Book excerpt: The Alloy Data Center, part of the National Standard Reference Data System, has two primary functions. One is to stimulate cooperation and coordination among the existing data centers in the area of the physical properties of well characterized alloys. The final data generated by these centers for publication should be consistent with one another where correlation or possible overlap exists. The other purpose is the collection (from publications as well as private communications), evaluation, and publication of data in some areas where special competence exists in the Alloy Physics Section. Of interest to the center are metals, semimetals, intermetallic compounds, and alloys. Excluded are those materials which have ill-defined constitutions and heat treatments. An automated system was developed to meet the bibliographic needs of the center. This system will be described as well as the specific properties of interest. The system presently contains a complete annotated file dealing with NMR Knight shift measurements. The soft X-ray spectroscopy compilation is being kept up-to-date with the same system. (Author).

Download or read book Alloys of Uranium with Transition Metals of Groups I B to IV B written by Richard G.J. Ball and published by Springer. This book was released on 1994 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume covers binary alloys and intermetallic compounds of uranium with transition metals of the Cu, Zn, Sc (including the lanthanides), and Ti groups as well as ternary alloys containing another transition metal as a third component. The compounds UCu5, UAu2, U14Au51, U2Zn17, UZn12, and UCd11 have been shown to be heavy-fermion materials exhibiting unusual behavior as far as the heat capacity and the magnetic and electrical properties at low temperatures are concerned. The alloys of uranium with titanium and zirconium and related ternary alloys are of technological interest. Thus emphasis in this volume is placed on recent scientific as well as technological work.
Download or read book U Uranium written by Hans U. Borgstedt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alloys of Uranium with Alkali Metals, Alkaline Earths, and Elements of Main Groups III and IV. The description of uranium and its compounds, for which the Gmelin Institute has started a series of volumes supplementing the main volume of 1936, follows in its arrangement closely the order chosen for the transuranium volumes. Part A treats "The Element", Part B "The Metal and its Alloys", Part C "The Compounds", Part D "The Chemistry in Solution", and finally Part E "The Coordination Compounds". Part E, "The Coordination Compounds" comprises two volumes which already have been finished and are available - completely written in English. Series A comprises 7 volumes which are all available. Series C will comprise 14 volumes of which only volume 6 is missing. Series D consists of 4 volumes dealing with the chemistry in solution, which already have been finished and are available. The present volume describes the alloys and the intermetallic compounds with the metals of main groups I to IV - those systems with semimetals such as boron and germanium are to be found in corresponding volumes in Uranium C series. In the volume B 2 main emphasis is given to the binary systems. The most frequently investigated systems are uranium-beryllium and uranium-aluminium because of their special scientific (U-Be) and technological (U-Al) importance.

Download or read book Development of High strength Ternary and Quaternary Thorium uranium Base Alloys written by R. H. Cole and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The addition of alloying elements to base alloys of Th containing 5 and 10 wt% U was investigated with regard to alloy structures and elevated- temperature mechanical properties. The alloys developed possess elevated temperature tensile and stress-rupture strengths of essentially twice those associated with binary Th-5 and 10 wt% U alloys at 60O to 800 deg C. The greater strength of these alloys should resuit in improved resistance to radiation induced swelling at high temperatures. Noticeable improvement in elevated-temperature mechanical properties resulted from the addition of 2 and 5 wt% Zr to the Th-5 and Th-10 wt% U base alloys. Zr was found to be the most effective additive in improving elevated-temperature mechanical properties, although significant improvement was noted with additions of Nb, Mo, C, Al, and Be. Both solidsolution strengthening and dispersion strengthening of the Th --U base alloys were encountered. It was found that a fine intragranular distribution of the secondary U phase improved the mechanical properties of the alloys studied. Structures with optimum properties were produced by careful control of the arc-melting procedure and by solution heat treating at 1350 deg C followed by aging at 850 deg C. Preliminary testing was performed to determine the elevatedtemperature mechanical properties of Th metal and of the Th --U base alloys. Irradiation specimens of the most promising alloys were prepared. These specimens were encapsulated and are ready for irradiation testing at 800 deg C and for subjection to burnups of 10,000, 20,000 and 30,000 Mwd/ ton. (auth).
