Book Ornament of the Great Vehicle Sutras

Download or read book Ornament of the Great Vehicle Sutras written by Maitreya and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 2014-11-11 with total page 1042 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Buddhist masterpiece Ornament of the Great Vehicle Sūtras, often referred to by its Sanskrit title, Mahāyānasūtrālaṃkāra, is part of a collection known as the Five Maitreya Teachings, a set of philosophical works that have become classics of the Indian Buddhist tradition. Maitreya, the Buddha’s regent, is held to have entrusted these profound and vast instructions to the master Asaṅga in the heavenly realm of Tuṣita. The Ornament provides a comprehensive description of the bodhisattva’s view, meditation, and enlightened activities. Bodhisattvas are beings who, out of vast love for all sentient beings, have dedicated themselves to the task of becoming fully awakened buddhas, capable of helping all beings in innumerable and vast ways to become enlightened themselves. To fully awaken requires practicing great generosity, patience, energy, discipline, concentration, and wisdom, and Maitreya’s text explains what these enlightened qualities are and how to develop them. This volume includes commentaries by Khenpo Shenga and Ju Mipham, whose discussions illuminate the subtleties of the root text and provide valuable insight into how to practice the way of the bodhisattva. Drawing on the Indian masters Vasubandhu and, in particular, Sthiramati, Mipham explains the Ornament with eloquence and brilliant clarity. This commentary is among his most treasured works.

Book Contemplating Shostakovich Life Music and Film

Download or read book Contemplating Shostakovich Life Music and Film written by Andrew Kirkman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemplating Shostakovich marks an important new stage in the understanding of Shostakovich and his working environment. Each chapter covers aspects of the composer's output in the context of his life and cultural milieu. The contributions uncover 'outside' stimuli behind Shostakovich's works, allowing the reader to perceive the motivations behind his artistic choices; at the same time, the nature of those choices offers insights into the workings of the larger world - cultural, social, political - that he inhabited. Thus his often ostensibly quirky choices are revealed as responses - by turns sentimental, moving, sardonic and angry - to the particular conditions, with all their absurdities and contradictions, that he had to negotiate. Here we see the composer emerging from the role of tortured loner of older narratives into that of the gregarious and engaged member of his society that, for better and worse, characterized the everyday reality of his life. This invaluable collection offers remarkable new insight, in both depth and range, into the nature of Shostakovich's working circumstances and of his response to them. The collection contains the seeds for a wide range of new directions in the study of Shostakovich's works and the larger contexts of their creation and reception.

Book excerpt: Schizophrenia: A Contemporary Introduction provides a vital overview of psychoanalytic work with patients dealing with schizophrenia, highlighting the many benefits of this approach and introducing key methods for mental health practitioners. This concise introductory volume starts by offering a brief historical introduction to how psychoanalysts, from Freud onwards, have approached schizophrenia and the methods they have used to alleviate the distress it causes its sufferers. Gillian Steggles illustrates how the developing relationship between patient and analyst can positively impact the patient’s mental functioning, leading to an improvement in their overall health and the ability to regain independence and self-reliance. She introduces theoretical psychoanalytic approaches, such as the Psychodynamic Pentapointed Cognitive Construct (PPCC) model, as a means of offering guidance to analysts dealing with schizophrenic analysands. This book will be of interest to practicing and trainee analysts, as well as those interested in the history of schizophrenia and its continued impact.

Download or read book Eco Thoughts written by Anna Lisa Tota and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-08 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if the pollution of the world did not only concern the environment in which we live, but also the flow of our thoughts in every moment of everyday life? What if those thoughts, invasive like locusts, could transform and become "eco-thoughts" that make us and others feel good? Ecology concerns us from the inside, passes through us, and literally shapes us: "what is inside is outside". This book offers "eco-words" and "eco-thoughts" as it sheds light on the traps that our minds construct for ourselves, that we so often fall into whether we mean to or not. It examines the erroneous paths that we sometimes meander down while we are thinking in our everyday lives in order to help us to identify and avoid them. The thoughts we formulate are not really ours, as if our mind prefers to flow in what has already been thought, lived, and felt. The author offers her reflections and insights to those who wish to direct their minds towards streams of thought that really do belong to us, that make us feel good. In order to do this, we must learn how to disable the “traps” and free ourselves of what is “contaminating” before they take hold and harm us. An original and thought-provoking examination of how are own internal lives can become toxic, and how to prevent this, that will be of particular value to students and scholars of sociology, philosophy, communication studies, memory studies, and social psychology.
