Book Dynamic Consolidation of Metal Powders

Download or read book Dynamic Consolidation of Metal Powders written by William H. Gourdin and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have studied the shock wave consolidation of copper, 4330 steel and aluminum+6% silicon powders. We measured the Hugoniots of the unsintered powders using piezoresistive pressure sensors as well as impedance matching techniques and found that they can be well described by available models for pore collapse. An elementary model for the surface heating was developed based on the flux of energy at the interfaces between powder particles during compaction. This model was found to agree quantitatively with observations of localized microstructural modifications in recovered specimens. We found that most of the energy of the compaction shock is deposited at the particle interfaces and that powder particle morphology and specific surface area are important variables. Localized thermal modifications can be either solid state transformations or surface melting and rapid cooling can produce metastable structures. Knowledge of the shock history is essential to the interpretation and control of the consolidated microstructure. We have produced and tested consolidated aluminum+6% silicon that has tensile properties comparable to those of wrought material.

Book Unit Manufacturing Processes

Download or read book Unit Manufacturing Processes written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-01-03 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manufacturing, reduced to its simplest form, involves the sequencing of product forms through a number of different processes. Each individual step, known as an unit manufacturing process, can be viewed as the fundamental building block of a nation's manufacturing capability. A committee of the National Research Council has prepared a report to help define national priorities for research in unit processes. It contains an organizing framework for unit process families, criteria for determining the criticality of a process or manufacturing technology, examples of research opportunities, and a prioritized list of enabling technologies that can lead to the manufacture of products of superior quality at competitive costs. The study was performed under the sponsorship of the National Science Foundation and the Defense Department's Manufacturing Technology Program.

Book Titanium Powder Metallurgy

Download or read book Titanium Powder Metallurgy written by Ma Qian and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2015-02-10 with total page 649 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Titanium Powder Metallurgy contains the most comprehensive and authoritative information for, and understanding of, all key issues of titanium powder metallurgy (Ti PM). It summarizes the past, reviews the present and discusses the future of the science and technology of Ti PM while providing the world titanium community with a unique and comprehensive book covering all important aspects of titanium powder metallurgy, including powder production, powder processing, green shape formation, consolidation, property evaluation, current industrial applications and future developments. It documents the fundamental understanding and technological developments achieved since 1937 and demonstrates why powder metallurgy now offers a cost-effective approach to the near net or net shape fabrication of titanium, titanium alloys and titanium metal matrix composites for a wide variety of industrial applications. Provides a comprehensive and in-depth treatment of the science, technology and industrial practice of titanium powder metallurgy Each chapter is delivered by the most knowledgeable expert on the topic, half from industry and half from academia, including several pioneers in the field, representing our current knowledge base of Ti PM. Includes a critical review of the current key fundamental and technical issues of Ti PM. Fills a critical knowledge gap in powder metal science and engineering and in the manufacture of titanium metal and alloys

Book Powder Consolidation Using Cold Spray

Download or read book Powder Consolidation Using Cold Spray written by Atieh Moridi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book first presents different approaches to modeling of the cold spray process with the aim of extending current understanding of its fundamental principles and then describes emerging applications of cold spray. In the coverage of modeling, careful attention is devoted to the assessment of critical and erosion velocities. In order to reveal the phenomenological characteristics of interface bonding, severe, localized plastic deformation and material jet formation are studied. Detailed consideration is also given to the effect of macroscopic defects such as interparticle boundaries and subsequent splat boundary cracking on the mechanical behavior of cold spray coatings. The discussion of applications focuses in particular on the repair of damaged parts and additive manufacturing in various disciplines from aerospace to biomedical engineering. Key aspects include a systematic study of defect shape and the ability of cold spray to fill the defect, examination of the fatigue behavior of coatings for structural applications, and a novel working window at subcritical conditions to obtain porous structures. This book is exceptional in scope, and its review of finite element modelling at different length scales sheds light on future design and process improvement in emerging applications such as structural repair, metal additive manufacturing and metal foam design.

Book Die target for Dynamic Powder Consolidation

Download or read book Die target for Dynamic Powder Consolidation written by and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A die/target is disclosed for consolidation of a powder, especially an atomized rapidly solidified metal powder, to produce monoliths by the dynamic action of a shock wave, especially a shock wave produced by the detonation of an explosive charge. The die/target comprises a rectangular metal block having a square primary surface with four rectangular mold cavities formed therein to receive the powder. The cavities are located away from the geometrical center of the primary surface and are distributed around such center while also being located away from the geometrical diagonals of the primary surface to reduce the action of reflected waves so as to avoid tensile cracking of the monoliths. The primary surface is covered by a powder retention plate which is engaged by a flyer plate to transmit the shock wave to the primary surface and the powder. Spawl plates are adhesively mounted on other surfaces of the block to act as momentum traps so as to reduce reflected waves in the block.
