Book excerpt: The Sacrament of Penance and Religious Life in Golden Age Spain explores the practice of sacramental confession in Spain between roughly 1500 and 1700. One of the most significant points of contact between the laity and ecclesiastical hierarchy, confession lay at the heart of attempts to bring religious reformation to bear upon the lives of early modern Spaniards. Rigid episcopal legislation, royal decrees, and a barrage of prescriptive literature lead many scholars to construct the sacrament fundamentally as an instrument of social control foisted upon powerless laypeople. Drawing upon a wide range of early printed and archival materials, this book considers confession as both a top-down and a bottom-up phenomenon. Rather than relying solely upon prescriptive and didactic literature, it considers evidence that describes how the people of early modern Spain experienced confession, offering a rich portrayal of a critical and remarkably popular component of early modern religiosity.

Jodi Bilinkoff's rich socioeconomic history of sixteenth-century Avila illuminates the conditions that helped to shape the religious reforms for which the city's most famous citizen is celebrated. Bilinkoff takes as her subject the period during which Avila became a center of intense religious activity and the home of a number of influential mystics and religious reformers. During this time, she notes, urban expansion and increased economic opportunity fostered the social and political aspirations of a new "middle class" of merchants, professionals, and minor clerics. This group supported the creation of religious institutions that fostered such values as individual spiritual revitalization, religious poverty, and apostolic service to the urban community. Para esto, los misioneros linguistas aprendieron las lenguas autoctonas y el resultado fue la creacion de obras linguisticas (diccionarios y gramaticas) asi como tambien textos para la instruccion religiosa cristiana (doctrinas, sermones etc.). Asimismo tomaron en cuenta teorias de lexicografia y traduccion, y tambien recurrieron a generos textuales nativos y europeos. Los aportes aqui reunidos constituyen una mirada comparativa a traves de Latinoamerica dentro de un marco amplio de disciplinas (como son la historia, la sociolinguistica, la antropologia etc.), estudiando las lenguas nahuatl, tarasco, maya, quechua, tupi, guarani y chiquitano. Al analizar los diferentes acercamientos a la traduccion, los autores llegan a resultados matizados en cuanto a los metodos misioneros, como eran prestamos y traducciones palabra- por-palabra, pero sobre todo la (re-)creacion de nuevos terminos y expresiones en la lengua ajena, frecuentemente basados en lo que se suponia que eran conceptos semanticos y gramaticales nativos. Aparte de una aparente confusion de los indigenas, en los articulos se observa la integracion del cristianismo en las culturas nativas, en la mayoria de los casos en la forma de una 'nativizacion' de la religion europea.

Book excerpt: Analyzing seventeenth-century images of the dead Christ produced by Gregorio Fern?ez, author Ilenia Col?endoza investigates how and why the artist and his patrons manipulated these images in connection with the religious literature of the time to produce striking images that moved the faithful to devotion. In so doing, she contributes new findings to the topic of Spanish sacred sculpture. The author re-examines these sculptures not only in the context of a larger sculptural group but also as independent sculptures that were intended as powerful aids to contemplation and devotion as was prescribed by the writings of San Juan de la Cruz and Luis de Granada. Combining study of the sculptural works with that of liturgical sources, she reveals the connection between the written word and the sculpted work of art. Through this interdisciplinary approach, the author links Fern?ez's sculptural program with the strategic objectives of major patrons of the period, such as the Duke of Lerma and King Philip III of Spain, both fervent defenders of the Catholic faith.
