Book Contemporary Bali

Download or read book Contemporary Bali written by Agung Wardana and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-25 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive examination of spatial and environmental governance in contemporary Bali. In the era of decentralisation, Bali's eight district governments and one municipality acquired a strong sense of authority to extract revenues from within their territorial borders while disregarding the impacts beyond them which has exacerbated environmental, cultural and institutional issues. These issues are addressed through reorganising space. In reality, however, such re-organisation has predominantly been in order to provide space for tourism investments and market expansion. The outcomes of reorganising space are in fact shaped by the dynamics of power that interface with increasingly complex legal and institutional structures. These complex structures provide more arenas for vested interests to manoeuvre, but at the same time provide different forms of legitimacy for local forces to challenge the dominant process. The book demonstrates the mechanisms through which social actors mobilise legal-institutional arrangements to advance their interests.

Book Performing Contemporary Indonesia

Download or read book Performing Contemporary Indonesia written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-02-04 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performance events have long had a central place in Indonesian societies in displaying power, affirming social relations, celebrating shared values, and at times conveying potent political critique. How have they responded to the momentous social and political changes of recent years - the dismantling of the centralised, authoritarian Suharto regime and its replacement with a more open, regionally-focused political system, the rapid expansion of global cultural influence? Investigations of diverse performance genres from different regions illustrate the way general socio-political processes play out locally, and how particular groups are responding. Exploring performed understandings of identity and community, such studies expand knowledge of a complex, contested period of change in Indonesia and the workings of contemporary performance in giving it expression. With contributions by Chua Beng Huat, Alexandra Crosby, Barbara Hatley, Ariel Heryanto, Brett Hough, Rachmah Ida, Reza Idria, Edwin Jurriens, Yoshi Fajar Kresno Murti, Neneng Yanti K Lahpan, Ugoran Prasad, Wawan Sofwan, Aline Scott-Maxwell, Fridus Steijlen, Alia Swastika, Denise Varney.

Bali has long been a creative inspiration for the world—providing exciting new design ideas that are emulated today in homes and hotels around the globe. The open to the elements bathroom with interior courtyard garden, the giant bamboo sofa with handwoven cushion covers, and the garden pavilion or bale with raised platform seating are all examples of concepts that originated on the island. All these—and much more—may be viewed in Bali By Design. Bali By Designs provides coverage of the latest and best design work in Bali today. Featuring 25 stunning contemporary homes, it showcases the ideas of a new generation of talented international and Indonesian designers. Each of these extraordinary houses presents new solutions for age-old challenges—illustrating how stylish modern lifestyles may be achieved through clever architecture and interior design. See the selection of artful furniture and furnishings in open, airy rooms, the inclusion of natural stone in shady courtyards and swimming pools, and the plethora of handcrafted surfaces, objects and artifacts. Many of these Balinese houses explore ways of reducing power consumption for a more sustainable, low-carbon future. Others present a modern urban version of the tropical Bali interior design style that has its roots in a traditional rural environment. All, however, combine modern technology with exotic local materials—Balinese sandstone, volcanic rock, recycled ulin wood—for breezy indoor-outdoor living. With over 300 stunning photographs by Danish photographer Jacob Termansen and an insightful text by British author Kim Inglis, this book is a fitting testament to the originality and talent of Bali's design world.

Book excerpt: Blending modern, chic designs with traditional sensibilities, the architecture and decor of Bali is the gold standard for tropical living. A thatched Balinese bale', overlooking a panorama of rice fields and open to the evening breeze, or a courtyard that combines temple carving with relaxing, recreational lounging space are enduring features of a distinctive "Bali-style". Shimmering pavilions, open verandahs, living rooms that invite the outside landscaping in—all are part of the Balinese tropical living experience. This book focuses on these timeless features and shows the new and exciting ways in which they are being interpreted. All the contemporary villas, resort bungalows, shops, restaurants and other buildings in the book, most never photographed before are new additions to the Bali scene. Each is unique, and, most importantly, characterized by a distinctly modern feel. Cleaner lines, more imaginative use of space, sharp angles, and the use of stone, concrete and ceramic roof tiles, are increasingly visible along with the coconut wood, teak and thatching. Stunning color photographs depict the residences set within their natural landscapes; architectural details; and a stunning array of individual interiors. Meticulous text compiled by an expert in tropical design, relates the various stages of the development of this new, international style, and complements the fascinating array of interiors featured.

  • Pages : 192 pages

Download or read book Bali Houses written by Gianni Francione and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2012-05-15 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Balinese design book, containing over 300 beautiful photos and extensive commentary will add a distinctive tropical flair to your interior decorating and architecture. The phenomenon loosely termed "Bali style" has been the subject matter for countless books on art, architecture, and interior design. In this book, author and architect Gianni Francione showcases the new generation of Bali-style homes, interiors, and artifacts that utilize what he terms a new internationalism. Even though the timeless, distinctive Balinese bale, open to a panorama of rice fields and the evening breeze, is still there, it may now be made in marble or stone. Similarly, present-day villas, resort bungalows, shops, restaurants, and other buildings are just as likely to use modernist techniques and materials as they are to utilize alang-alang and coconut wood. Bali Houses presents this new departure in architecture, interior design, glassware, table settings, textiles, furniture, and furnishings in many never-before-photographed locations. It is a fitting sequel to Bali Modern.

Book Kinship in Bali

Download or read book Kinship in Bali written by Hildred Geertz and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1978-08-15 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work constitutes the first book-length examination of Balinese kinship in English and an important theoretical analysis of the central ethnographic concept of "kinship system." Hildred and Clifford Geertz's findings challenge the prevailing anthropological notion of a kinship system as an autonomous set of institutionalized social relationships. Their research in Bali suggests that kinship cannot be studied in isolation but must be perceived as a symbolic subsystem governed by ideas and beliefs unique to each culture.

Download or read book Voices in Bali written by Edward Herbst and published by Wesleyan University Press. This book was released on 2012-01-15 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A scholar and trained performer of Balinese vocal music and dance, ethnomusicologist Edward Herbst brings unique talents to bear in this provocative book. The lessons of his Balinese masters enable him to offer fresh insight to this culture's aesthetics and cultural elements. Appropriating John Cage's effective style of "mixing theory, anecdote, context, philosophy, and humor," Herbst crafts an accessible body of work, compelling in substance and form. By merging the "Balinese concept of place-time-context with Cage's concepts of structure, method, and form, [Herbst] returns to the critical issue of what scholars and intercultural artists are doing, and 'what' is their 'object' under study." Undergraduates and scholars in fields as varied as theater studies and anthropology will find this book and companion CD (in print editions) an important resource not only for its knowledgeable treatment of Balinese culture, but as an example of a more personal and engaging style of scholarly discourse. The ebook edition includes embedded audio.

Book Bali s Silent Crisis

Download or read book Bali s Silent Crisis written by Jeff Lewis and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2009-04-16 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bali and Balinese culture have become central to western imaginings of 'the east.' Along with its natural beauty and tropical sensuality, Bali's rich and complex culture has proved intensely alluring for western artists, scholars, and travelers. However, as this aesthetic imagining and desire for beauty have evolved into a mass tourism industry, the island people and their culture have experienced radical and rapid transformation. While many in the international community were stunned by the horror of the militant bombings in 2002 and 2005, these attacks were merely the apex of a profound and ongoing crisis which resonates through the period of Bali's modernization and engagement with the global economy of pleasure. Bali's Silent Crisis examines and elucidates the complex cultural and political environment of contemporary Bali. The book explains the conditions of crisis in Bali in terms of a powerful collision of cultural elements and trends, focusing specifically on the double matrix of 'desire' and 'violence' that has characterized Bali's recent past. Moving beyond a simple opposition between 'tradition' and 'the modern', this book reveals a society that is struggling to reconcile its own profound aesthetic and sense of historical identity with the intense agonisms that are generated through rapid social and cultural change. Through its thematic approach, Bali's Silent Crisis presents an image of community trauma, creative resilience and pluralization. The book records the challenges and horrors associated with transition, as well as the formidable beauty that remains intrinsic to the island's sense of cultural destiny.

Book excerpt: "...a succinct and thoughtful description and analysis of the development and haracter of Bali's 'touristic culture'...this is an excellent book for a student readerhip. It renders in straightforward language some quite difficult concepts." - Anthropos "This well-written, readable, and concise book forms an excellent introduction to the relationship between culture and tourism." - Focaal "...there is much to enjoy in this book; the writing is uncomplicated, lively and engaging: the conclusions are both daring and thought-provoking. Above all, thee is the author's readiness to engage with cross-cultural comparison in a theoretically driven and explicit way." - Social Anthropology Based on field research carried out over two decades, the author surveys the development of the anthropology of tourism and its significance, using case studies drawn from Indonesia, New Guinea and Japan. He argues that tourism, once seen as rather peripheral by anthropologists, has to be treated as a phenomenon of major importance, both because the size of the flows of people and capital involved, and because it is one of the major sites in which the meeting and hybridization of culture takes place. Tourism, he suggests, leads not to the destruction of local cultures, as many critics have implied, but rather to the emergence of new cultural forms. The central part of the book presents a detailed case-study of the island of Bali in Indonesia. It traces the development of tourism there during the colonial period, and the ways in which "Balinese traditional culture" was developed first by western artists and scholars in the colonial period, and more recently by Balinese government officials in the guise of "cultural tourism." The general theme of the "presentation of tradition" is also discussed in relation to Toraja funerals in the Indonesian province of Sulawesi, western visitors to the Sepik River in Papua-New-Guinea, and the small city of Tono in northern Japan which has become a center for the study of folk-lore.

Book Security Democracy and Society in Bali

Download or read book Security Democracy and Society in Bali written by Andrew Vandenberg and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on how diverse developments are reflected in the rise of the security groups in Bali, Indonesia. Bali’s security groups pose many interesting questions. Why did they put up so many huge posters around the streets of southern Bali promoting themselves? Are their claims to represent the community plausible or are they “gangs”? How are they shaped by Indonesia’s violent past? How does Hinduism affect their gender politics? Do they promote illiberal populism or ethnic and religious tolerance? Does their central role in money politics prevent local democratization? Rather than write bottom-up history or bring the state back in, this collection as a whole draws on the ideas that circulate among leaders. These circulating ideas construct contemporary politics around both reinterpretations of old practices and responses to problems around tourism, gender, populism, religion, and democracy.
