Book Work Health and Wellbeing in the Construction Industry

Download or read book Work Health and Wellbeing in the Construction Industry written by Helen Lingard and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers a wide range of topics relating to the health and wellbeing of the construction workforce. Based on more than two decades of work examining various aspects of workers’ health and wellbeing, the book addresses a key topic in construction management: how the design of work environments, construction processes and organisation of work impact upon construction workers’ physical and psychological health. Occupational health is a significant problem for the construction industry. However, the subject of health does not receive as much attention in occupational health and safety research or practice as the subject of safety. Traditional management approaches (focused on the prevention of accidents and injuries) are arguably ill-suited to addressing issues of workers’ health and wellbeing. This book seeks to explain how workers' health and wellbeing are impacted by working in the construction sector, and suggest ways in which organisations (and decision makers within them) can positively shape workplaces and practices in ways that better support construction workers to maintain healthy and productive working lives. Including chapter summaries and discussion questions to encourage student readers to reflect on and formulate their own viewpoints about the issues raised in each chapter, the book has the potential to be used as a textbook in undergraduate or postgraduate occupational health and safety, or construction management courses dealing with occupational health and safety. It could also be used as supplementary recommended reading in undergraduate or postgraduate programmes in architecture, engineering or management.

Book Routledge Handbook on Labour in Construction and Human Settlements

Download or read book Routledge Handbook on Labour in Construction and Human Settlements written by Edmundo Werna and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-12 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Routledge Handbook on Labour in Construction and Human Settlements presents a detailed and comprehensive examination of the relationship between labour and the built environment, and synergises these critical focus areas in innovative ways. This unrivalled edited collection of chapters analyses problems and presents possible solutions related to the employment and conditions of workers in the construction industry. It provides comprehensive coverage of the relationship between the global workforce and the built environment and is divided into four topical areas: how labour and the built environment relate to development; employment generation in the built environment; quality of employment in the built environment; and the impact of the built environment on labour in other sectors. Underpinning the entire book is the premise that the way the built environment is produced, and its main products – buildings, cities and towns – have an impact on large numbers of workers. At the same time, the quality of the built environment requires construction workers who are well trained and with good working conditions. While cities and towns are the engines of economic growth, they will not be able to fulfil their economic potential if poverty in the workforce is not addressed. Those who are unemployed, underemployed or work in unfavourable conditions cannot fully contribute to production, and at the same time are limited in their ability to purchase goods and services – therefore limiting economic growth and restricting improvements in their living standards. In addition, investments in infrastructure, housing and inner-city redevelopment cannot be sustainable if labour issues – i.e., poverty – are not addressed. This book aims at analysing this complex set of issues comprehensively and will be essential reading to a wide range of researchers across the interdisciplinary intersections of construction, business and management, economic development, urban studies, sociology, political science and project management.

Book Handbook of Construction Safety Health and Well being in the Industry 4 0 Era

Download or read book Handbook of Construction Safety Health and Well being in the Industry 4 0 Era written by Patrick Manu and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-12 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Handbook seeks to examine and advance current understanding of the confluence of construction health, safety and well-being and the broad range of Industry 4.0 technologies in use in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry. Globally, the construction sector accounts for more than 100,000 occupational fatalities annually. In many countries, reports of work-related accidents, injuries and illnesses are commonplace, and there is an urgent need to improve the occupational safety and health (OSH) outlook of the construction sector. The fourth industrial revolution presents opportunities to leverage modern technologies (e.g., big data, artificial intelligence, automation, sensors, AR, VR and robotics) to improve the poor OSH performance of the construction industry. However, embracing such technologies could also induce unintended adverse consequences for the safety, health and well-being of construction workers. Therefore, the realisation of the opportunities as well as the mitigation of potentially adverse consequences requires research-informed holistic insights around the union of Industry 4.0 and construction occupational safety and health management. This cutting-edge volume addresses a significant gap in literature by bringing together experienced academics and researchers to highlight the drivers, opportunities and drawbacks of the merging of Industry 4.0 with construction health, safety and well-being. After a detailed introductory section which highlights key issues and challenges, section one covers the application of a broad range of digital technologies; then section two discusses the application of industrial production and cyber physical systems in the context of construction safety and health management. Readers from a broad range of AEC backgrounds as well as safety professionals and technologists will come to understand how the technologies are applied and the resulting OSH benefits as well as potential drawbacks.

Book Occupational Diseases in the Construction Industry

Download or read book Occupational Diseases in the Construction Industry written by Imriyas Kamardeen and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-23 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite occupational diseases in construction contributing to a significant proportion of fatalities, and permanent and temporary incapacities, they have not gained as much attention as occupational injuries from practitioners and researchers. The research in this book aims to discover occupational diseases that cause fatalities and permanent and temporary incapacities in the construction industry, along with their epidemiological causal mechanisms. Through chapters examining cancers, circulatory system diseases, respiratory system diseases, nervous system and sense organ diseases, and musculoskeletal diseases, the authors provide new knowledge and insights to help proactively prevent and control these diseases. The research underpinning the development of the book applies empirical analyses of real-world occupational disease data for the construction industry alongside a detailed review and meta-analysis of literature pertinent to risk factors and methods and strategies to prevent and/or control occupational diseases in construction. Knowing the riskiest diseases and occupations for construction workers, along with organisational and personal risk factors, is critical to optimising risk management efforts. This book should be of interest to students, researchers, and practitioners in construction management, occupational health and safety, and risk management.

Download or read book The Fault in Our SARS written by Rob Wallace and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2023-02-02 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proposes the pragmatic changes we must make to survive COVID and the worst of the new diseases on the horizon The Trump administration’s neglect and incompetence helped put half-a-million Americans in the ground, dead from COVID-19. Joe Biden was elected president in part on the promise of setting us on a science-driven course correction, but, a little more than a year later, another half-a-million Americans were killed by the virus. What happened? In The Fault in Our SARS, evolutionary epidemiologist Rob Wallace catalogs the Biden administration's failures in controlling the outbreak. He also shows that, beyond matters of specific political persona or party, it was a decades-long structural decline associated with putting profits ahead of people that gutted U.S. public health. COVID-19 isn’t just an American tragedy. Each in its own way, countries around the world following the "profit-first" model failed their people. Global vaccination campaigns were bottled up by efforts to protect pharmaceutical companies' intellectual property rights. Economies were treated as somehow more real than the people and ecologies upon which they depend. Frustrated populations pushed back against lockdowns, abuses of governmental trust, and, fair or not, the very concept of public health. A social rot meanwhile wended its way into the heart of the sciences that, tasked with controlling disease, serve the systems that helped bring about COVID-19 in the first place. In The Fault in Our SARS, Wallace and an array of invited contributors aim to strip down the capitalist social psychology that in effect protected the SARS virus. The team proposes instead new approaches in health and ecology that appeal both to humanity's highest ideals and the pragmatic changes we must make to survive COVID and the worst of the new diseases on the horizon.

Book Migrant Construction Workers in Times of Crisis

Download or read book Migrant Construction Workers in Times of Crisis written by Iraklis Dimitriadis and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-01 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how migrant construction workers in Southern Europe faced unemployment and precarious work conditions during and after the Great Recession. By drawing on rich qualitative data, it investigates the experiences of Albanian men within and beyond the workplace, and sheds light on the capacity of migrant builders to deal with economic hardships and the role of their families and masculine identities in shaping their coping practices. This book suggests a new framework for the study of coping practices among migrant (construction) workers, and adds to the study of integration processes in Southern European countries by comparing the narratives of settled migrants in Italy and Greece. This book also looks at the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on migrant builders’ lives in Southern Europe. By adopting an interdisciplinary approach, this book is of interest both to students and researchers in the field of migration studies and those working in the fields of sociology, geography, anthropology, political science and economics.
