Book Modern Trends and Research in Intermodal Transportation

Download or read book Modern Trends and Research in Intermodal Transportation written by Aleksander Sładkowski and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-21 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a specific technical solution, called intermodal transport, which became the basic technological solution that made it possible to provide global interregional transport. Every day, new technical, technological, and organizational solutions appear that significantly affect the further development of this industry. However, there are certain local differences between regions. In addition, an essential factor is the exchange of experience between scientists from different countries. Accordingly, the purpose of this monothematic book is to acquaint readers with the achievements of scientists dealing with this topic and living in different regions. Scientists and specialists from Poland, Germany, Great Britain, USA, Romania, Bulgaria, Russia, Italy, Kazakhstan, and Lithuania participated in the writing of individual chapters of this book. This book is intended for professionals, teachers, students, and others who are interested in new approaches to solving transport problems.

Book Shipping Strategy

Download or read book Shipping Strategy written by Peter Lorange and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-23 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The shipping industry has an impact on each and every one of us every day. Ships transport the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the cars we drive, the materials used to build our homes, and the fuel that heats them. Yet traditional shipping companies - ones that combine various aspects of shipping under one organizational roof - are on the decline. They are gradually being replaced by new, more specialized companies with more strategic clarity and managerial focus. In Shipping Strategy Peter Lorange draws on his extensive experience in the shipping industry to show how companies can adapt to the fast-moving and volatile world of maritime business by devising strategies for future success, including specialization and innovation.

Book excerpt: "The purpose of this inquiry is to understand any long-term trends, structural changes, and impediments that impact the efficiency and dependability of Australia's maritime logistics system and connected supply chains. As part of this, the inquiry should have regard to operational cost drivers including industrial relations, infrastructure constraints, data sharing and technology uptake in Australia's ports and related transportation networks in order to assess the overall competitiveness of Australia's ports. The inquiry should also identify any mechanisms available to address identified issues"--Terms of reference.

Book Measuring the Impact of Port Congestion on Containership Freight Rates

Download or read book Measuring the Impact of Port Congestion on Containership Freight Rates written by Nektarios Michail and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We examine the impact of port congestion on containership freight rates. Our results show that port congestion has a positive and significant effect on containership freight rates. However, a 1% increase in port congestion in North America or Europe has an effect of approximately 0.5% on shipping freight rates, while an increase in Asian congestion has a pass-through of approximately 30%. This suggests that the effect on freight rates is driven mostly by the importing region (e.g. North America) and less by the manufacturing region (i.e. Asia). The results are in line with the “last mile problem”, given that these issues occur at the end of the supply chain. Furthermore, this is also in line with the derived demand system in shipping. A return from the October 2021 to the pre-pandemic congestion levels would lead to at least a 30% decline in freight costs.

Book Intermodal Freight Terminals

Download or read book Intermodal Freight Terminals written by Jason Monios and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-20 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much work has been done on port governance yet little has addressed intermodal terminal governance, despite the clear similarities. This book fills that gap by establishing a governance framework for situating analysis of intermodal terminals throughout their life cycle. A version of the product life cycle theory is amended with governance theory to produce a framework covering each stage of the terminal’s life cycle, from the initial planning to the many decisions taken regarding the public/private split in funding mechanisms, ownership, selecting an operator, specifying KPIs to the operator, setting fees, earning profit, ensuring fair access to all rail service operators, and finally to reconcessioning the terminal to a new operator, managing the handover and maintaining the terminal throughout its life cycle. An institutional analysis of stakeholder relations, situated within a governance framework, illuminates these issues and enables not only conceptualisation and greater understanding of the geography of intermodal transport, but also decision-making and goal-setting by planners and policy makers. This book thus has three functions: first, as a textbook on the planning and operation of intermodal terminals; second, as a presentation of recent empirical research on intermodal terminal governance; third, as a framework for future research in which the broad field of analysis of intermodal transport can be viewed through a single lens and used to inform geographers, policymakers and planners.

Book Dry Ports A Global Perspective

Download or read book Dry Ports A Global Perspective written by Rickard Bergqvist and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As centres for logistics activities, seaports have traditionally been the focus of maritime logistics chains. However, changes in production patterns, supported by the development of rapid transport of goods over long distances, have altered the logistics landscape. As a result, the relevance of port hinterland transport has become more important, with a consequent need for the high utilisation of transport resources and infrastructure through the consolidation of cargo flows and for seaports to extend their influence within their hinterlands to increase their competitiveness. The development worldwide of inland ports, terminals and dryports in their various forms, together with associated new functions and strategies, address these challenges in diverse ways to realise the potential benefits that come from the successful implementation of inland ports that connect seamlessly into transportation systems. This book comprises case studies and state-of-the-art examples of dryports in different parts of the world that have varying economic, social, institutional and environmental realities and which exhibit the complexity of, and diverse approaches to, this recent logistics phenomenon.
