Book Conquering the Boundaries of Friendship

Download or read book Conquering the Boundaries of Friendship written by Mark Roman and published by Lioncrest Publishing. This book was released on 2019-10-15 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Men are at a disadvantage when it comes to forming relationships with other men. As boys, men are taught to suppress their emotions and to avoid vulnerability at all costs--to be winners and warriors. Mark Roman spent a year collecting interviews with men from dozens of countries around the world and found that these societal and cultural boundaries exist everywhere, and have created a male population that deeply longs for friendship, yet can't find it. This doesn't just hurt men--it hurts the women, children, and families who love those men. It results in men who struggle with authenticity, who don't know how to share and live fully in their relationships. This book will encourage as many men as possible to develop and maintain deep and meaningful relationships with other men. Mark Roman shares stories and techniques that have helped other men find success in crossing societal boundaries and forming male friendships--and in turn helped them become better, happier, and more connected humans.

Book Buddy System

Download or read book Buddy System written by Geoffrey Greif and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been made of the complex social arrangements that girls and women navigate, but little scholarly or popular attention has focused on what friendship means to men. Drawing on in-depth interviews with nearly 400 men, therapist and researcher Geoffrey L. Greif takes readers on a guided tour of male friendships, explaining what makes them work, why they are vital to the health of individuals and communities, and how to build the kinds of friendships that can lead to longer and happier lives. Another 120 conversations with women help map the differences in what men and women seek from friendships and what, if anything, men can learn from women's relationships. The guiding feature of the book is Greif's typology of male friendships: he dispels the myth that men don't have friends, showing that men have must, trust, just, and rust friends. A must friend is the best friend a man absolutely must call with earthshaking news. A trust friend is liked and trusted but not necessarily held as close as a must friend. Just friends are casual acquaintances, while rust friends have a long history together and can drift in and out of each other's lives, essentially picking up where they last left off. Understanding the role each of these types of friends play across men's lives reveals fascinating developmental patterns, such as how men cope with stress and conflict and how they make and maintain friendships, and how their friends keep them active and happy.Through the lively words of men themselves, and detailed profiles of men from their twenties to their nineties, readers may be surprised to find what friendships offer men--as well as their families and communities--and are sure to learn what makes their own relationships tick.

Book Conquering Shame for Women

Download or read book Conquering Shame for Women written by Lee Tolar and published by Worldwide Discipleship Association. This book was released on 2023-07-22 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conquering Shame is a workbook that helps people take an in-depth look at what shame is, the effects of shame in their life, and how to deal with their shame and overcome it. What is shame? It is the deep belief and painful feeling that a person is flawed, defective, and worth less than others. Shame causes us to see ourselves as weak, inadequate, insignificant, unlovable, or not particularly talented. It can also cause us to hide our imagined defectiveness and try to be who we think people want us to be, not who we really are. Shame can cause us to have difficulty facing our sins and confessing them to God and to those we have offended. By withholding part of ourselves from God and other people, we won’t grow spiritually or be able to establish and maintain close relationships with people. This workbook is designed for use by a small group that is led by a trained facilitator. The RYH Conquering Shame workbook is Book 3 in a series of emotional and relational healing workbooks created by Restoring Your Heart (RYH), a healing ministry of Worldwide Discipleship Association. It is recommended that people complete the RYH Processing Pain and RYH Understanding Emotions workbooks prior to experiencing this workbook. Conquering Shame is a 16-week group experience that includes a unique "connecting with God" exercise. Group members will work together on dealing with their shame in the context of a safe community. The suggested method is for the group to cover one lesson per week. During the week before each meeting, group members will read the lesson and complete the answers to the questions at their own individual pace. At the group meetings, there will be opportunities to share answers to many of the questions and, as the group progresses, to bond with the other group members and bring God into their healing process.

Book Christianity and the Contest for Manhood in Late Antiquity

Download or read book Christianity and the Contest for Manhood in Late Antiquity written by Nathan D. Howard and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-11-24 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Nathan Howard explores gender and identity formation in fourth-century Cappadocia, where pro-Nicene bishops used a rhetoric of contest that aligned with conventions of classical Greek masculinity. Howard demonstrates that epistolary exhibitions served as 'a locus for' asserting manhood in the fourth century. These performances illustrate how a culture of orality that had defined manhood among civic elites was reframed as a contest whereby one accrued status through merits of composition. Howard shows how the Cappadocians' rhetoric also reordered the body and materiality as components of a maleness over which they moderated. He interrogates fourth-century theological conflict as part of a rhetorical battle over claims to manhood that supported the Cappadocians' theology and cast doubt on non-Trinitarian rivals, whom they cast as effeminate and disingenuous. Investigating accounts of pro-Nicene protagonists overcoming struggles, Howard establishes that tropes based on classical standards of gender contributed to the formation of Trinitarian orthodoxy.
