Book Poverty Alleviation in Tanzania

Download or read book Poverty Alleviation in Tanzania written by Mboya S. D. Bagachwa and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poverty and destitution continue to be pervasive in development. Recent surveys have revealed that in Tanzania, over fifty percent of the population still live in poverty and about one-tenth of the households are severely undernourished. In response to the world-wide growing concerns about poverty and since sustainable poverty reduction continues to be one of Tanzania's major development goals, a long term research programme in Tanzania is proposed. A workshop, as a first step, was held in 1994, intended to establish consensus over the selected theme and sub-themes and to discuss and establish a broad-based but focused research agenda. The seven papers from the workshop form this book.

Book Adjustment and Poverty in Tanzania

Download or read book Adjustment and Poverty in Tanzania written by Joe Lugalla and published by Lit Verlag. This book was released on 1995 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, author Joe Lugalla looks at the relationship between adjustment policies and poverty in Tanzania. He understands Tanzanian poverty in the context of dominant social relations of inequality and not in terms of poverty lines. Lugalla's main argument is that adjustment policies are intensifying these relations in Tanzania rather than reducing or eliminating them. He concludes that adjustment policies are not able to solve but create and even intensify poverty in Tanzania.

Book Poverty Class and Gender in Rural Africa

Download or read book Poverty Class and Gender in Rural Africa written by John Sender and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-11-26 with total page 212 pages. Book excerpt: Focussing on a Fieldwork study of the West Usambaras in Tanzania, this study, first published in 1990, deals with processes of class formation and capitalist accumulation, and the dynamics of rural poverty and gender relations. Arguing that rural differentiation is systematically reinforced by the socialist state, the authors offer a critique of government intervention and discuss alternative, more effective forms of policy.

Book Translating Growth into Poverty Reduction

Download or read book Translating Growth into Poverty Reduction written by Flora Kessy and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2013-03-29 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tanzania is a politically stable, much aided country that has consistently grown economically during the first decade of the millennium, while also improving its human development indicators. However, poverty has remained persistent, particularly within rural areas. This collaborative work delves into the reasons why this is so and what can be done to improve the record. The book is the product of both Tanzanian and international poverty experts, based on largely qualitative research undertaken within Tanzania by the Chronic Poverty Research Centre (CPRC). The authors highlight and discuss the importance of macro- and micro-level causes of the persistence of poverty. The latter, on which the book is focused, centre around a negative dynamic affecting a large number of poor households in which widespread failure to provide household food security undermines gender relationships and reduces the possibility of saving and asset accumulation which is necessary for escaping poverty. This results in very low upward mobility. Vulnerability is widespread and resilience against shocks minimal, even for those who are not absolutely poor. Through an in-depth and broad analysis of poverty in Tanzania, the book provides alternative conclusions to those often repeated in the poverty discourse in international and local arenas. The conclusions were reached with the specific aim of informing political and policy debates within Tanzania.

Book Tanzania at the Turn of the Century

Download or read book Tanzania at the Turn of the Century written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study builds on lessons from Tanzania's development experience of the past four decades, with emphasis on the period following the 1996 Country Economic Memorandum, which focused on the challenge of reforms, in particular the impact of reforms on growth, incomes, and welfare in the country. The study assesses Tanzania's current development status against the country's ambition, since independence, to rid the nation of three archenemies: poverty, ignorance, and disease. Structural transformation has been extremely limited, with agriculture still dominating the economy, a non-diversified economy that hampers flexibility to withstand shock occurrences. Nonetheless, the country intensified macroeconomic policy reforms, significantly stabilizing the economy, with falling inflation levels, climbing foreign exchange reserves, and an overall fiscal balance. But the main factors identified behind the slow development progress, are primarily inadequate capital accumulation, and productivity growth; poor support for the transformation of agriculture; disrupted progress in building human capital; and, delayed demographic transition. However, the steady progress in reorienting its economy to a market-based operation, is creating space for exploiting the large potential of private sector initiative. It is emphasized that growth will only be sustainable, if firmly rooted in exploiting the domestic resource base, international competitiveness, and an aggressive pursuit of new export opportunities. -- Publisher description.

Book The Impact of Institutional Reforms on Poverty and Inequality in Tanzania

Download or read book The Impact of Institutional Reforms on Poverty and Inequality in Tanzania written by Godfrey Sansa and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poverty is a historical development curse in Tanzania, which has incited extensive institutional reforms and policy changes and received numerous analyses in development research literature. Paradoxically, taking actions to study and alleviate poverty have increased with its continuing severity. A substantial body of research on poverty in the country suggests that, the vast majority of these studies focus on the content rather than the context of poverty alleviation processes. Specifically, the focus has been on: ideas, interests and struggles for resources between political leaders and bureaucrats believed to be taking place at the expense of the poor; ill-informed and unrealistic development policies and strategies; anti-development behaviour and tendencies of the peasants and their alleged conservatism and resistance to modernity, and weak incentive structures of the economy. There is little focus on the character and dynamics of the (historical) institutional context in which these economic conditions, struggles and policy initiatives emerge and take place. Motivated by the disappointing results of anti-poverty initiatives and weaknesses of previous studies, this study uses historical institutional impact analysis guided by institutionalist theory to analyse the problem. The central argument is that the existence and functioning character of institutions are necessary conditions for any human development activity. So, acceptance of the crucial importance of historically oriented institutional context analysis in understanding poverty alleviation initiatives and outcomes is imperative. The study draws on primary and secondary data collected through documentary review and interview methods to explain the ways in which institutional reforms result in an institutional order tolerant of poverty and which create conditions that perpetuate it. It does this by exploring the mode of historical institutional development and by examining the functioning character of the institutional order in respect of poverty alleviation. The study argues that achieving success in poverty alleviation related reforms is dependent on proper understanding of institutional realities of Tanzanian society and the functioning character of the existing institutional order. It proposes a reform process in which institutional legacies and their impact on society become the focus of the reform process itself. The findings indicate that, while reforms and policy changes have taken place and new patterns of behaviour introduced, the logics of institutions central to development and poverty alleviation have not, been fundamentally altered and new patterns of behaviour have simply perpetuated it. Specifically, the findings suggest: first, that institutional reforms pursued by the government are inadequate due to misconception of institutional problems of Tanzanian society; second, that the reforms have created new conditions which perpetuate poverty; and, third, that fundamental character of the functioning of the Tanzanian institutional order will need to change before such anti-poverty measures can hope to succeed. Thus, the study offers a correction to ill-informed poverty analysis by providing an alternative account of the root cause of poverty while insisting that a better understanding of the failure of poverty alleviation requires a strong focus on the historical institutional realties of the country.

Book The Role of Tourism in Poverty Alleviation in Tanzania

Download or read book The Role of Tourism in Poverty Alleviation in Tanzania written by N. E. Luvanga and published by Mkuki Na Nyota Publ.. This book was released on 2003 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global trends have led to a marked decline in the role of the state in national development. Part of the Research on Poverty Alleviation series, aiming to deepen the understanding of the causes, extent, nature, rate of change and means of combating poverty in Tanzania. This paper argues that a higher economic growth rate that is pro-poor is a prerequisite for poverty alleviation. Rapid growth of the tourism sector is postulated as an important instrument of poverty alleviation, the creation of jobs, the sales of goods and services, support of the cultural industries and source of foreign exchange. The study however demonstrates the flip-side of tourism: that it is a complex industry often driven by the private sector to benefit international companies rather than local economies and causing environmental degradation. It concludes that more research is needed into the impact of tourism on the livelihoods of the locals and to ensure that as Tanzania becomes a major tourist destination, the industry is harnessed to alleviate poverty and improve livelihoods.
