C’est à ce dialogue entre les constructions identitaires et les pratiques sociales qu’a été consacré ce colloque, tenu à l’Université d’Ottawa et dédié à la mémoire de Pierre Savard. Les textes réunis en ces pages sont le fruit de cette rencontre pluridisciplinaire, qui, en plus de rendre hommage à un collègue trop tôt disparu, a présenté une vingtaine de communications tournant autour d’un thème très présent dans les débats actuels en sciences humaines, celui des constructions identitaires. Le colloque a voulu notamment mettre en évidence comment les acteurs, collectifs aussi bien qu’individuels, font et refont leur identité, et s’en servent, le plus souvent inconsciemment, pour orienter leurs activités; et comment, en retour, ils laissent aux pratiques le soin de donner une coloration particulière à leur identité. Puissent tous les articles issus de cette rencontre perpétuer le souvenir de Pierre Savard, l’homme et le scientifique, le professeur et l’éternel voyageur, celui qui, partout où il se trouvait, éveillait sympathie et enthousiasme.

Focusing on the particular thought of ultra-conservative Ukrainian Canadian Walter J. Bossy during his time in Montreal (1931–1970s), this book demonstrates that the idea that Canada was composed of three equally important groups emerged from a context defined by reactionary ideas on ethnic diversity and integration. Two broad questions shape this research: first, what the meaning originally attached to the idea of a ‘third force’ was, and what the intentions behind the conceptualization of a trichotomic Canada were; and second, whether Bossy’s understanding of the ‘third force’ precedes, or is related in any way to, postwar debates on liberal multiculturalism at the core of which was the existence of a ‘third force’. This book will be of interest to students and researchers of multiculturalism, radical-right ideology and the far right, and Canadian history and politics.

This volume–while further illustrating processes and instantiations of indigenisation at this level–incorporates investigations of sociolinguistic and pragmatic phenomena in daily social interaction–e.g. politeness, respect, compliment response, naming and address forms, and gender–through innovative analytic frameworks that view indigenisation from emic perspectives. Focusing on postcolonial Cameroon and using natural and questionnaire data, the book assesses the salience of linguistic and sociocultural hybridisation triggered by colonialism and, recently, globalisation in interaction in and across languages and cultures. The authors illustrate how the multilingual nature of the society and individuals’ multilingual repertoires shape patterns in the indigenisation and evolution of the ex-colonial languages, English and French, and Pidgin English.

Il présente par ailleurs des sens techniques différents selon les disciplines, et la recherche de ce concept dans les dictionnaires des Sciences du langage s'avère peu satisfaisante. Le présent ouvrage, issu du colloque « Construction d'identité et processus d'identification » (organisé à l'Université François Rabelais, Tours en novembre 2007) reprend une partie revue et corrigée après relecture anonyme des communications orales de ce colloque. Il tient sa singularité de ce que l'identité y est considérée non comme catégorie de langue ou de discours ou encore comme indice d'une appartenance socioculturelle mais plutôt comme un construit et l'identification comme une construction à part entière.
