ellipticité apparente des galaxies. Les propriétés statistiques de ce champ en fonction de l'échelle angulaire reflétent celles du spectre de puissance de la matiére noire projeté sur la ligne de visée et peuvent être exploitées pour contraindre les paramétres cosmologiques. Dans cette thése, j'explore les effets de distorsion gravitationnelle ultra-faible induits par les trés grandes échelles, d'une minute d'arc jusqu'à 4 degrés, de la distribution des structures de l'Univers. Pour cela j'utilise les données des trois premiéres années d'observation du CFHTLS Wide. Les résutats des analyses du cosmic shear apportent des contraintes fortes sur la relation entre la normalisation du spectre de puissance de la matiére, \sigma_8, et son paramétre de densité, \Omega_m. En supposant un univers plat, l'analyse de la fonction àdeux points donne \sigma_85(\Omega_m/0.25)^0.64 = 0.785 +- 0.043, en utilisant un filtre compensé de type aperture-mass et en couvrant l'ensemble des échelles [1';230']. Ces résultats sont en excellents accord avec ceux de WMAP3. Avec de telles échelles, on peut alors contraindre les paramétres cosmologiques en utilisant pour la premiére fois des mesures de cisaillement gravitationnel dans le régime linéaire.

His first assignment was with the University of Paris VI before he was appointed to the CNRS, the French National Research Center. His research was focused on optical pumping, statistical mechanics of quantum gases, musical acoustics and the foundations of quantum mechanics.
