Book excerpt: "Deliver us from (the) evil (one)" is the heart's cry from the Lord's Prayer. Evil wears many faces in our modern world. This book connects the Lord's Prayer to troubles of our times, be it attacks from Satan, the wars around the world, the scourge of racism, or the mass shootings of our time. The subtitle of the book identifies the scope. This book blends both deliverance from demonic bondage and witness to the powers in relation to political policies and government. While the book aims to be a biblical theology on these topics, it seeks also to address the praxis: how these evils are confronted through healing-deliverance ministries and what people of God say and do in witness to the powers. The two streams of response to evil are really one as a faithful response to the saving work of the Lord God Almighty through Jesus Christ's victory over Satan, sin, evil, and death. "Love your enemy" confronts evil with power to transform

Specifically, this study examines the topic of sexual abuse by Catholic priests. It also looks at the bishops and their responsibility and lack of it. They were concerned with covering the problem up and protecting themselves, not the child victims. The study also looks at ways of preventing this from happening again.

Download or read book Deliver Us From Evil written by William Shawcross and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2002-01-10 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reporting from war zones around the globe, acclaimed journalist William Shawcross gives us an unforgettable portrait of a dangerous world and of the brave men and women, ordinary and extraordinary, who risk their lives to make and keep the peace. The end of the Cold War was followed by a decade of regional and ethnic wars, massacres and forced exiles, and by constant calls for America to lead the international community as chief peace-keeper. The efforts of that community -- identified with the United Nations but often dominated by the world's wealthy nations -- have had mixed results. In Africa, the West is accused of indifference or too little, too late. In Cambodia, the UN presides over free elections, but the results are overridden. In Iraq, Saddam Hussein continues to defy the UN, and in Bosnia and Kosovo, the West acts hesitantly after terrible slaughter and ethnic cleansing. Shawcross, a veteran of many war zones, has had broad access to global policymakers, including UN secretary general Kofi Annan, high American diplomats, peacekeepers and humanitarian-aid professionals. He has traveled with them to some of the world's most horrifying killing fields. Deliver Us from Evil is his stark, on-the-ground report on the many crises faced by the international community and its servants as they struggle to respond around the world. He brings home the price many have paid attempting to restore peace and help alleviate terrible suffering. He illuminates the risks we face in a complex and dangerous world. Some critics have concluded that some interventions may prolong conflict and create further casualties. The lesson we learn from ruthless and vengeful warlords the world over is that goodwill without strength can make things worse. Shawcross argues that recent interventions -- in Kosovo and East Timor, for example -- provide reason for concern as well as hope. Still, the unmistakable message of the past decade is that we cannot intervene everywhere, that not every wrong can be righted merely because the international community desires it, or because we wish to remove images of suffering from our television screens. Nor can we necessarily rebuild failed states in our image. When we intervene, we must be certain of our objectives, sure of popular support and willing to expend the necessary resources -- even lives. If our interventions are to be effective and humane, they must last for more than the fifteen minutes of attention that the media accord to each succeeding crisis. That is a tall order. As Shawcross concludes, "In a more religious time it was only God whom we asked to deliver us from evil. Now we call upon our own man-made institutions for such deliverance. That is sometimes to ask for miracles."

The ministries of healing and deliverance have always been intended to function as primary signs of Christ’s advancing Kingdom of Light. How might we re-establish healing and deliverance as critical facets to disciple-making? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deliver Us from Evil: A Prayer for Our Times is a book written for the volatile evil times in which we live and what primarily the Christian church needs to know and do about it. Its purpose is to move beyond the performance stage to view the backstage, to look behind at the often unrecognized spiritual and evil infrastructure that constantly influence and corrupt what we see on the world’s popular stage. It explains why truth on every level is under attacked. It exposed the satanic strategy of lies, camouflage, hidden agendas, hidden spiritual wars that contribute to evil in the world. It reveals the many ways in which the Christian church is being dragged into wars God did not call us to fight, while neglecting the one he called us to fight. It reveals why the evangelical church is so deadly silent about God’s good news to our world while evil news is always viral in our times. Most of all, this book lays out how we must fight our battles. It reveals the detailed biblical battle plan God gave his followers to follow, to fight, and to win. It shows the path back to the real spiritual war against evil God called his people to engage. It delivers the often hidden foundational reason and purpose for Christ’s prophetic prayer to his followers. This book shows Jesus’s prayer was meant particularly for our times and dispensation just before he returns to finally and ultimately “deliver us from evil.” It is one of the most important Christian books for survival for the Christian church’s effective witness in our times.

Book excerpt: Jesus cast out demons during His time on earth, and His followers continue to do the same. Kent Philpott, during the years of the Jesus People Movement, from 1967 to 1975, engaged in the casting out of demons, however reluctantly. Being the author of several books on the subject, he was asked by Christian counselors to prepare a short and concise instruction manual on how the work called deliverance may be approached today. In this second and expanded edition, he presents the biblical theology for casting out demons, lists ways in which people become demonized, and looks at objections and questions many have on the subject. This second edition also discusses the possible connection between hearing voices and demonization. Philpott postulates the potential that the voices many hear are in fact evil spirits, based on years of experience and research. It is not uncommon for voices to disappear once demons are cast out, Philpott discovered over nearly four decades of work with those troubled by spirits. With some trepidation, he approaches this important discussion, considering the large numbers of people who do hear voices and are often quite hesitant to speak of it. Pastor Philpott recommends that those who receive deliverance have follow-up care, preferring a small group setting of those who have had similar experiences - survivors - as an extension of deliverance ministry. Here is a simple and clear explanation of how to go about the increasingly important deliverance ministry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Deliver Us From Evil: A Protest Against the Change in the Last Petition of the Lord's Prayer, Adopted in the Revised Version; A Letter to the Bishop of London Early in this present year I was informed, to my extreme surprise and grief, that the Revisers of the Authorized Version had resolved to introduce an alteration of vital importance in the Lord's Prayer. I find that they have issued the work with that alteration, substituting the evil one for evil in the closing petition. I observe, moreover, that the extreme gravity of the change is recognised by the Bishop of Gloucester and Bristol, who defends it in his speech addressed to the Upper House of Convocation on the 17th of this month. Certainly no change likely to be adopted by men so learned, so high in the estimation of their fellow-christians, could be proposed which would produce a more general and lively feeling of astonish ment and pain - a change affecting the prayer which bears the emphatic designation of the Lord's Prayer, in which every Christian sums up his deepest and most earnest petitions, in which the Church recognises the model and law of her devotions. Willing and ready as we are to accept the decisions of the Revisers on most points of pure scholarship. And theological learning, on such a point as this all must be anxious to know on what grounds the correctness and the necessity of this alteration can be maintained. For my own part, after repeated and earnest inquiry, and, I must add, after consultation with scholars of the highest eminence, I have arrived at the deliberate conviction that its correctness is, to say the least, exceedingly doubtful, and its adeption by the Revisers indefensible on the only admissible ground, that of necessity. I will endeavour, with all possible brevity, to state the grounds on which this conviction rests. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
