Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer scientists often need to learn new programming languages quickly. The best way to prepare for this is to understand the foundational principles that underlie even the most complicated industrial languages. This text for an undergraduate programming languages course distills great languages and their design principles down to easy-to-learn 'bridge' languages implemented by interpreters whose key parts are explained in the text. The book goes deep into the roots of both functional and object-oriented programming, and it shows how types and modules, including generics/polymorphism, contribute to effective programming. The book is not just about programming languages; it is also about programming. Through concepts, examples, and more than 300 practice exercises that exploit the interpreter, students learn not only what programming-language features are but also how to do things with them. Substantial implementation projects include Milner's type inference, both copying and mark-and-sweep garbage collection, and arithmetic on arbitrary-precision integers.

Download or read book Static Analysis written by Agostino Cortesi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-07-31 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Static analysis is increasingly recognized as a fundamental reasearch area aimed at studying and developing tools for high performance implementations and v- i cation systems for all programming language paradigms. The last two decades have witnessed substantial developments in this eld, ranging from theoretical frameworks to design, implementation, and application of analyzers in optim- ing compilers. Since 1994, SAS has been the annual conference and forum for researchers in all aspects of static analysis. This volume contains the proceedings of the 6th International Symposium on Static Analysis (SAS’99) which was held in Venice, Italy, on 22{24 September 1999. The previous SAS conferences were held in Namur (Belgium), Glasgow (UK), Aachen (Germany), Paris (France), and Pisa (Italy). The program committee selected 18 papers out of 42 submissions on the basis of at least three reviews. The resulting volume o ers to the reader a complete landscape of the research in this area. The papers contribute to the following topics: foundations of static analysis, abstract domain design, and applications of static analysis to di erent programming paradigms (concurrent, synchronous, imperative, object oriented, logical, and functional). In particular, several papers use static analysis for obtaining state space reduction in concurrent systems. New application elds are also addressed, such as the problems of security and secrecy.

Download or read book Intelligent Systems written by L.S. Sterling and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in honour of the 70th birthday of Yoh-Han Pao, George S. Dively Dis tinguished Professor of Engineering at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, this festschrift embraces a remarkably diverse set of topics. Drawing from the fields of pattern recognition, engineering, artificial intelligence and artificial neural systems, it is a fitting testament to the extraordinary breadth of his professional in terests both in foundational research into the new technology of Intelligent Systems and ill the application of that evolving technology to the solution of hard engineering problems. In common with many scientists who build their reputations in one field before devoting their considerable energies and talents to another one, by 1972, the year in which I met him for the first time, Yoh-Han had made significant contributions to laser technology, in particular to the development of the highly accurate and stable lasers required for holographic recording purposes. In conventional holography, the information stored in a hologram produces a virtual image of the object charac terised by it. However, Yoh-Han became fascinated by the possiblity of driving the process hackwards, of using the hologram as an associative memory device enabling previously stored information to be retrieved on the basis of partial cues. It was this burgeoning interest which shaped his career for more than twenty years. Just prior to 1972, my colleagues Professor Christopher Longuet-Higgins and Dr.
