Book The Engineer of 2020

    Book Details:
  • Author : National Academy of Engineering
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 2004-05-14
  • ISBN : 030913336X
  • Pages : 118 pages

Download or read book The Engineer of 2020 written by National Academy of Engineering and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-05-14 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To enhance the nation's economic productivity and improve the quality of life worldwide, engineering education in the United States must anticipate and adapt to the dramatic changes of engineering practice. The Engineer of 2020 urges the engineering profession to recognize what engineers can build for the future through a wide range of leadership roles in industry, government, and academia-not just through technical jobs. Engineering schools should attract the best and brightest students and be open to new teaching and training approaches. With the appropriate education and training, the engineer of the future will be called upon to become a leader not only in business but also in nonprofit and government sectors. The book finds that the next several decades will offer more opportunities for engineers, with exciting possibilities expected from nanotechnology, information technology, and bioengineering. Other engineering applications, such as transgenic food, technologies that affect personal privacy, and nuclear technologies, raise complex social and ethical challenges. Future engineers must be prepared to help the public consider and resolve these dilemmas along with challenges that will arise from new global competition, requiring thoughtful and concerted action if engineering in the United States is to retain its vibrancy and strength.

Book Educating the Engineer of 2020

Download or read book Educating the Engineer of 2020 written by National Academy of Engineering and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2005-10-06 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Educating the Engineer of 2020 is grounded by the observations, questions, and conclusions presented in the best-selling book The Engineer of 2020: Visions of Engineering in the New Century. This new book offers recommendations on how to enrich and broaden engineering education so graduates are better prepared to work in a constantly changing global economy. It notes the importance of improving recruitment and retention of students and making the learning experience more meaningful to them. It also discusses the value of considering changes in engineering education in the broader context of enhancing the status of the engineering profession and improving the public understanding of engineering. Although certain basics of engineering will not change in the future, the explosion of knowledge, the global economy, and the way engineers work will reflect an ongoing evolution. If the United States is to maintain its economic leadership and be able to sustain its share of high-technology jobs, it must prepare for this wave of change.

Book Nanotechnology for Chemical Engineers

Download or read book Nanotechnology for Chemical Engineers written by Said Salaheldeen Elnashaie and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book describes the basic principles of transforming nano-technology into nano-engineering with a particular focus on chemical engineering fundamentals. This book provides vital information about differences between descriptive technology and quantitative engineering for students as well as working professionals in various fields of nanotechnology. Besides chemical engineering principles, the fundamentals of nanotechnology are also covered along with detailed explanation of several specific nanoscale processes from chemical engineering point of view. This information is presented in form of practical examples and case studies that help the engineers and researchers to integrate the processes which can meet the commercial production. It is worth mentioning here that, the main challenge in nanostructure and nanodevices production is nowadays related to the economic point of view. The uniqueness of this book is a balance between important insights into the synthetic methods of nano-structures and nanomaterials and their applications with chemical engineering rules that educates the readers about nanosclale process design, simulation, modelling and optimization. Briefly, the book takes the readers through a journey from fundamentals to frontiers of engineering of nanoscale processes and informs them about industrial perspective research challenges, opportunities and synergism in chemical Engineering and nanotechnology. Utilising this information the readers can make informed decisions on their career and business.

Book Targeted Molecular Imaging in Oncology

Download or read book Targeted Molecular Imaging in Oncology written by E. Edmund Kim and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer cells dedifferentiate with repect to cell function; their vascularity is more leaky, but perfusion is heterogenerously reduced, and interstitial fluid pressure is high, severely retarding delivery of agents from the blood. Targeted imaging is designed to produce a detectable difference between tissue that is visualized with single photon and positron emission tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, or ultrasonography. This book uniquely reports strategies for the application of molecular targeted imaging agents such as antibodies, peptides, receptors and contrast agents in the biologic grading of tumors, differential diagnosis of tumors, prediction of therapeutic response and monitoring tumor response to treatment. This book also describes updated information about the imaging of tumor angiogenesis, hypoxia, apoptosis and gene delivery as well as expression in the understanding and utility of tumor molecular biology for better cancer management.

Book Origin and Mechanisms of Hallucinations

Download or read book Origin and Mechanisms of Hallucinations written by Wolfram Keup and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hallucinations, a natural phenomenon as old as mankind, have a surprisingly wide range. They appear under the most diversified conditions, in the "normal" psyche as well as in severe chronic mental derangement. As a symptom, hallucinations are a potential part of a variety of pathological conditions in almost all kinds of psychotic behavior. In addition, lately, various psychological and sociological circumstances seem to favor widespread use and abuse of hallucinogens, substances able to produce hallucinations in the normal brain. They not rarely lead to serious psychopatho logy such as toxic, and mobilized or aggravated endogenous psycho ses. While such development adds to our scientific knowledge, it also contributes to our current social troubles. Neurologists and neuro-surgeons, psychiatrists, psychologists and other specialized researchers constantly have been dealing with the phenomenon, its roots and branches, and yet, its primary mechanisms are largely un known. However, investigators of hallucinations now seem to enter common ground on which meaningful discussions and joint approaches become feasible and more promising. We have come a long way from the Latin term "hallucinari", meaning to talk nonsense, to be absent-minded, to the modern con cept of "hallucinations". While the Latin word was descriptive of what may be due to hallucinations, the modern concept defines hal lucinations as subjective experiences that are consequences of men tal processes, sometimes fulfilling a purpose in the individual's mental life.
