Best friends Noah and Walt are far from popular, but Walt is convinced junior year is their year, and he has a plan that includes wooing the girls of their dreams and becoming amazing athletes. Never mind he and Noah failed to make their baseball team yet again, and Noah’s crush since third grade, Sam, has him firmly in the friend zone. While Walt focuses on his program of jazz, podcasts, batting cages, and a “Hug Life” mentality, Noah feels stuck in status quo … until he stumbles on a stash of old love letters. Each one contains words Noah’s always wanted to say to Sam, and he begins secretly creating artwork using the lines that speak his heart. But when his art becomes public, Noah has a decision to make: continue his life in the dugout and possibly lose the girl forever, or take a swing and finally speak out. At the same time, American flags are being left around town. While some think it’s a harmless prank and others see it as a form of protest, Noah can’t shake the feeling something bigger is happening to his community. Especially after he witnesses events that hint divides and prejudices run deeper than he realized. As the personal and social tensions increase around them, Noah and Walt must decide what is really important when it comes to love, friendship, sacrifice, and fate. Book excerpt: This volume explores the reorganisation of knowledge taking place in the course of Galileo's research process extending over a period of more than thirty years, pursued within a network of exchanges with his contemporaries, and documented by a vast collection of research notes. It has revealed the challenging objects that motivated and shaped Galileo's thinking and closely followed the knowledge reorganization engendered by theses challenges. It has thus turned out, for example, that the problem of reducing the properties of pendulum motion to the laws governing naturally accelerated motion on inclined planes was the mainspring for the formation of Galileo's comprehensive theory of naturally accelerated motion.

Book Swinging City

Download or read book Swinging City written by Simon Rycroft and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2012-11-28 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book works with two contrasting imaginings of 1960s London: the one of the excess and comic vacuousness of Swinging London, the other of the radical and experimental cultural politics generated by the city's counterculture. The connections between these two scenes are mapped looking firstly at the spectacular events that shaped post-war London, then at the modernist physical and social reconstruction of the city alongside artistic experiments such as Pop and Op Art. Making extensive use of London's underground press the book then explores the replacement of this seemingly materialistic image with the counterculture of underground London from the mid-1960s. Swinging City develops the argument that these disparate threads cohere around a shared cosmology associated with a new understanding of nature which differently positioned humanity and technology. The book tracks a moment in the historical geography of London during which the city asserts itself as a post-imperial global city. Swinging London it argues, emerged as the product of this recapitalisation, by absorbing avant-garde developments from the provinces and a range of transnational, mainly transatlantic, influences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An insightful study of the progressive politics animating a great work of modernist mural painting In 1936 the Works Progress Administration’s Federal Art Project commissioned Stuart Davis (1892–1964) to paint a mural for the Williamsburg Houses, a New York City housing project. Though the mural, Swing Landscape, was never installed in its intended location, it survives as an impressive testament to Davis’s energetic, colorful brand of abstraction and the progressive politics that animated it. This study explores the painting, one of the greatest of twentieth-century America and arguably Davis’s most ambitious work. This book challenges the prevailing tendency to separate Davis’s leftist activism from his art and contextualizes Swing Landscape within 1930s abstract mural painting in New York, emphasizing the politics of abstraction. The book also offers the first comprehensive look at the Williamsburg mural commission, including works by Willem de Kooning, Ilya Bolotowsky, and others. The result is an indispensable resource on interwar modernism, mural painting, and urban development. Published in association with the Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Museum of Art, Indiana University Exhibition Schedule: Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Museum of Art, Indiana University (February 5–May 22, 2022)

Book The Science of the Perfect Swing

Download or read book The Science of the Perfect Swing written by Peter Dewhurst and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-05 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Science of the Perfect Swing appeals to those who are seeking a clear explanation of the inner workings of golf. It allows golfers to visualize the underlying physics of their sport, and so enjoy a deeper appreciation of good shot making. With numerous charts, tables, and drawings, Peter Dewhurst walks the reader through every scientific aspect of the game--including factors that many readers aren't even aware affect their game at all! Each chapter is concerned with the findings and consequences of the science on actual shot making; rather than with the science itself. The science is relegated to the back of each chapter as optional reading. The intention of the work is to foster improved technique in the light of a broader fundamental understanding of the game. The majority of case studies in the book are taken from PGA and LPGA Tour players. With this engaging treatment of the science of golf, the seeming impossibility of the achievements of the world's best players becomes all the more incredible. To drive a tiny ball hundreds of yards using a selection of equipment, to loft it over and around obstacles, to stop it on a green that it impacts at high speed, and then roll it over slopes and surface imperfections into a hole which can seem barely bigger than the golf ball itself, seems to defy, rather than illustrate, the laws of physics! Perhaps because of this, golf has remained wildly, and widely, popular for the last half-millennium. Peter Dewhurst helps clear up any confusion about the fundamentals of golf by examining all of the details from the one-second generation of speed in the swing, to the 0.0005-second explosive transfer of energy into the ball, through the dimple-powered flight, to the final elements of finesse leading to capture in the hole. Dewhurst combines expertise, from decades of award-winning engineering research and effective teaching, to make his writing engaging and educational for all readers.

Book Coyote s Swing

  • Author : David Edward Walker
  • Publisher : Washington State University Press

Download or read book Coyote s Swing written by David Edward Walker and published by Washington State University Press. This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Native foster youth brings a completed Pfizer Corporation’s "PTSD Self-Quiz" she found in a U.S. Indian Health Service clinic waiting room to her psychologist, hoping a new diagnosis will allow her to discontinue her current stimulant medication. After advocating on her behalf and that of other Native clients in his care, the psychologist is put on a "performance improvement plan" by clinic supervisors. Subsequently, a nurse practitioner at the clinic sends a letter to the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services regarding concerns over poor medical care and infection control, only to be transferred out shortly after. Coyote’s Swing reveals how the U.S. mental health system reframes Native American reactions to oppression and marginalization into "mental disorders" and "mental illness." Contemporary practices of the Indian Health Service echo historical "Indian lunacy" determinations, false imprisonment in the Hiawatha Asylum for Insane Indians, stigmatizing of Native children kidnapped to federally- and mission-run boarding schools as "feebleminded," sterilizing of Native people evaluated by white psychologists as "unfit to reproduce," and long-standing doctrines of impairment and deficiency foreign to Native values of spiritual balance and wellbeing. Immersed in this system and its history for two decades, David Edward Walker develops provocative connections between past and present while using a traditional Yakama tale as a motif. Combining narrative ease and a scholar’s eye, he exposes how the "white man’s Cat" continues to push Coyote, Sacred Trickster, on a "swing" of Western mental health ideology that has threatened Native lives and culture for over 150 years. Coyote’s Swing combines Walker’s firsthand experiences as a consulting psychologist with rare history and sociocultural critique.

Book excerpt: Electro swing is a relatively recent musical style and scene which combines the music of the swing era with that of the age of electronic dance music. Chris Inglis considers key questions about electro swing’s place in contemporary society, including what it may mean for a contemporary genre to be so reliant upon the influences of the past; the different ways in which jazz may be presented to a modern audience; how one may go about defining jazz in today's postmodern world; and how this emergent genre may be analysed in terms of the wider issues of race and class consumption.

Book The Uncrowned King of Swing

Download or read book The Uncrowned King of Swing written by Jeffrey Magee and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2005-01-13 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If Benny Goodman was the "King of Swing," then Fletcher Henderson was the power behind the throne. Now Jeffrey Magee offers a fascinating account of Henderson's musical career, throwing new light on the emergence of modern jazz and the world that created it. Drawing on an unprecedented combination of sources, including sound recordings and hundreds of scores that have been available only since Goodman's death, Magee illuminates Henderson's musical output, from his early work as a New York bandleader, to his pivotal role in building the Kingdom of Swing. He shows how Henderson, standing at the forefront of the New York jazz scene during the 1920s and '30s, assembled the era's best musicians, simultaneously preserving jazz's distinctiveness and performing popular dance music that reached a wide audience. Magee reveals how, in Henderson's largely segregated musical world, black and white musicians worked together to establish jazz, how Henderson's style rose out of collaborations with many key players, how these players deftly combined improvised and written music, and how their work negotiated artistic and commercial impulses. Whether placing Henderson's life in the context of the Harlem Renaissance or describing how the savvy use of network radio made the Henderson-Goodman style a national standard, Jeffrey Magee brings to life a monumental musician who helped to shape an era. "An invaluable survey of Henderson's life and music." --Don Heckman, Los Angeles Times "Magee has written an important book, illuminating an era too often reduced to its most familiar names. Goodman might have been the King of Swing, but Henderson here emerges as that kingdom's chief architect." --Boston Globe "Excellent.... Jazz fans have waited 30 years for a trained musicologist...to evaluate Henderson's strengths and weaknesses and attempt to place him in the history of American music." --Will Friedwald, New York Sun
