Book excerpt: INTRODUCTION Starting from the 1950s, Thailand had experienced unprecedented economic boom in the nation’s history until the 1980s. The average annual growth in the 1960s was 8%, 7%in the 1970s, and 4-6% in the beginning of the 1980s [1]. Thai people, especially those who are in the nation’s capital, Bangkok, enjoyed the economic boom and started to have “modernized” lifestyle. However, behind the scene of the national economic success, rural villages were forced to face predicament because of the urbancentered industrial economy based on neo-liberal economic beliefs. In light of the historical context of the relationship between Thai community and the high-powered state authority, examining one specific community which is struggling to find a way of development in the globalized world today will be of great help to understand the contemporary notion of rural development in Thailand. In this paper, focus is centered on a village called Mae Kampong, which has been under great influence of the Royal project and the Government in terms of development, and yet has a great deal of potential for achieving a selfreliant way of community governance because of its traits as a traditional agrarian rural community. This paper aims to examine the socio-cultural changes that occurred in the village over the course of the contemporary development and ultimately the outlook of community self-sufficiency and selfreliance, deploying a realistic and empirical approach to look at the Thailand’s contemporary phenomena happening in the rural communities. Mae Kampong is the third village of seven villages in Huai Kaew sub-district, Mae On district, Chiang Mai province, Northern Thailand, known as a major producer of Northern Thai traditional tea product called Mieng. It is located east of Chiang Mai province, about 50 kilometers from the city, average 1,300 meters above the sea level. It has been about 100 years since the first generation of this village that had been searching for suitable places for tea cultivation came from nearby areas to settle in the location and started to form the community. Now, the village has 134 households and 374 people in total. The village consists of six clusters, Pang Nok, Pang Klang, Pang Khon, Pang Ton, Pan Nai No.1, and Pang Nai No.2.

This Northern-centric approach largely fails to provide a meaningful understanding of Southern movements because it is not directly applicable to the differing historical backgrounds, culture and socio-economic structures found in the South. Much of the uniqueness and complexity of Southern social movements has therefore been overlooked. This collection analyses recent events and developments in Southern social movements, introducing well-researched case studies from fifteen countries of the global South. Arranged in two parts, the volume examines firstly movements which focus on rights and quality of life issues, and secondly the post-2011 wave of uprisings which started with Tunisian and Egyptian movements. Contributing to ongoing discussions about the Northern-centric nature of social movement theory and the social sciences more generally, the authors enter into dialogue with the debate on local and national levels, as well as globalizing processes. Over and above these mysterious practices and ancient customs, modern Thailand is a product of the late Great Rama IX Bhumibol Adulyadej. Most Thai people have only known one King. Born in Europe and educated during World War II, Bhumibol was the son of a Harvard medical doctor who had a penchant for jazz music and fast cars. When he returned to Thailand in 1951 to assume his royal duties, he could hardly speak Thai but his French and German were remarkable. Bhumibol had inherited an impoverished country with nothing but a symbolic role as a figurehead monarch. He was surrounded by envious courtiers and royals from other families now sidelined by the rise of the Chakri. Scheming generals and authoritarian field marshals were emptying the Kingdom’s coffers. Using guile and wit, Bhumibol had turned the tide by 1973. He became the most powerful modern warlord in the history of the Kingdom. He survived attempted murder, crafty politicians, corrupt generals, sycophantic courtiers and impoverished masses. When he died on October 13 2016, Bhumibol was already the longest standing monarch in the world. King Bhumibol was deeply respected and well-liked by farang and locals alike. Despite his massive social and economic achievements many problems continue to plague the Kingdom. These are prostitution, human rights issues, pollution, corruption, cronyism in Chinese businesses, border conflicts with Cambodia, and the refugee problem. This book examines the role of Rama IX and the variegated set of problems that persist in life under the great white elephant and mango trees. Rappa draws from his primary research that includes interviews, surveys and first-hand observations of a remarkable kingdom and a uniquely remarkable king to reveal the internal security threats to democracy and civil society in the oldest Southeast Asian kingdom in late modernity.

The author considers Thailand’s tolerance of prostitution and sex trafficking, despite criminalising prostitution since 1960. In doing so, they explain how criminalising prostitution does not lower the odds of women and girls engaging in commercial sex, but rather, legally marginalises them from receiving the necessary social and healthcare support.
