Book Congress Human Nature and the Federal Debt

Download or read book Congress Human Nature and the Federal Debt written by Cole S. Brembeck and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1991-05-30 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume takes a non-economic approach to the issue of the federal deficit. By identifying fiscal problems as merely the visible symptoms of a basic behavioral dynamic common to all people, Cole S. Brembeck undertakes a singular study of how human interests perpetuate the deficit and how, therefore, the deficit issue reflects the nature of the representation in the federal government. Solutions to the worsening deficit crisis can then be explored by shifting the primary focus away from money, budgets, and expenditures and toward people, power, and politics. Fourteen essays discuss different aspects of the human factor in the federal debt by analyzing how members of the U.S. Congress spend public money. After establishing the relationship between money and human behavior (the psychological groundwork of the entire work), attention then turns to the human and political motivations that result in the incurring of debt and how Congress's monetary practices demonstrate the psychology of public spending. A subject that could constitute an attack on Congress receives fresh insight--rather than isolating Congress as a body with a unique propensity for spending, Brembeck acknowledges the relevant force that is a common human motivator. The work aims at redefining the central issue of the debt debate and concludes with proposals that may help to remedy the financial crisis, based on the premise that the federal debt is a human, not a fiscal, problem.

Book Congressional Budgeting

Download or read book Congressional Budgeting written by Patrick Ivan Fisher and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2005 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Congressional Budgeting, Patrick Fisher analyzes the problems inherent in the congressional budget process, and studies why congress makes the budgetary decisions that it does. Fisher argues that it is the representational nature of Congress that makes budgeting such a flawed process. Budgeting requires Congress to compromise parochial interests for the well being of the entire nation, focusing on macro-level budget decisions. It is the parochial nature of congressional budgeting that is key to understanding the predicament Congress confronts when budgeting.

Download or read book A Fiscal Cliff written by John Merrifield and published by Cato Institute. This book was released on 2020-10-20 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "'A Fiscal Cliff' is precisely the right book for perilous fiscal times. Giants in economics and public policy offer a spirited defense of fiscal rules critically needed to protect our children and grandchildren from a bleak future." -Richard K. Vedder, Distinguished Professor of Economics Emeritus, Ohio University/p> The unsustainable, and still rapidly growing, U.S. federal government debt is a classic case of ‘'in denial.” Indeed, we are no closer to a solution to the debt crisis than we were ten years ago when the Simpson-Bowles Commission issued a report with recommendations to address the nation's debt crisis. The bipartisan Commission fell short of the supermajority vote required to submit their recommendations to Congress. President Trump declared a debt crisis, but didn't act like it. Various commissions and think tanks have made numerous recommendations. In 2019, a Congressional Committee was appointed to recommend budget process reforms, but that Committee could not agree on any recommendations to submit to Congress. While the dominant sentiment is that maybe if we ignore it, it will just go away, the debt crisis will not just vanish. A Fiscal Cliff: New Perspectives on the U.S. Debt Crisis is a timely addition to a critical policy discussion.

Book The Global Debt Bomb

Download or read book The Global Debt Bomb written by James L. Clayton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within a historical perspective, Clayton clearly explains the "culture of debt" - its definition, how it got to be such a major burden, why we can't live without it, and ways to manage it more efficiently. He addresses the development of debt over the course of the 20th century in both the US and world economies. This comprehensive multidisciplinary analysis covers all aspects of debt - benefits and necessity; the impact (both good and bad) on individuals, corporations and governments; and lessons to be learned from the past. Clayton, drawing on current research and extensive primary data in economics, political science, and history, concludes that with our rapacious accumulation of debt and common-place use of "debt-finance", our society has set itself up for a significant financial decline.

Book A General Theory of Acquisitivity

Download or read book A General Theory of Acquisitivity written by Wayne Jett and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Greed is good!” Is this the best argument to be made on behalf of human aspirations and the free market? Acquisitivity uproots the “greed is good” philosophy, showing it to be both wrong and largely irrelevant in defining human nature and the dynamics of economic progress. The author looks behind Adam Smith’s The Wealth of Nations to examine the origin and purpose of human conduct in the free market. The result is a purely conceived natural mechanism centered in each individual for efficient allocation of resources to the most productive and innovative person. Society is the indirect beneficiary. Acquisitivity brings Adam Smith and The Wealth of Nations to the Twenty First Century where the acquisitive energy of every individual can ride the Internet. The stock markets, business, education and, hopefully, governments will never be the same again.
