Readers may be surprised to discover that even the terminology of "dispensationalists" and "covenant theologians" originated in the 1930s' disputes; that the majority of the original protagonists on both sides were Presbyterians; and that soteriology, rather than eschatology, was the original bone of contention between them. This study examines how two respective strands of fundamentalism came to identify one another as theological rivals as they each vied for position in their recently formed separatist bodies. The significance of disagreements over "dispensationalism" is explored in the founding of the Orthodox Presbyterian and Bible Presbyterian churches. And then, as the debate traveled southward, the response of the PCUS is examined, with special attention given to the consummative reports of an ad hoc committee that found "dispensationalism" to be out of harmony with the Westminster doctrinal standards. Significant misunderstandings that impeded fruitful dialogue from the beginning are clarified, particularly those that have persisted most stubbornly to the present day. Perhaps most surprising of all, the reader will discover that nearly all of the original points of debate between dispensationalists and covenant theologians have since been resolved, as each side has honed its position in light of pertinent critiques. Why has this development gone almost unnoticed? This study suggests an answer, and proposes that understanding how the feud began may hold the key to rapprochement today.

Throughout the history of the church it has been commonly held that the covenants God made with Israel and the promises God gave to that nation now belong to the Christian church. The supersession controversy is not an obscure theological debate of interest only to a few Biblical scholars. It involves questions of fundamental importance. Does the God of the Christian Scriptures keep His promises? What are the rules that guide our interpretation of Scripture? Is Christian theology responsible for the horrors of anti-Semitism in Christian lands? The Biblical focus of this controversy is the 11th chapter of the book of Romans. There the Apostle Paul courageously addresses the supersession issue. Tarrell invites the reader to feast on the riches of Pauls teaching on the atonement (Romans 1-8) and to celebrate so great a salvation. But he also invites the reader to embrace Pauls teaching about Israel (Romans 9-11). Gods gift of salvation is precious and is thoroughly explained in the first 8 chapters of Romans. But to prove the thesis of the book of Romans Paul tackles the most daunting problem of all, the apparent inability of God to fulfill the promises He made to the nation of Israel. Bringing up the problem of Israel is a gutsy move. But it is the problem that must be addressed.

The Antiochenes have often been described as strictly historical-literal exegetes in contrast to the allegorical exegesis of the Alexandrians. Patristic scholars now challenge those stereotypes, some even arguing that few differences existed between the two groups. This work agrees that both schools were concerned with a literal and spiritual reading. But, it also tries to show, through analysis of Theodore and Theodorets exegesis and use of the term theria, that how they integrated the literal-theological readings often remained quite distinct from the Alexandrians. For the Antiochenes, the term theria did not mean allegory, but instead stood for a range of perceptionsprophetic, christological, and contemporary. It is in these insights that we find the deep wisdom to help modern readers interpret Scripture theologically.

These signs identify believers with Christ and his people. They are integral to the existence, membership, and discipline of the local church. In answer to the question “Who can take the Lord’s Supper?” this book catalogues four major positions in the broad Baptist tradition. While proponents of various views have appealed to the necessity of circumcision for participation in Passover as evidence for their position, none have adequately worked out the covenantal relationships between circumcision and baptism or Passover and the Lord’s Supper. By contrast to Reformed pedobaptist covenantal theology and in distinction from Baptist covenantal theology and dispensational theologies, this book develops the relation of these covenantal signs from a progressive-covenantal perspective. It presents an unprecedented comparison of the continuities and discontinuities between the covenant signs across the storyline of Scripture to demonstrate a biblical-theological principle that the sign of entry should precede the sign of participation.

Quality-Adjusted Life Years (QALYs) is one of the primary methods of guiding many medical decision-makers in the allocation of limited medical resources. Herein lies the problem of medicine and economics. It seems that deciding who will receive limited medical resources is a task filled with moral and ethical difficulties, even for those depending on the information obtained from QALY calculations. These moral and ethical difficulties are beyond the scope of sound bites that tout the benefits of universal health care, affordable insurance, or the safety of the free-market economy. The breadth of the difficulty is found in the widespread disagreement concerning how the health-care system should be distributed or fixed, since most will agree that there is a problem with distributing medical resources. It seemed obvious that some difficult decisions will need to be made that few are both willing and able to make. This difficulty is particularly true in decisions about health-care allocation, and that is where QALYs have been found useful and problematic. Limiting medical care for the elderly based upon their age did not occur until the mid-twentieth century possibly because the elderly held a unique position of respect in the Western community. It is no longer the case that the elderly are given a unique position of respect and dignity. Rather, it seems that with the increased use of QALY calculations, the elderly are in danger of receiving less medical care than they are warranted. It is imperative that Christians respond to the ethical implications of significant models of resource allocation that currently assist decision-makers in the allocation process, such as QALYs.
