Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sharp and entertaining essay collection about the importance of multiple forms of love and friendship in a world designed for couples, from a laser-precise new voice. Sometimes it seems like there are two American creeds, self-reliance and marriage, and neither of them is mine. I experience myself as someone formed and sustained by others' love and patience, by student loans and stipends, by the kindness of strangers. Briallen Hopper's Hard to Love honors the categories of loves and relationships beyond marriage, the ones that are often treated as invisible or seen as secondary--friendships, kinship with adult siblings, care teams that form in times of illness, or various alternative family formations. She also values difficult and amorphous loves like loving a challenging job or inanimate objects that can't love you back. She draws from personal experience, sharing stories about her loving but combative family, the fiercely independent Emerson scholar who pushed her away, and the friends who have become her invented or found family; pop culture touchstones like the Women's March, John Green's The Fault in Our Stars, and the timeless series Cheers; and the work of writers like Joan Didion, Gwendolyn Brooks, Flannery O'Connor, and Herman Melville (Moby-Dick like you've never seen it!). Hard to Love pays homage and attention to unlikely friends and lovers both real and fictional. It is a series of love letters to the meaningful, if underappreciated, forms of intimacy and community that are tricky, tangled, and tough, but ultimately sustaining.

Book Overcoming Church Conflict

Download or read book Overcoming Church Conflict written by Vanessa M. Cavett and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overcoming Church Conflict: Confessions of a Church Girl by Vanessa M. Cavett “Conflict tests your ability to endure the race,” says Vanessa M. Cavett in her book Overcoming Church Conflict: Confessions of a Church Girl. The book opens by delving into the history of the Black church in the United States and explores the role of Christianity. She reveals her own history as a Christian while giving testimony of her journey with Christ. Along the way, Cavett encounters the disruptive nature of envy within the church and details dramatic power struggles with deacons, missionaries, and even knife-wielding organists. Cavett keeps readers engaged as she tells the tale of her journey to find the right church that meets her spiritual needs. The book’s theme is overcoming adversity in the church, which is not where most people expect to find it. People look for love and acceptance in the church, but often find conflict. As a result, younger generations today are turning away from the church because it is not perfect and they face rejection. But Jesus said, “It is impossible but that offences will come,” and the church is no exception. Cavett explains that nothing in the earth realm is perfect, but encourages Christians to be fighters and overcome obstacles with the power of God. Cavett experienced church conflict and overcame it by God’s power, becoming a stronger Christian as a result. She encourages readers to understand there is a spiritual and a natural church. The first represents the body of Christ made of believers worldwide and the latter is the place believers gather to encourage each other and worship together. Jesus established the church; therefore, believers must not let the enemy cause them to abandon it because of evil forces placed there to distract them. Believers must remember the higher call of advancing God’s kingdom on earth. And they must be obedient to His word, which instructs them to assemble together in church and work to make it a place where Jesus Christ is exalted and His power is manifest. Cavett recommends this book to all pastors and youth leaders to distribute among youth and use as part of study groups. Overcoming Church Conflict centers around millennials, but is for all Christians, young and old, and especially for those who question the church’s purpose or relevance today. The book is a relatable, witty tale of worship, fellowship, and following God’s call.

Book May I Again Taste the Sweets of Social Religion

Download or read book May I Again Taste the Sweets of Social Religion written by Luke Waite and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-10-04 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For two hundred years, Christians have been inspired by William Carey's commitment to obey the Great Commission. Few know of his devotion to the local church. Yet Carey's ecclesiology warrants our attention. While many works helpfully illuminate aspects of Carey’s ministry, this book pushes past his methods and strategies and examines his ecclesiological faithfulness. By explaining this element of Carey’s doctrine and demonstrating the ways it revealed itself throughout his life, the author argues that Carey’s devotion to the local church was undeniably linked to his God-given success in reaching the lost.

God set the universe in motion with the power of His words and established the law of confession, but many believers have suffered needlessly by misunderstanding the power of their words. Dr. Bill Winston, pastor, Bible teacher, and host of the national television program Believer s Walk of Faith broadcast to over 100 million homes, reveals scriptural examples and vital teaching on the importance of the spoken word. Believers will uncover the enemy s deceptive plan to use their own words against them and what they can do to turn their situation around. 'One of the best things that ever happened to me, my family, and my church, was the revelation of the law of confession - we learned that the moment we win the battle over our words, we win the battle!' Dr. Bill Winston Controlling your words is one of the biggest challenges anyone will face in this life; the Bible reveals that the power of life and death are in the words you say. As you begin to change the words you speak, you will rewrite their future and revolutionize your life.

Book excerpt: An NPR Best Book of the Year • A Buzzfeed Best Book of the Year On Halloween, 1991, a popular high school basketball star ventures into the woods near Battle Creek, Pennsylvania, and disappears. Three days later, he’s found with a bullet in his head and a gun in his hand—a discovery that sends tremors through this conservative community, already unnerved by growing rumors of Satanic worship in the region. In the wake of this incident, bright but lonely Hannah Dexter is befriended by Lacey Champlain, a dark-eyed, Cobain-worshiping bad influence in lip gloss and Doc Martens. The charismatic, seductive Lacey forges a fast, intimate bond with the impressionable Dex, making her over in her own image and unleashing a fierce defiance that neither girl expected. But as Lacey gradually lures Dex away from her safe life into a feverish spiral of obsession, rebellion, and ever greater risk, an unwelcome figure appears on the horizon—and Lacey’s secret history collides with Dex’s worst nightmare. By turns a shocking story of love and violence and an addictive portrait of the intoxication of female friendship, set against the unsettled backdrop of a town gripped by moral panic, Girls on Fire is an unflinching and unforgettable snapshot of girlhood: girls lost and found, girls strong and weak, girls who burn bright and brighter—and some who flicker away.
