Book excerpt: Empirical studies suggest that mediated interactions function similarly to interpersonal interactions. Media effects research has found that media exposure can contribute to positive evaluations of often-stigmatized or marginalized minority groups through the process of mediated intergroup contact. Although much of this research has been focused on depictions of race in the media, recent studies have observed prosocial effects for sexual minority groups. Research on social perceptions and prejudice reduction has found that group-level perceptions, in particular, can be altered to influence how outgroup members are perceived and evaluated, subsequently influencing attitudes toward the outgroup. Few studies have examined the influence of group-level perceptions, the extent to which particular social identities are made salient to the ingroup viewer, on the process of mediated intergroup contact. The purpose of this dissertation is to consider the antecedents and consequences of social identity salience, particularly in the context of straight viewers’ perceptions of complex, novel gay characters as a result of mediated intergroup contact. Through a series of three studies, this research program applies the assumptions of both media effects research and prejudice reduction models in order to examine the role of social identity salience on improving intergroup outcomes in a mediated setting. Study one was an experimental study that examined whether the nature of the depiction of gay characters in entertainment media influences the social identities straight viewers find salient in those characters as well as their evaluations of gay men. Study two was a two-part cross-sectional study that explored whether the social identity straight viewers ultimately find salient when exposed to complex, novel gay characters is a function of media messages consumed in their television diet and/or other individual characteristics like homonegativity towards gay men. Finally, study three was a cross-sectional study that investigated whether social, attitudinal, and demographic factors that shape perceptions of complex, novel gay characters among straight viewers may be the same factors that potentially shape evaluations of sexual minorities. Results from this study provide a broader understanding of the factors that influence how novel, complex characters from often-stigmatized social groups are perceived and evaluated by ingroup viewers. Findings from study one and two suggest that straight viewers’ evaluations of gay men may be less likely to change as a result of mediated contact experiences than prior research has suggested. Additionally, the quality of an individual’s habitual consumption of particular media messages plays a role in how subsequent outgroup characters are perceived. Finally, results from study three indicate that character perception is shaped by some of the same factors that inform person perception and evaluations and judgments of social groups. Ultimately, the findings of these three studies suggest that ingroup viewers’ perceptions of outgroup characters are informed by particular social and attitudinal factors as well as media diet. Increasing the frequency and complexity of depictions of outgroup characters may do little in the way of reducing negative attitudes among prejudiced viewers, despite popular belief, if less attention is given to the factors that inform how such novel depictions are interpreted and evaluated by these viewers.
