Book excerpt: Excerpt from Veneer-Log Production and Consumption, North Central Region, 1966 Seventy-nine veneer mills were operating during 1966 in the North Central Region (fig. Thirty-five were container veneer mills and the others manufactured face, core, cross band, or specialty veneers. Veneer mills are especially abundant in northeastern Wiscon sin and southern Indiana. These areas contain several large mills producing high-quality face and specialty veneers. As a result, both of these States are large importers of high quality veneer logs. Lake States loggers harvested million board feet of veneer logs in 1966 (table I), nearly one million board feet less than the previous year (after deducting 1966 overseas exports). Harvesting was up million board feet from 1965 in Michigan but was more than offset by a lower cut in Minnesota and Wis consin. Most of the logs, 45 million board feet, went to mills cutting commercial, utility, and face veneers for doors, furniture, wall panels, specialty plywoods, and similar items. The remainder was used in manufacturing veneer for boxes, baskets, and other contain ers. An additional cords of small logs were cut for heading stock for container mills. Hard maple increased its lead as the domi nant species cut in the Lake States. Slightly more than 13 million board feet were cut in 1966 an increase of million over the previous year. Hard maple shipments from the Lake States, primarily to Indiana veneer mills, were up 46 percent from 1965. Almost 58 percent of this volume was from hardwood trees. Sawlogs were the major timber product, accounting for slightly more than 55 percent of the total harvest in Maryland. Pulpwood production ranked second in volume, accounting for 33 percent of the total. Other timber products that made up a minor portion of the harvest were veneer and cooperage logs, piling, poles, posts, mine timbers, and handle stock. Overall, the timber harvest in Maryland has decreased 25 percent since the last industry sur vey was made in 1963, and 19 percent since 1952. Even though the production of most products declined between 1963 and 1975, two products showed substantial increases: the harvest of veneer logs and pulpwood increased 42 and 27 percent respectively. These production gains were due entirely to an increase in the use of softwoods for pulpwood and veneer. The softwood harvest for pulpwood increased from million cubic feet in 1963 to million cubic feet in 1975 and the softwood veneer-log harvest increased from cubic feet to million cubic feet. The veneer log production was stimulated by the establishment of a softwood plywood plant on Maryland's eastern shore in 1967. This plywood plant is the only one using. Softwoods in the Northeast. In 1975, most of the industrial timber harvest came from eastern Maryland (fig. The 17 million cubic-foot harvest from the South Eastern Shore Unit represented 39 percent of the state total. Although the North Central Unit ranked second in volume harvested - 11 million cubic feet - a greater volume of sawlogs was harvested from this unit than from any of the other units. The Western Unit had the largest pulpwood harvest from hardwoods; the million cubic feet of pulpwood production was 89 percent of the hardwood total for Maryland. Charles County, in the Southern Unit, was the state's largest hardwood sawlog producer in 1975 million board feet); Worcester County produced the largest volume of softwood saw logs million board feet). In the course of her in-depth analysis of this scroll dating from the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century, Gülru Necipoğlu throws new light on the conceptualization, recording, and transmission of architectural design in the Islamic world between the tenth and sixteenth centuries. Her text has particularly far-reaching implications for recent discussions on vision, subjectivity, and the semiotics of abstract representation. She also compares the Islamic understanding of geometry with that found in medieval Western art, making this book particularly valuable for all historians and critics of architecture.
