Alan Radley, Emeritus Professor of Social Psychology, Loughborough University Medicine as Culture introduces students to a broad range of cross-disciplinary theoretical perspectives, using examples that emphasize bodies and visual images. Lupton′s core contrast between lay perspectives on illness and medical power is a useful beginning point for courses teaching health and illness from a socio-cultural perspective. Arthur Frank, Department of Sociology, University of Calgary Medicine as Culture is unlike any other sociological text on health and medicine. It combines perspectives drawn from a wide variety of disciplines including sociology, anthropology, social history, cultural geography, and media and cultural studies. The book explores the ways in which medicine and health care are sociocultural constructions, ranging from popular media and elite cultural representations of illness to the power dynamics of the doctor-patient relationship. The Third Edition has been updated to cover new areas of interest, including: - studies of space and place in relation to the body - actor-network theory as it is applied in research related to medicine - The internet and social media and how they contribute to lay health knowledge and patient support - complementary and alternative medicine - obesity and fat politics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on an advanced, new scientific approach to studying the consciousness, soul, spirit, as proposed by renowned Brazilian consciousness researcher, Dr. Waldo Vieira, this book provides a comprehensive understanding of the reality of the human condition beyond the physical body, offering readers a profound opportunity to increase their self-awareness, self-confidence, balance and maturity, and to take control of their experience of life. In this book, conscientiology and projectiology, the two new sciences proposed by Vieira, are explained in layman?s terms. Conscientiology is the science that studies the consciousness, investigating all of its attributes, properties, characteristics, bodies, lives and phenomena. The book examines three attributes of the consciousness; that it is multidimensional, multiexistential, i.e. it reincarnates, and that it evolves. Projectiology is the study of the projection of the consciousness or out-of-body experience commonly known as OBE

Book The Happy Body

    Book Details:
  • Author : Aniela & Jerzy Gregorek
  • Publisher : The Happy Body Press

  • ISBN : 0982403828
  • Pages : 292 pages

Download or read book The Happy Body written by Aniela & Jerzy Gregorek and published by The Happy Body Press. This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Becoming lean and fit is not a matter of training for a few weeks, like Rocky, to become a world champion. That only happens in Hollywood movies that portray professional athletes exercising for hours every day until they are exhausted. Real athletes never do that. They train only to the point that they can recover for the next day s training. Their progress comes in small increments, not heroic triumphs. Unfortunately, movies have persuaded people that they can become lean and fit virtually overnight. Even the weight loss and fitness industry bought into this distortion and began pushing people to become like Rocky. When that approach failed, because people were injuring themselves or burning out or jumping from one program to another, trainers began to entertain their clients instead of finding solutions to their problems. If you want to become truly lean and fit, you must work at it like an athlete, following a structured routine and that is easier and more pleasant than you may expect. The principles that work for athletes also work for ordinary people of all ages. Athletes, of course, have coaches. The Happy Body program, on the other hand, will teach you everything you need to know to be your own coach. This innovative program establishes, for the first time, exact scientific and testable methods and goals to engineer your own weight loss and fitness within precise time periods. That empowers you to self-correct your progress at every step. The Happy Body is a total health program, not just an exercise or diet plan. It will teach you to safely lose 1.0 to 2.5 pounds every week, and keep them off, without getting stuck at plateaus. You will have full control over the process, right down to the ounce. In addition to teaching you how to lose weight, the program will also help you to restore the flexibility and posture you had as a young child, and to be leaner, stronger, and faster than you have ever been. In essence, The Happy Body program will not only make you as youthful as you were at twenty, but twenty as you would have been if you had followed the program at that age.

Book excerpt: Forget settling for the so-called "golden" years. Instead, join the platinum club! Membership is open to anyone, as long as you're willing to take care of your body and your health as you age and as you experience some of the best years of your life. Physique After 50 argues that physique training doesn’t have to end the moment you turn fifty. Aging is an important part of life, and this is the prime of your life. At the same time, as you age there are real physical and hormonal changes going on in your body. Being fifty is not the same as forty, so of course your exercise needs to account for this. Most younger fitness trainers out there just can’t appreciate what these aging-related changes mean for you and your training. Physique After 50 offers real-world, practical training advice from Coach Scott Abel. Scott himself is in his mid-fifties, and has experienced these aging-related changes firsthand, both with himself and with his one-on-one coaching clients. By using smart training strategies (and by leaving your ego at the door) you can look and feel great during what can be some of the most fulfilling decades of your life. You can feel physically younger even as you embrace the wisdom that comes with age. Physique After 50 book tells you how to do exactly that. Physique After 50 includes: ● How aging affects your fitness and training, and what to do about it. ● Three different workout programs geared specifically for the "Physique After 50" demographic. ● You can choose which of the three programs is right for you depending on whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced trainee. (There is also advice on progressing from one program to the next.) ● Bodypart-specific training “tweaks” to avoid injuries (especially those "overuse" injuries that are often related to age). ● How to balance rest and recovery with training. ● “Forget About It” — what forms of training to ignore or simply stop using entirely as you age. ● What elements of the warmup are more important (and how most people do these things wrong). ● The hormonal realities of aging (for both men and women), and what that means for you and your training. Book Body Matters

    Book Details:
  • Author : James Aho
  • Publisher : Lexington Books
  • Release : 2008-06-19
  • ISBN : 0739138219
  • Pages : 207 pages

Download or read book Body Matters written by James Aho and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2008-06-19 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the core principle of phenomenology as a return 'to the things themselves,' Body Matters attends to the phenomena of bodily afflictions and examines them from three different standpoints: from society in general that interprets them as 'sicknesses,' from the medical professions that interpret them as 'diseases,' and from the patients themselves who interpret them as 'illnesses.' By drawing on a crucial distinction in German phenomenology between two senses of the body_the quantifiable, material body (Ksrper) and the lived-body(Leib)_the authors explore the ways in which sickness, disease, and illness are socially and historically experienced and constructed. To make their case, they draw on examples from a multiplicity of disciplines and cultures as well as a number of cases from Euro-American history. The intent is to unsettle taken-for-granted assumptions that readers may have about body troubles. These are assumptions widely held as well by medical and allied health professionals, in addition to many sociologists and philosophers of health and illness. To this end, Body Matters does not simply deconstruct prejudices of mainstream biomedicine; it also constructively envisions more humane and artful forms of therapy.

Download or read book PRESENTATIONS Causes Conditions and Remedies of Depression 4th Body Mind and Life Conference 12 14 October 2016 Men Tsee Khang written by Body, Mind and Life Department and published by Mentseekhang Documentation & Publication. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS THE 14TH DALAI LAMA Recently, we conducted a research on a group of meditators, to study the changes in their body elements. The study was done in collaboration with American scientists, and it was discovered that after about three weeks of practicing meditation, their blood pressure had decreased, mind became clearer and calmer and it further reduced stress. There are many aspects of brain that are new to us and are yet to be explored. It is in fact very important to practice meditation to literally change our brain. We must be able to prove scientifically that love and compassion are necessities to maintain physical and mental wellbeing at both individual and social level. Modern science deals mainly with brain, leaving aside the aspect of ‘mind’. It is important to make efforts towards cultivation of moral ethics that is directly associated with mental aspect. In the ancient times, there was no connection between spirituality and science. Now we are all aware of the significance of the mental aspect, and we need to analyze and conduct scientific studies on the subject of consciousness. In Tibetan Monastic communities, there have been cases where certain realized practitioners were clinically declared dead but their bodies remained fresh for several days without any decomposition. There was a case in which the body of a monk who was declared brain dead not only remained fresh but also gained strength a couple of days after death. These cases need to be studied thoroughly, and in the course of analysis, the findings of the investigation and research as the fundamental principle must be embraced. Above is an excerpt from His Holiness’s address at the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Science in the capital of Uttar Pradesh state on the occasion of the 58th annual conference of the Neurological Society of India. His Holiness spoke on “Brain science and ancient Indian Buddhist thought”.

Book Medical Humanism Chronic Illness and the Body in Pain

Download or read book Medical Humanism Chronic Illness and the Body in Pain written by Vinita Agarwal and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even as life expectancies increase, increasing numbers of people are living with chronic illness and pain than ever before. Long-term self-management of chronic conditions involves negotiating the intersections of personal life choices, community and workplace structures, and family roles. Medical Humanism, Chronic Illness, and the Body in Pain: An Ecology of Wholeness proposes an ecological model of wholeness, which envisions wholeness in the dialogic engagement of the philosophical orientations of the biomedical and traditional medical systems. Vinita Agarwal proposes an integrative premise of being whole through revising the fundamental definitions of humanism, rethinking the self/body/environment, and thereby recognizing alternative ways of organizing knowledge and human experience as this model pushes the intersections of patient-centered care and sustainable health ethics. It is in the spaces of such intersections, Agarwal argues, that we accomplish healing as an integrative relationship of the individual with the multiple cultural logics underlying chronic conditions and the competing medical worldviews of our contemporary landscape. Scholars of communication, health, and medical humanities, along with practitioners working with patients who have chronic conditions, will find this book particularly useful.
