Download or read book Constitutional and Political History of Uganda From 1894 to Present written by W Kanyeihamba and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2010-12-20 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If the study of Uganda's politics and history is to be raised to a higher level of intellectual excellence, the past has indeed to be studied; so must the present; and even the Future must be studied. But and it is a strong "But," all this must be done with a greater degree of level-headedness, with more honesty, and with greater objectivity. Justice George Kanyeihamba's book is a welcome effort toward that end. His treatment comprises a mix of critical analyses of a Past spanning the years from the beginning of the Declaration of the Uganda Protectorate in 1894 to the exit of Obote and the end of his Second Regime of the 1980-1985, up to the Present. The author is an expert and specialist in constitutional matters and a native of Uganda who has lived through some of the crises and upheavals he has written about here.

Download or read book International Businesses and the Challenges of Poverty in the Developing World written by F. Bird and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-22 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in a globally interconnected but economically divided world where internationally linked businesses can play a significant role in helping and/or obstructing the development of impoverished countries. Through a series of case studies, this volume examines what can be learned, both positively and critically, from the experiences of selected internationally connected firms in Nigeria, Uganda, Ghana, Vietnam, Guyana, and the Nunavik region of northern Canada. This book begins with a set of reflections on the strategies firms might adopt so that they develop both their own assets as well as those of the areas in which they operate. A team of more than two dozen researchers from the developed and developing countries conducted the research on which the essays on this and subsequent volumes are based. Dr Frederick Bird from Concordia University in Montreal directed the overall research project.

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Uganda written by Joseph Kasule and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-06-22 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uganda is one of the most fascinating countries in Africa. Situated in the middle of the Great Lakes region of Eastern Africa, it is home to diverse flora and fauna. Little wonder Winston Churchill famously named it “the Pearl of Africa”. Neighbored by South Sudan, DRC, Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda, Uganda claims the source of the River Nile and a larger share of Victoria, Africa’s largest lake. Uganda’s capital, Kampala is famous for hosting many international conferences and summits including the 2007 Commonwealth Head of Government Meeting. Uganda is witnessing rapid development, overseen by Yoweri Tibuhaburwa Museveni who has served as president since 1986, making him the longest serving leader in Uganda. Museveni came to power on the backdrop of a 5-year guerilla struggle that toppled the regimes of Milton Obote and the military junta of Tito Okello Lutwa. Historical Dictionary of Uganda, Second Edition, covers the history of Uganda using a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and a bibliography. The dictionary section covers many entries on politics, economy, foreign affairs, religion, society, culture, and important personalities. The book provides a quick access for researchers, students, tourists, and anyone interesting in learning about Uganda.

Download or read book Abu Mayanja MP written by A. B. K. Kasozi and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2024-02-01 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, Abu Mayanja MP: The intellectual star of Uganda's "Struggle" for independence and the search for a liberal democratic state, 1929-2005, is a biography of a brilliant African politician, a history of a country and a continent told through the lens and activities of an individual politician. The book breaks new ground in how Uganda and Africa have been viewed by academic and popular opinion. Mayanja's life sheds light on the last days of colonialism and the early postcolonial history of Uganda and other African countries. First, although Africa, particularly Uganda, is viewed by popular imagination through the images of dictatorial and corrupt African leaders like Amin, Obote, Mubotu, Bokassa, Bongo and others, there were, and still are, voices of reason who advocated for the advantages of good governance. Secondly, it shows that it is not only heads of states who influenced the political direction of postcolonial states in the period just before and after independence. Other actors shaped the opinions of the masses and influenced how laws were formed and implemented. Thirdly, Mayanja is one of those public intellectuals who stood up to autocracy and what he thought should be done through words and actions. He analysed political and social issues at a higher conceptual level than almost all his contemporaries He was indeed the "intellectual star" of Uganda's "struggle" for self-rule and the nine years that followed independence. His ridiculing of those in power for their failure to know or understand governance issues landed him in prison and denied him full participation in governing the Uganda postcolonial state. But he left deep footprints on Uganda's and East African political thought. Had his suggestions for managing postcolonial Uganda been followed, the country would not have suffered as severely as it has since 1966.
