Book Management and Conservation of the African Great Lakes

Download or read book Management and Conservation of the African Great Lakes written by R. C. M. Crul and published by UNESCO. This book was released on 1998 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Victoria, Tanganyika and Malawi lakes serve as renewable sources of freshwater and fish, besides fulfilling other important functions in their riparian countries. Their ecosystems are in danger, however. Research on the lakes' ecosystems and their main environment problems is a prerequisite to the formulation of strategies and action plans for integrated environmental management of the lakes' basins. This volume presents data collected and the main results of hydrological studies.

Book The East African Great Lakes Limnology Palaeolimnology and Biodiversity

Download or read book The East African Great Lakes Limnology Palaeolimnology and Biodiversity written by Eric O. Odada and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-03-09 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Second International Symposium on the East African Lakes was held from 10-15 January 2000 at Club Makokola on the southern shore of Lake Malawi. The symposium was organized by the International Decade for the East African Lakes (IDEAL), a research consortium of African, European and North American scientists interested in promoting the investigations of African Great Lakes as archives of environmental and climatic dynamics. Over one hundred African, European and North American scientists with special expertise in the tropical lakes participated in the symposium which featured compelling presentations on the limnology, climatology, palaeoclimatology and biodiversity of the East African Lakes. It is their papers that comprise this book. The large lakes of East Africa are important natural resources that are heavily utilized by their bordering countries for transportation, water supply, fisheries, waste disposal, recreation and tourism. The lakes are unique in many ways: they are sensitive to climatic change and their circulation dynamics, water-column chemistry and biological complexity differ significantly from large lakes at higher latitudes; they have long, continuous, high resolution records of past climatic change; and they have rich and diverse populations of endemic organisms. These unique properties and the significance of the palaeolimnological records demand and attract research interest from around the world.

Book From Limnology to Fisheries Lake Tanganyika and Other Large Lakes

Download or read book From Limnology to Fisheries Lake Tanganyika and Other Large Lakes written by O.V. Lindqvist and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on modern limnology and environmental research, syntheses of the composition, functions and production of pelagic ecosystems are being provided in the Great Lakes of Africa. Special attention is given to Lake Tanganyika and recent research activities. New findings on relationships between lake hydrophysics, climatic patterns and biological productivity are presented. The roles of organic matters and microbes are discussed. The implications of environmental and fishery research on regional fisheries management are presented, together with the outcomes of the recent major research projects in lakes Tanganyika and Malawi, particularly in practical fisheries development.

Book East African Rift Valley Lakes

Download or read book East African Rift Valley Lakes written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the assessment of Lakes Turkana, Tanganyika, Victoria and Malawi, the largest of the East African Rift Valley Lakes and among the oldest lakes in the world. The lakes are renowned for their high endemism and support a vital socio-economic service as a core for transportation, water supply, fisheries, recreation and tourism. Anthropogenic impacts have significantly altered the ecosystem function of these lakes. Lake Victoria, shared by three countries and influenced by two more in the catchment area, was targeted for causal chain and policy option analysis. Root causes related to pollution and overexploitation are discussed and policy options to address the driving issues are presented.--Publisher's description.

Book East African Ecosystems and Their Conservation

Download or read book East African Ecosystems and Their Conservation written by T. R. McClanahan and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1996 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: East Africa is one of the most diverse and interesting tropical area on the planet. It is home not only to the last great megafaunal assemblage, but also to human populations with the highest growth rates. This book draws on the expertise of leading ecologists, each intimately familiar with a particular set of East African ecosystems, to provide the first in-depth and integrated account of the ecology, management, threats, and conservation of these diverse ecosystems. Summarizing the tremendous wealth of scientific research that has come out of East Africa in the last few decades, each chapter analyzes a given ecosystem type, taking the reader through the basics of its ecology, its historical use (and misuse) by humans, and its prospects for conservation. Throughout the book, linkages and similarities among ecosystems are emphasized, the historical and contemporary role of humans in shaping these ecosystems is considered, fundamental principles of ecology are considered, and interesting case studies are highlighted. Students and researchers in ecology, conservation biology, and environmental sciences will find this book useful in their work.

Book Limnology Climatology and Paleoclimatology of the East African Lakes

Download or read book Limnology Climatology and Paleoclimatology of the East African Lakes written by Thomas C Johnson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-08-13 with total page 679 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The large lakes of the East African Rift Valley are among the oldest on Earth, and are vital resources for the people of their basins. They are unique among the large lakes of the world in terms of their sensitivity to climatic change, rich and diverse populations of endemic species, circulation dynamics and water-column chemistry, and long, continuous records of past climatic change. A comprehensive study of the large African lakes is long overdue. The scientific justification for such an effort is noted in the previous paragraph and is illustrated in great detail in this volume. Societal need for the sustainable utilization of these lakes offers an even more compelling reason for examination of biological food webs, water quality, and past climate variability in East Africa. The lakes provide the most important source of protein for the people of the African Rift Valley, and fish populations are shifting dramatically in response to fishing pressure, introduction of exotic species, land use impact on water quality, and perhaps climatic change. Current estimates of primary productivity, the underpinning of the food resource, are extremely crude and based on only a few spot measurements.

Book Management Co management Or No Management

Download or read book Management Co management Or No Management written by Eyolf Jul-Larsen and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2003 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report synthesizes the findings of ten case studies published in FAO Fisheries Technical Paper 426/2. The case studies have been conducted in five medium-sized lakes in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The synthesis focuses on three features relevant for the SADC region: How has fishing effort developed in these lakes over the last 50 years? What causes changes in fishing effort? How do fishing effort and environmental factors compare in their effects on the regeneration of fish stocks?
