Download or read book The Crafting of the Postwar Peace Treaty with Japan 1945 1951 written by Seung Mo Kang and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-20 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how the Treaty of Peace with Japan, a momentous agreement that delineated postwar order in the Pacific, was negotiated between Japan and 48 other nations in 1951. Even though the treaty was created to legally end the state of war between Japan and its Pacific War enemies, many other considerations - some of which had hardly anything to do with the Pacific War - were involved. The US-Soviet rivalry was the most representative, but this was not the only factor. For instance, the decision to invite Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam as signatories was determined based on French colonial interests, Indochinese yearning for independence and the need for French contribution in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Similarly, German reparations settlements after the First and Second World Wars impacted Japanese reparations settlement. Meanwhile, the commercial terms of the treaty were informed by the Great Depression and its legacies. This book addresses these aspects of the peace treaty that are hitherto not sufficiently elaborated upon in existing studies. Highlighting the importance of the treaty for shaping postwar East Asia and international relations in the region to the present day, this book will be a valuable resource for students and scholars of post-war Japan, International relations, and the Cold War.

This book was released on 1987-09-17 with total page 858 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Pulitzer Prize With deft portraits of many world figures, Dean Acheson analyzes the processes of policy making, the necessity for decision, and the role of power and initiative in matters of state. Acheson (1893–1971) was not only present at the creation of the postwar world, he was one of its chief architects. He joined the Department of State in 1941 as Assistant Secretary of State for Economic Affairs and, with brief intermissions, was continuously involved until 1953, when he left office as Secretary of State at the end of the Truman years. Throughout that time Acheson's was one of the most influential minds and strongest wills at work. It was a period that included World War II, the reconstruction of Europe, the Korean War, the development of nuclear power, the formation of the United Nations and NATO. It involved him at close quarters with a cast that starred Truman, Roosevelt, Churchill, de Gaulle, Marshall, MacArthur, Eisenhower, Attlee, Eden Bevin, Schuman, Dulles, de Gasperi, Adenauer, Yoshida, Vishinsky, and Molotov.

Download or read book The Japanese Empire Disaster written by Jean Sénat Fleury and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2021-01-22 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book demonstrates that, even if during the first period of the Shwa era (1931–1945) the real driving force to war was the Japanese military, Hirohito, as supreme commander, gave full support to the army. On multiple occasions, as an emperor, he sanctioned many government policies. Accordingly, he was responsible for the war and for the atrocities that the Japanese troops committed in Asia during the Pacific War. Japan’s Empire Disaster is a book of information and training; a reference document that should be read as an educational tool on the history of the modernization of Japan and the war launched by Emperor Meiji and Hirohito to build Japan Empire in the Pacific and East Asia. The book shares the view of the author on Hirohito’s responsibility on the events that marked Japan’s entry into the war that began when Japanese troops invaded Manchuria on September 19, 1931, and culminated with Japan’s surprise attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, on December 7, 1941.
