The first definitive book on contemporary Chinese furniture design, which includes not only an in–depth analysis of historic Chinese furniture design in its introduction, but importantly relates the past to what is happening now in Chinese furniture design. Includes individual entries, many based on in–depth interviews with leading figures within the Chinese furniture design, that provide insightful personal perspectives on the rapid evolution of Chinese furniture design over the last decade or so. The publication of this book marks the twenty–fifth anniversary of the Furniture China expo. "Featuring over 400 exemplary works representative of the new wave of creativity in modern Chinese furniture design. Channeling the spirit of the Song and Ming dynasties, as well as other Chinese styles and themes, the designs express a 21st Century Sinocentric national romanticism." – China.org.cn An excerpt from the book: "Since the mid–1990s a definable movement in contemporary Chinese furniture design has been growing and evolving, and has now reached such creative critical mass that it is possible to speak of it enjoying a 'moment'. The publication of this book is intended to share this remarkable design story with the wider world, while introducing the work and ideas of its leading protagonists. The exceptional quality and innovation of the furniture associated with what has already become known as 'New Chinese Design' will undoubtedly set in motion a significant reappraisal of contemporary Chinese design in general. But what is more, this extraordinary development may initiate the tipping of the balance of international design influence from West to East, such is its astonishing creative vitality and snowballing momentum."

Download or read book The China Collectors written by Karl E. Meyer and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2015-03-10 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thanks to Salem sea captains, Gilded Age millionaires, curators on horseback and missionaries gone native, North American museums now possess the greatest collections of Chinese art outside of East Asia itself. How did it happen? The China Collectors is the first full account of a century-long treasure hunt in China from the Opium Wars and the Boxer Rebellion to Mao Zedong's 1949 ascent. The principal gatherers are mostly little known and defy invention. They included "foreign devils" who braved desert sandstorms, bandits and local warlords in acquiring significant works. Adventurous curators like Langdon Warner, a forebear of Indiana Jones, argued that the caves of Dunhuang were already threatened by vandals, thereby justifying the removal of frescoes and sculptures. Other Americans include George Kates, an alumnus of Harvard, Oxford and Hollywood, who fell in love with Ming furniture. The Chinese were divided between dealers who profited from the artworks' removal, and scholars who sought to protect their country's patrimony. Duanfang, the greatest Chinese collector of his era, was beheaded in a coup and his splendid bronzes now adorn major museums. Others in this rich tapestry include Charles Lang Freer, an enlightened Detroit entrepreneur, two generations of Rockefellers, and Avery Brundage, the imperious Olympian, and Arthur Sackler, the grand acquisitor. No less important are two museum directors, Cleveland's Sherman Lee and Kansas City's Laurence Sickman, who challenged the East Coast's hegemony. Shareen Blair Brysac and Karl E. Meyer even-handedly consider whether ancient treasures were looted or salvaged, and whether it was morally acceptable to spirit hitherto inaccessible objects westward, where they could be studied and preserved by trained museum personnel. And how should the US and Canada and their museums respond now that China has the means and will to reclaim its missing patrimony?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Featuring 70 works in various media--paintings, calligraphy, photographs, woodblock prints, video, and sculpture--that were created during the past three decades, Ink Art: Past as Present in Contemporary China will demonstrate how China's ancient pattern of seeking cultural renewal through the reinterpretation of past models remains a viable creative path. Although all of the artists have transformed their sources through new modes of expression, visitors will recognize thematic, aesthetic, or technical attributes in their creations that have meaningful links to China's artistic past. The exhibition will be organized thematically into four parts and will include such highlights as Xu Bing's dramatic Book from the Sky (ca. 1988), an installation that will fill an entire gallery; Family Tree (2000), a set of vivid photographs documenting a performance by Zhang Huan in which his facial features--and his identity--are obscured gradually by physiognomic texts that are inscribed directly onto his face; and Map of China (2006) by Ai Weiwei, which is constructed entirely of wood salvaged from demolished Qing dynasty temples." --

Book Reinventing Tradition in a New World

Download or read book Reinventing Tradition in a New World written by Ying Wang and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a record of an important exhibition--Reinventing Tradition in the New World: The Arts of Gu Wenda, Wang Mansheng, Xu Bing, and Zhang Hongtu--held at Gettysburg College's Schmucker Art Gallery in late 2004.Each of the featured artists has a distinctive style and voice, and the diversity of the objects in the catalogue is great, ranging from large stone slabs engraved with poetry to a tiny glass bubble containing only air. Despite these artistic divergences, the four artists are linked by cultural experiences. All grew up in socialist China and later immigrated to New York City. The artists also share a fascination with the power of language. In his or her own way, each artist is concerned with, in Katheryn M. Linduff's phrasing, "words and their significance, whether conventional and readable or fictional and indecipherable." Essays by Wang Ying, Yan Sun, and Regan Golden-McNerney, interviews with each of the artists, and a glossary of Chinese terms supplement this fully illustrated catalogue.

Breathtaking in workmanship, colour and design, they were made for a purpose, and it is those created for celebrations that dominate the selection in this book. As well as dealing with technique and influence, Wilson tells the story of each piece - why it was made and for whom - and introduces us to a galaxy of characters from China's history and legend.
