Book Retelling the Past in Contemporary Greek Literature Film and Popular Culture

Download or read book Retelling the Past in Contemporary Greek Literature Film and Popular Culture written by Trine Stauning Willert and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-01-22 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with historical consciousness and its artistic expressions in contemporary Greece since 1989 from the point of view that contemporary Greeks have been faced with the contradictions between on the one hand a glorious, world-famous yet distant past and, on the other, a traumatic contemporary history of wars, expulsions, civil strife and political and economic crises. Such clashes of imaginary identifications and collective traumas call for interpretations not only from historians but also from artists and storytellers. Therefore, the chapters in this volume explore the ways in which sensitive and creative perspectives of art approach and appropriate history in Greece. Through a rich collection of analytical case studies and creative reflections on Greece’s past, present, and future this volume presents the reader with the ways a set of contemporary Greek storytellers in different genres have incorporated previously under-explored or little-known themes, events, and epochs in modern Greek history showing how the past, by being interpreted and represented in the present, can teach us a lot about contemporary Greek society. The themes that form the point of departure for the stories told or retold cover various significant components of Greek history and culture such as ancient myths, the Ottoman period, the Greek War of Independence and the Greek Civil War, but also less prominent or known aspects of Greek history such as the Greek Enlightenment, the long and tragic history of Greek Jewry, and migration to and from Greece.

  • Pages : 491 pages

Download or read book Greek Art written by John Boardman and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Boardman has updated his classic account of one of the most popular historic artistic traditions among Western audiences. In the twenty years since the last edition was released, valuable evidence has come to light which has dramatically enhanced our understanding of the art of this ancient civilization. We now know conclusively that Greeks in fact lavished their sculptures with realistic colour paint, and also worked with a wealth of other materials on a major scale, including wood and precious metals, proving that our view of classic pure white marble of the age is a Renaissance construction. We can identify the work of individual artists, and schools of artists, and have a clearer picture than ever of how art and artistic ideas travelled throughout the Greek world. Boardman encourages the reader to consider the beautiful pieces that have been preserved in their original context, rather than as the isolated installations of our modern galleries, weaving into the discussion of the art objects insights into the society that produced them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uses and Abuses of Culture: Greece 1974–2010 presents a new perspective on the ongoing crisis and the broader debate concerning the case of Greece. It examines contemporary perceptions of Greek identity and cultural memory as salient factors of this crisis. The book focuses on the era that began with the fall of the dictatorship in Greece, in 1974, and investigates previous and current pathologies of Greek society in relation to the ways they affected the understanding of the term ‘culture’ up to and including the year 2010. The chapters are structured around pivotal political and social events, and highlight characteristic examples of contemporary visual culture; these encapsulate the tendencies, attitudes, values and ethics of modern Greek society. The book examines issues of cultural identity and collective memory, and explores phenomena of authority and censorship. It argues that participation in culture is equally due to the power of antiquity as well as to the new social values of distinction. A key area of the research centres on the contradictions and conflicts between intrinsic components of Greek cultural and national identities and its adopted European identity, the latter gradually formulated upon Greece’s entry into the European Community in 1981.
