Book excerpt: Muchas veces se ha afirmado, en tono de denuncia, que la nuestra es una sociedad signada por el consumo. Con este rótulo, surgido en la segunda posguerra y llevado a la notoriedad por autores como Marcuse, Galbraith, Packard y Baudrillard, se ha querido destacar el hecho de que la sociedad en que vivimos se connota como una particular variante del capitalismo, caracterizada precisamente por la primacía del consumo. Pero, en realidad, tras su aparente simplicidad, la expresión «sociedad de consumo» es profundamente ambigua. La autora ilustra la génesis histórica de la cultura de consumo contemporánea, las principales teorías que han tratado de explicar los comportamientos de los consumidores, las relaciones de poder que implican las prácticas de uso y consumo de bienes. Al esclarecimiento teórico se agregan numerosos ejemplos referidos a las modas juveniles y al consumo caracterizado en función del género, a la cocina étnica, a la televisión y a las opciones para el tiempo libre, a los gastos en sanidad y a los boicots contra las multinacionales. De estas exploraciones surgen los mecanismos mediante los cuales la cultura de consumo producto de vastos fenómenos, como la globalización de los intercambios, el desarrollo de importantes cadenas de distribución, la difusión de mensajes comerciales cada vez más sofisticados es luego «negociada» en la cotidianidad de los sujetos comprometidos en construir una identidad propia y un estilo de vida entre la necesidad, la alienación y el placer.

La legitimidad de los fans como objeto de estudio es relativamente reciente. Sin embargo, en los últimos años, los fans se han consolidado como un tema digno de observación y reflexión. A ello ha contribuido sin duda el establecimiento de una buena base de estudios sobre la comunicación en internet. Las tecnologías digitales, y especialmente la infraestructura de internet, han ocupado un papel central en sus relaciones. Internet amplía y configura las relaciones y la producción de los fans, con lo que se convierte en un agente capital de un cambio cultural. Es imposible dar cuenta de la relevancia social y cultural sin pasar en algún momento por la observación de las comunidades formadas por fans. A pesar de que la producción académica sobre fans es ya extensa en lengua inglesa, no es fácil encontrar textos sobre el tema en español. Este libro pretende ser una aportación al estudio de los fans dirigida a todo tipo de personas interesadas en el fenómeno.

Focusing on the connections between creativity and social change in the Americas, this collection encourages scholars to become cultural agents by reflecting on exemplary cases and thereby making them available as inspirations for more constructive theory and more innovative practice. Creativity supports democracy because artistic, administrative, and interpretive experiments need margins of freedom that defy monolithic or authoritarian regimes. The ingenious ways in which people pry open dead-ends of even apparently intractable structures suggest that cultural studies as we know it has too often gotten stuck in critique. Intellectual responsibility can get beyond denunciation by acknowledging and nurturing the resourcefulness of common and uncommon agents. Based in North and South America, scholars from fields including anthropology, performance studies, history, literature, and communications studies explore specific variations of cultural agency across Latin America. Contributors reflect, for example, on the paradoxical programming and reception of a state-controlled Cuban radio station that connects listeners at home and abroad; on the intricacies of indigenous protests in Brazil; and the formulation of cultural policies in cosmopolitan Mexico City. One contributor notes that trauma theory targets individual victims when it should address collective memory as it is worked through in performance and ritual; another examines how Mapuche leaders in Argentina perceived the pitfalls of ethnic essentialism and developed new ways to intervene in local government. Book excerpt: Relying on the concept of a shared history, this book argues that we can speak of a shared heritage that is common in terms of the basic grammar of heritage and articulated histories, but divided alongside the basic difference between colonizers and colonized. This problematic is also evident in contemporary uses of the past. The last decades were crucial to the emergence of new debates: subcultures, new identities, hidden voices and multicultural discourse as a kind of new hegemonic platform also involving concepts of heritage and/or memory. Thereby we can observe a proliferation of heritage agents, especially beyond the scope of the nation state. This volume gets beyond a container vision of heritage that seeks to construct a diachronical continuity in a given territory. Instead, authors point out the relational character of heritage focusing on transnational and translocal flows and interchanges of ideas, concepts, and practices, as well as on the creation of contact zones where the meaning of heritage is negotiated and contested. Exploring the relevance of the politics of heritage and the uses of memory in the consolidation of these nation states, as well as in the current disputes over resistances, hidden memories, undermined pasts, or the politics of nostalgia, this book seeks to seize the local/global dimensions around heritage.

As a result, Chile's middle class expanded dramatically, echoing trends seen across the Global South as neoliberalism took firm hold in the 1990s and the early 2000s. Identity Investments examines the politics and consumption practices of this vast and varied fraction of the Chilean population, seeking to better understand their value systems and the histories that informed them. Using participant observation, interviews, and photographs, Joel Stillerman develops a unique typology of the middle class, made up of activists, moderate Catholics, pragmatists, and youngsters. This typology allows him to unearth the cultural, political, and religious roots of middle-class market practices in contrast with other studies focused on social mobility and exclusionary practices. The resultant contrast in backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives of these four groups animates this book and extends an emerging body of scholarship focused on the connections between middle-class market choices and politics in the Global South, with important implications for Chile's recent explosive political changes.
