Book Construction Productivity in the Multilayer Subcontracting System

Download or read book Construction Productivity in the Multilayer Subcontracting System written by Low Sui Pheng and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-14 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on current subcontracting practices in the construction industry and their effects on Singapore’s construction productivity. It offers readers a better understanding of how the fragmentation of large and small firms in Singapore impacts construction productivity when operating under the commonly adopted multilayer subcontracting system (MLSS), which extends globally to the construction industries in other countries that have adopted the MLSS. The book also assesses the effectiveness of subcontracting practices in helping local contractors improve their construction productivity (and thereby improve the industry’s overall productivity). In closing, it provides recommendations on how the problems associated with the MLSS can best be addressed, and how its benefits can be capitalized on through organizational learning.

Book Self Organization and Mobility Deprivation of Poor Workers in Hong Kong and Singapore

Download or read book Self Organization and Mobility Deprivation of Poor Workers in Hong Kong and Singapore written by Joseph Cho-Yam Lau and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-10-16 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the influence of socio-economic and land-use policies on the commuting problems and quality of life of the poor in Singapore and Hong Kong. It considers the influence of self-organisation: how the mobility of an individual is constituted by structures such as transport systems or socio-economic structural factors, as well as influenced by individual decisions. Where most transport studies focus on the influence of factors such as income inequality, the gender gap, and the built environment, this book fills a gap in paying particular attention to the influence of individual decisions on commuting. Given the prevalence of the former in research, government decision-makers are often constrained by these approaches and fail to understand the commuting problems of the poor. This book argues that the self-organisation approach provides some ideas that are outside the common conceptual framework in conventional transport planning and looks to improve mobility of lower-income commuters. Relevant to social science researchers working in areas such as urban planning and transport, mobility deprivation, and poverty, this book breaks new ground in quality of life studies in the Singapore and Hong Kong contexts.

Book The Relationship between Main Contractors and Subcontractors in the Zambian Construction Industry

Download or read book The Relationship between Main Contractors and Subcontractors in the Zambian Construction Industry written by Tafadzwa Mudzvokorwa and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2017-07-10 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Engineering - Civil Engineering, University of Zambia, course: Master of Engineering Project Management, language: English, abstract: In recent years there have been a substantial number of projects conducted in the Zambian construction industry. Due to the magnitude and complexity of many of these projects, contractors have resorted to subcontracting to share responsibilities and mitigate project risks. The Zambian government has also invigorated the practice of subcontracting in the construction industry as it plays an important role in increasing economy viability and building capacity. Instead of improving project success, subcontracting can act as a catalyst for poor project outcomes. Though there are many reasons that contribute to problems from subcontracting, a poor relationship between main contractors and subcontractors can be seen as a notorious contributor affecting construction works. The study aimed at investigating the relationship between the main contractors and subcontractors in the Zambian construction industry and recommend a framework that can be implemented to better the relationship. The study also examined the effects of a poor interface between main contractors and subcontractors in Zambia. Data collection techniques used included literature review, interviews and questionnaire surveys. The relative importance index was used to determine the ranking of the results of the study. Using the results adduced from the study a main contractor-subcontractor non-contractual partnering model was developed. The study established that the relationship between main contractors and subcontractors in Zambia is poor therefore needing attention. Interface problems were caused by payment issues, poor communication, unexpected price escalations and poor construction work. In order to address interface problems, the study found that there was need for better communication between the parties, timely payments and subcontractors’ access to labour and machinery. However, the study, had some limitations that need consideration when interpreting the results found. The limitations included scarcity of specific literature on subcontracting in the Zambian construction industry, the size of the sample only being limited to Lusaka. Nevertheless, these limitations could be addressed through further studies.

Book Code of Practice for the Selection of Subcontractors

Download or read book Code of Practice for the Selection of Subcontractors written by Construction Industry Board (Great Britain). Working Group 3 and published by Thomas Telford. This book was released on 1997 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This code of practice is one of a set of documents from the CIB aimed at improving the quality, effectiveness and efficiency of the construction industry. It should be used in conjunction with the other documents in the series. 1~ The good practice recommended should be observed in commercial relationships throughout the contractual chain and throughout the duration of a construction project. Subcontractors can be selected by competitive tendering, by negotiation or as a result of partnering or a joint venture arrangement. Competitive tendering is complex and requires everyone involved to follow a common set of procedures; inevitably it occupies the bulk of this code. In competitive tendering for small or simple works all the steps described are required but many may take place I formally, and these are indicated by dotted lines in the diagrams which accompany each section of the code. Negotiation, partnering or joint ventures should all be carried out in the same spirit of good practice although specific procedures will vary. For competitive tendering to be effective in providing good value for money it must be seen to be fair and the processes by which decisions are reached must be as open as possible. This applies to all forms of subcontractor selection.

Book Construction Safety Management Systems

Download or read book Construction Safety Management Systems written by Steve Rowlinson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-04-29 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The construction industry has a distressingly poor safety record, whether measured in absolute terms or alongside other industries. The level of construction safety in a country is influenced by factors such as variations in the labour forces, shifting economies, insurance rates, legal ramifications and the stage of technological development. Yet the problem is a world-wide one, and many of the ways of tackling it can be applied across countries. Effective tools include designing, preplanning, training, management commitment and the development of a safety culture. The introduction and operation of effective safety management systems represents a viable way forwards, but these systems are all too rarely implemented. How can this be done? Should we go back to prescriptive legislation? This book considers these questions by drawing together leading-edge research papers from the proceedings of an international conference conducted by a commission (W099) on Safety and Health on Construction Sites of CIB, the international council of building research organisations.

Book Becoming a Farmer in Contemporary Japan

Download or read book Becoming a Farmer in Contemporary Japan written by Niccolò Lollini and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-10-27 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted in an agricultural cooperative running a training programme for aspiring farmers, this book explores the possibilities of agrarian and land-based modes of livelihood in contemporary Japan. The book is organised around the four key hurdles faced by new agricultural entrants: the acquisition of land and housing, farming know-how, capital, and market outlets. New farmers look with fresh eyes at agricultural issues, and their experiences provide a vantage point over the institutions shaping rural and agricultural life. The book documents the mounting problem of land and house abandonment in regional Japan, the role of agriculture in the revitalisation of rural communities, and the transformation of Japan’s agrifood system. To avoid reinforcing Japan’s exceptionalism, agricultural policy, farming practices, and fresh food distribution are analysed from a comparative perspective, shedding new light on processes of agrarian change in developed market economies. Providing an in-depth insight into pro-rural migration in the face of Japan’s shrinking regions and its declining agricultural sector, this book will be a valuable resource for students and scholars of Japanese society, agrarian policy, and rural sociology.
