Book The EU Promoting Regional Integration and Conflict Resolution

Download or read book The EU Promoting Regional Integration and Conflict Resolution written by Thomas Diez and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-02-16 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive study into the promotion of regional integration as a central pillar of European Union (EU) relations with the rest of the world. It is a strategy to deal with a core security challenge: the transformation of conflicts and, in particular, regional conflicts. Yet to what extent has the promotion of regional integration been successful in transforming conflicts? What can we regard as the core mechanisms of such an impact? This volume offers a comprehensive assessment of the nexus between promoting integration and conflict transformation. The authors systematically compare the consequences of EU involvement in eight conflicts in four world regions within a common framework. In doing so, they focus on the promotion of integration as a preventative strategy to avoid conflicts turning violent and as a long-term strategy to transform violent conflicts by placing them in a broader institutional context. The book will be of use to students and scholars interested in European foreign policy, comparative regionalism, and conflict resolution.

Book Fictions of Integration

Download or read book Fictions of Integration written by Naomi Lesley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-03 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how children’s and young adult literature addresses and interrogates the legacies of American school desegregation. Such literature narrates not only the famous battles to implement desegregation in the South, in places like Little Rock, Arkansas, but also more insidious and less visible legacies, such as re-segregation within schools through the mechanism of disability diagnosis. Novelizations of children’s experiences with school desegregation comment upon the politics of getting African-American children access to white schools; but more than this, as school stories, they also comment upon how structural racism operates in the classroom and mutates, over the course of decades, through the pedagogical practices depicted in literature for young readers. Lesley combines approaches from critical race theory, disability studies, and educational philosophy in order to investigate how the educational market simultaneously constrains how racism in schools can be presented to young readers and also provides channels for radical critiques of pedagogy and visions of alternative systems. The volume examines a range of titles, from novels that directly engage the Brown v. Board of Education decision, such as Sharon Draper’s Fire From the Rock and Dorothy Sterling’s Mary Jane, to novels that engage less obvious legacies of desegregation, such as Cynthia Voigt’s Dicey’s Song, Sharon Flake’s Pinned, Virginia Hamilton’s The Planet of Junior Brown, and Louis Sachar’s Holes. This book will be of interest to scholars of American studies, children’s literature, and educational philosophy and history.

Book The Role of Model Integration in Complex Systems Modelling

Download or read book The Role of Model Integration in Complex Systems Modelling written by Manish Patel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-10-02 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Model integration – the process by which different modelling efforts can be brought together to simulate the target system – is a core technology in the field of Systems Biology. In the work presented here model integration was addressed directly taking cancer systems as an example. An in-depth literature review was carried out to survey the model forms and types currently being utilised. This was used to formalise the main challenges that model integration poses, namely that of paradigm (the formalism on which a model is based), focus (the real-world system the model represents) and scale. A two-tier model integration strategy, including a knowledge-driven approach to address model semantics, was developed to tackle these challenges. In the first step a novel description of models at the level of behaviour, rather than the precise mathematical or computational basis of the model, is developed by distilling a set of abstract classes and properties. These can accurately describe model behaviour and hence describe focus in a way that can be integrated with behavioural descriptions of other models. In the second step this behaviour is decomposed into an agent-based system by translating the models into local interaction rules. The book provides a detailed and highly integrated presentation of the method, encompassing both its novel theoretical and practical aspects, which will enable the reader to practically apply it to their model integration needs in academic research and professional settings. The text is self-supporting. It also includes an in-depth current bibliography to relevant research papers and literature. The review of the current state of the art in tumour modelling provides added value.

Book Middle Way Philosophy 2 The Integration of Desire

Download or read book Middle Way Philosophy 2 The Integration of Desire written by Robert M. Ellis and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-02-19 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are not single selves, but constantly meet conflicts of desire both within and beyond ourselves. We meet conflict at different levels, from everyday distraction, to the suffering of the addict, through even to world war. The integration of desire is the process of bringing opposing desires to work together, whether at the psychological or the political level. Robert M Ellis here brings together approaches that have previously been separated, drawing on ethics, psychology, philosophy, history, politics, and Buddhism to suggest a common pattern in the resolution of conflict at all levels. This is the second volume of a planned 5-volume series on Middle Way Philosophy, and follows the first volume, which set out an overall philosophical approach to applying the Buddha's Middle Way in the modern Western context. The Jungian concept of integration is here combined with the philosophical approach of the Middle Way to offer a practical way forward beyond absolutism and relativism

Download or read book Integrating the Balkans written by Máire Braniff and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-06-30 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emerging from a decade of violent ethnic and inter-state conflict during the 1990s, the countries of the Western Balkans entered a phase of rebuilding and reconciliation. Due to the key role played by the EU in the region's rebuilding efforts, "Integrating the Balkans" explores this institution's considerable efforts to influence and shape the nature of state, society and foreign relations, as it utilised the promise of membership as a vital tool to exert its influence. The picture that materialises is one of the EU's discernible, but often contradictory, impact as it offers the carrot of EU membership in the hope that the legacies of the past conflict can be re-evaluated, re-imagined and transformed. By also analysing the conditions that come with EU aid, such as co-operation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), Maire Braniff offers an extremely important perspective for all those involved in the study and practice of the processes of European integration and post-conflict resolution.

This book was released on with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The balance of economic and political powers is indeed changing. Newer powers like China are emerging through shared economic partnerships and this creates opportunities to grow and brings about new challenges in the stability, growth, and security of regional and global economy. The economic synergy of the Belt and Road is evolving, and it is resonating and impacting geopolitics, geoeconomics, and geostrategies. Central Asia is the new frontier, and it has the capacity to become a major global contributor. A heightened sense of continuum economic realization through collaboration is capable of bringing and showing prosperity and progress to the larger region. The work made in this research is in support of the Belt and Road initiatives, however, the focus of the research was to assess economic readiness of Central Asia. China is ready with its resources, its finances, and its manpower to take on the BRI challenges towards achieving national prosperity and solidarity glory for China. For Central Asia, the BRI is an important feat that it needs to secure for its own development course, but how ready are they? This research study is the gate that opens up to new and more of such works for the next 30 years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Article 31(3)(c) VCLT and the Principle of Systemic Integration: Normative Shadows in Plato’s Cave the author tackles a provision on treaty interpretation that has risen in prominence, Article 31(3)(c) VCLT. This article, which enshrines the principle of systemic integration, and its exact scope has become and continues to be a hotly debated subject in academic and judicial circles. Through an examination of both its written and unwritten elements, the author argues that the ‘proximity criterion’ is the optimal way of understanding and utilizing this provision, that conflict resolution principles may be of use within Article 31(3)(c) and finally, that the principle of systemic integration is indispensable not only for interpreting treaty provisions but customary international law as well.

Download or read book Conflict and the Environment written by N.P. Gleditsch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nils Petter Gleditsch International Peace Research Institute, Oslo (PRIO) & Department of Sociology and Political Science, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trond heim This book could hardly have happened but for the end of the Cold War. The decline of the East-West conflict has opened up the arena for increased attention to other lines of conflict, in Europe and at the global level. Environmental disruption, not a new phenomenon by any means, is a chief beneficiary of the shift in priorities in the public debate. The Scientific and Environmental Affairs Divi sion of NATO has moved with the times and has defined environmental security as one of its priority areas for cooperation with Central and Eastern Europe and countries of the former Soviet Union. This book is the main output of an Advanced Research Workshop (ARW), held in Bolkesjl/l, Norway, 12-16 June 1996. I would like to acknowledge the personal support of L. Veiga da Cunha, Director of the Priority Area on Environmental Security. Research on these issues is now very much a collaborative effort across former lines of division in Europe. NATO encourages, indeed requires, that this be reflected in the composition of the participants, as well as the organizing committee. This meeting was organized by a group of five people from five different countries: Lothar Brock (Germany), Nils Petter Gleditsch (Norway), Thomas Homer-Dixon (Canada), Renat Perelet (Co-Director, Russia), and Evan Vlachos (USA).
