Book An Australian Republic

Download or read book An Australian Republic written by Greg Barns and published by Scribe Publications. This book was released on 2006 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Australian republic is so near, yet so far. The prime minister, John Howard, is so vehemently opposed to any change in the status quo that there seems little likelihood of the republic being placed on the political agenda in the near future. As the 1999 referendum showed, the confrontational nature of our democracy is tailor-made for political opportunism and negative campaigns, and will always be a potential obstacle to the republican cause. The desire for a more appropriate constitutional form for contemporary Australia has been placed in the too-hard basket by many of its supporters. Greg Barns and Anna Krawec-Wheaton are more hopeful. They argue that the community is broadly republican in sentiment and that forces within both major political parties are sympathetic. They believe that the situation could change rapidly with a Costello prime ministership presenting a real opportunity to build consensus across party boundaries and between the major players. 'An Australian Republic' examines how the opportunity can be grasped, how the conditions necessary for achieving consensus can be created and how the political will to tackle the complex issues of constitutional change can be generated.

Book In Defence of Australia s Constitutional Monarchy

Download or read book In Defence of Australia s Constitutional Monarchy written by Philip Benwell and published by Edwin Mellen Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Never before, since the Federation of the Australian Colonies in 1901, had the Constitution of Australia come under such intense scrutiny as occurred in the lead-up to the republican Referendum of 1999. Just as there were differences of opinion amongst republicans on what form an Australian republic should take, there were different perceptions amongst monarchists on what formed the modern day structures of Australia's Constitutional monarchy. In this collection of speeches and articles, Philip Benwell has attempted to explain the various interpretations not just of the Constitution itself but also of The Crown of the United Kingdom, under which the Australian Federation has been transformed. It is the only known work of its kind and a valuable contribution to scholarship not only for its in-depth examination of the meaning of The Crown particularly within Australia's Constitution, but also as a research tool for future occasions.
