Book CONDUIT A New Multidisciplinary Integration Environment for Flight Control Development

Download or read book CONDUIT A New Multidisciplinary Integration Environment for Flight Control Development written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A state-of-the-art computational facility for aircraft flight control design, evaluation, and integration called CONDUIT (Control Designer's Unified Interface) has been developed. This paper describes the CONDUIT tool and case study applications to complex rotary- and fixed- wing fly-by-wire flight control problems. Control system analysis and design optimization methods are presented, including definition of design specifications and system models within CONDUIT, and the multi-objective function optimization (CONSOL-OPTCAD) used to tune the selected design parameters. Design examples are based on flight test programs for which extensive data are available for validation. CONDUIT is used to analyze baseline control laws against pertinent military handling qualities and control system specifications. In both case studies, CONDUIT successfully exploits trade-offs between forward loop and feedback dynamics to significantly improve the expected handling qualities and minimize the required actuator authority. The CONDUIT system provides a new environment for integrated control system analysis and design, and has potential for significantly reducing the time and cost of control system flight test optimization.

Download or read book An Overview of Flight Test Results for a Formation Flight Autopilot written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first flight test phase of the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center Autonomous Formation Flight project has successfully demonstrated precision autonomous station-keeping of an F/A-18 research airplane with a second F/A-18 airplane. Blended inertial navigation system (INS) and global positioning system (GPS) measurements have been communicated across an air-to-air telemetry link and used to compute relative-position estimates. A precision research formation autopilot onboard the trailing airplane controls lateral and vertical spacing while the leading airplane operates under production autopilot control. Four research autopilot gain sets have been designed and flight-tested, and each exceeds the project design requirement of steady-state tracking accuracy within 1 standard deviation of 10 ft.

Book Helicopter Flight Dynamics

Download or read book Helicopter Flight Dynamics written by Gareth D. Padfield and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-11-19 with total page 858 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book The behaviour of helicopters and tiltrotor aircraft is so complex that understanding the physical mechanisms at work in trim, stability and response, and thus the prediction of Flying Qualities, requires a framework of analytical and numerical modelling and simulation. Good Flying Qualities are vital for ensuring that mission performance is achievable with safety and, in the first and second editions of Helicopter Flight Dynamics, a comprehensive treatment of design criteria was presented, relating to both normal and degraded Flying Qualities. Fully embracing the consequences of Degraded Flying Qualities during the design phase will contribute positively to safety. In this third edition, two new Chapters are included. Chapter 9 takes the reader on a journey from the origins of the story of Flying Qualities, tracing key contributions to the developing maturity and to the current position. Chapter 10 provides a comprehensive treatment of the Flight Dynamics of tiltrotor aircraft; informed by research activities and the limited data on operational aircraft. Many of the unique behavioural characteristics of tiltrotors are revealed for the first time in this book. The accurate prediction and assessment of Flying Qualities draws on the modelling and simulation discipline on the one hand and testing practice on the other. Checking predictions in flight requires clearly defined mission tasks, derived from realistic performance requirements. High fidelity simulations also form the basis for the design of stability and control augmentation systems, essential for conferring Level 1 Flying Qualities. The integrated description of flight dynamic modelling, simulation and flying qualities of rotorcraft forms the subject of this book, which will be of interest to engineers practising and honing their skills in research laboratories, academia and manufacturing industries, test pilots and flight test engineers, and as a reference for graduate and postgraduate students in aerospace engineering.

Book Flight Simulation Within the Frame of Multidisciplinary Optimization of Large Flexible Aircraft

Download or read book Flight Simulation Within the Frame of Multidisciplinary Optimization of Large Flexible Aircraft written by Armin Rommel and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The disciplines flight mechanics I flight control and structural dynamics have to work closely together when large flexible aircraft, such as A340-600 and A3XX, are designed. The flight-control system has to be designed under the constraint that structural oscillation resonances or unacceptable levels of structural loads have to be avoided. Especially the integration of flight control and structural control requires multidisciplinary cooperation. In the potential conflict between handling qualities and minimal structural loads requirements the flight-control law parameters have to be optimized. This paper describes enhancements of real-time flight simulation in order to integrate the pilot into the control loop especially with respect to the effects of cockpit accelerations. The enhancements cover the coupling of rigid body motion and flexible modes in order to analyze the effects of neighboring frequencies, as well as the inclusion of simplified loads computation within the real-time simulation environment. Moreover, a cost-effective way of simulation-model development is presented. This covers model development and testing/validation on a fixed-base engineering flight simulator followed by a proven model transfer onto a six degrees of freedom motion simulator where intensive pilot-in-the-loop investigations can be carried out.

Book An Integrated Approach to Flight Control System Design

Download or read book An Integrated Approach to Flight Control System Design written by Christopher Simon Beaverstock and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A closely integrated Flight Control System (FCS) design is fundamental to the successful develop- ment of modern aircraft. The FCS must provide adequate control authority to the pilot operator, along with a robust systems design that provides sufficient reliability and performance to ensure ad- equate handling qualities throughout the operational flight envelope. Using feedback controllers, the static and dynamic characteristics can be augmented, ultimately to improve the performance. In- cluding feedback control into the conceptual design process can in many cases improve not only the static and dynamic performance, but the operational efficiency. Essentially, the stability requirements are relaxed, where the additional parameters supplied by the controller are used to recover the lost performance. Furthermore, this is bounded by the performance of the command-actuation system. Parameters such as rate and maximum actuation output limit the systems designs performance, as well as the system dynamics which modifies the response. This thesis considers the task of integrating classical control and systems design under a single design framework. It is shown that by expanding the design space parameters, the overall aircraft perfor- mance and efficiency can be improved. The intended application of these methods is for integration into the conceptual design phase, where commitment of resources is normally at its greatest. Prin- ciples of this thesis are embodied in the FCS design environment Flight Control Systems Designer Toolkit (FCSDT), a sub-component of the Computerised Environment for Aircraft Synthesis and In- tegrated Optirnisation Methods (CEASIOM) software framework developed by Simulation of aircraft Stability And Control (SimSAC), an European Union (EU) funded Framework 6 Program, of which the author was a part of the development team. It is hypothesised that the FCS topology, systems architecture and control design are intrinsically linked, and that modifying these concurrently can lead to an improved design. This is demon- strated using data for a Boeing 747-100 published by National Aeronautics and Space Adminis- tration (NASA), selected due to the wealth of data and information available. Furthermore, with multiply-redundant surfaces and varying response and control power characteristics, provides a non- trivial example for FCS design. The NASA model was used to investigate static and dynamic per- formance across the operational ftight envelope. FCSDT was then used to explore the interaction between the topology and systems design whilst integrating feedback control. Results show the pos- sible performance benefits of. and the system limitations on. the control system design.

Book In Flight Simulators and Fly by Wire Light Demonstrators

Download or read book In Flight Simulators and Fly by Wire Light Demonstrators written by Peter G. Hamel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-15 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers the first complete account of more than sixty years of international research on In-Flight Simulation and related development of electronic and electro-optic flight control system technologies (“Fly-by-Wire” and “Fly-by-Light”). They have provided a versatile and experimental procedure that is of particular importance for verification, optimization, and evaluation of flying qualities and flight safety of manned or unmanned aircraft systems. Extensive coverage is given in the book to both fundamental information related to flight testing and state-of-the-art advances in the design and implementation of electronic and electro-optic flight control systems, which have made In-Flight Simulation possible. Written by experts, the respective chapters clearly show the interdependence between various aeronautical disciplines and in-flight simulation methods. Taken together, they form a truly multidisciplinary book that addresses the needs of not just flight test engi neers, but also other aeronautical scientists, engineers and project managers and historians as well. Students with a general interest in aeronautics as well as researchers in countries with growing aeronautical ambitions will also find the book useful. The omission of mathematical equations and in-depth theoretical discussions in favor of fresh discussions on innovative experiments, together with the inclusion of anecdotes and fascinating photos, make this book not only an enjoyable read, but also an important incentive to future research. The book, translated from the German by Ravindra Jategaonkar, is an extended and revised English edition of the book Fliegende Simulatoren und Technologieträger , edited by Peter Hamel and published by Appelhans in 2014.
