Book Concrete in the Country Classic Reprint

Download or read book Concrete in the Country Classic Reprint written by Portland Cement Association Chicago and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-16 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concrete in the Country With little help other than looking and listening. The farmer grasped the idea of a concrete walk, and being a natural inventor and jack-of-all-trades. Improved on the method by adding a small curb next to his flower bed to keep the dirt from washing on the white walk. This walk was a blessing to the boy - all the time formerly given to scrubbing and weeding the old brick walk could now be devoted to fishing. The yard walk was extended to the barns and outlying buildings. Wading through seas of mud and resulting tracked-up kitchen floors became a thing of the past. By simply increasing the width of the walk, a cellar floor was provided and the farmer had a dry cellar. This was so clean and so odorless that he considered such a floor fit for that most immaculate of all places - the milk house. Concrete cellar hatchway and steps, safe under the heaviest barrel of vinegar. And water-tight, were made in a manner similar to walks. Brick work had long been laid up in a mixture of Portland cement and sand. As this kept the water out, the farmer reasoned that it would keep the water in. And he started to build cistern floors, walls and cover of Portland cement concrete at one-third to one-half the cost of the old brick cistern. After a little more observation. He quit digging deep cistern-pits, with the necessary annoyance of thawing out frozen pumps and carrying water - he built a concrete cistern on top of the ground and made the pumping and carrying of the water a mere matter of turning a faucet in the kitchen and the bath room. Several years ago corn was so cheap that in some sections it was burned for fuel instead of coal. No consideration was then given to the bushels wasted in muddy feed lots. If the mud became too deep, the feeding was transferred to the blue grass pasture. To be sure. As the sod wore out, the feeding-place had to be changed; but somebody had advanced the idea that this particular method of feeding was good for the soil. Many farmers had tried wooden feeding floors and had found them a paying proposition as far as the saving of feed was concerned. In the general health of the animal, and in the shortened time of fattening. But two great drawbacks were the rats that infested them and the constant need of re pairs. In concrete the thoughtful farmer saw the possibilities of an ideal floor - an easily cleaned, rat-proof, disease-proof surface Upon which his hogs, sheep, cattle and poultry might consume the feed even to the smallest particle. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concrete for Town and Country: A Service Book of Information for Those Interested in Permanent Improvement in Town and Country Part one is a collection of photographs of actual uses of concrete. It shows the possibilities of concrete in town and country. Part two supplies practical information on the uses of concrete. By details and suggestion it gives the prospective builder a clear conception of good practice. Included with these details are tables which show the materials necessary. Quantity of cement is often referred to in barrels. As four sacks make one barrel, these two designations should not be confused. Five barrels of cement equal twenty sacks. Sand and stone are usually sold by the ton. The references are in cubic yards due to the variation in weights of different aggregates. Part three explains the fundamental principles of concrete and the proper use of cement. Tables have been included for convenience and the spirit of lehigh service has been incorporated wit'h the idea of guiding to best results the users of lehigh - the National Cement. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concrete Highways With the fall of the Roman Empire came a decline in road construe tion and for several centuries no further attempt was made to improve highways. The revival of paving came in the building of streets in the larger cities. This was followed by the improvement of the through routes between the centers of population. It was not until the latter part of the 18th century and the early part Of the lgth, that a truly scientific attempt was made at road build ing. The methods employed during that period are in use today, in slightly modified form, in our country and village roads. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concrete Construction for Rural Communities During the Middle Ages the use of concrete was continued to some extent, but no great advance was made. In the eighteenth century it was discovered that the clay contained in certain limes conferred on them the property of setting, or hardening, under water, and the process of making natural cement was developed. In the last century the use of concrete was greatly stimulated by the invention of Portland cement, by the discovery of de posits of rock suitable for making natural cement, and by the development of machinery which made it possible to produce these cements cheaply. Book Concrete Construction Classic Reprint

Download or read book Concrete Construction Classic Reprint written by Engineering Company of America and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-03 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concrete Construction The proof which is the most convincing was that afforded by the recent Baltimore fire. In that great con flagration, every known type of construction was subjected to the flames. After the fire, engineers came from all over the country to observe what type of construction had best withstood the flames. The opinion of these experts was strikingly unanimous and decisive to the effect that. Concrete had stood up better than the steel frames with terra-cotta protection and, of course, better than brick and stone. In fact the two buildings in the district constructed of concrete (the United States Fidelity 85 Guaranty Building and the International Trust Company Building) stand like monu mentsto the material of which they are constructed while all around them lie shapeless heaps of broken brick, stone, and hollow tile, as well as columns and beams of structural steel distorted into fanciful shapes by the action of the fire. Book Concrete Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concrete In the nineteenth (1909) edition, 100th thousand, of our Civil Engineer's pocket-book, the most notable of the new features is the series of articles on Concrete (plain and reinforced), including Cement, Sand and Mortar. Practically all of this matter (occupy ing about 200 pages), altho by no means original, is entirely new, so far as our publications are concerned. In compiling it, our object has been to present, in convenient and condensed form, the essentials of existing knowledge and opinion in regard to these subjects. Special attention has therefore been given to the rules and results of modern practice in concrete construction; a feature which is re ected thruout the text and especially in the Selected Results of Experiment and Practice, pp 1135, etc., and in the Digest of Specifications, pp 1184, etc. These contain, we believe, a more complete and more conveniently classified presentation of modern practice in concrete than is to be found elsewhere in equal space. To attain this, great care has been taken so to arrange the material as to give maximum density in the resulting text, and maximum convenience for reference. In the selection of results of experiment and practice, we have had in mind not only the weight and standing of the authorities quoted, but also the importance of covering, as nearly as possible, the entire field of practice, with its very numerous and diversified problems. For reasons explained on p 1140, it was found impracticable to arrange these results in satisfactory logical order, and they are therefore furnished with a special and very complete table of contents, or Directory, pp 1135 - 1139, arranged in practically the same order as are the articles on cement, etc., pp 930, etc., and on concrete, etc., pp 1084 - 1134. It is believed that, in connection with this Directory, the selected results will be found a very useful feature. Book Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Classic Reprint

Download or read book Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Classic Reprint written by German Woodhead and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concrete Construction About the Home and on the Farm The development of the American Portland Cement industry during the past decade has been one of the marvels of the age, and while Portland Cement Concrete has come to be recognized as the ideal building material for heavy work, comparatively little attention has been given to its use in the smaller f. Construction about the home and on the farm. That active interest, however, is taken in this important subject by the suburbanite, the villager, and the farmer, is evidenced by the large number of letters of inquiry received by the agricultural and technical journals. Download or read book Culturgeschichtliche Novellen written by W. H. Riehl and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Culturgeschichtliche Novellen It is as in some sort an introduction to such a study of German as I have endeavoured to indicate, so far as this is possible under the limitations of a commentary on a given text, that the present volume has been prepared. The notes are numerous and copious, but I trust they will commend themselves as not of the kind that paralyse the student's own mental activity by superseding the necessity for it; but rather as stimulating it by presenting suitable material in a workable form, and furnishing guidance in such a way as to lead to future independence. The material has of course been supplied in the first place by the text itself. This has been to a small extent supplemented, but chiefly elucidated and illustrated, by matter drawn from sources many of them inaccessible to the English reader. A not inconsiderable element may lay some claim to origi nality, and perhaps this will be the most valuable part of the book to the real student, because treating from the objective standpoint of the foreigner, specially of the Englishman, matters of idiomatic difficulty upon which only scattered hints are to be found in sources English or German. I may refer particularly to the notes on the particles, on the exact force, as felt in the original, of words like erst, z'ibrzlgms, vol lends, &c., and of certain familiar but peculiar modes of con ception and expression which are too completely ingrained in the consciousness of a native for him easily to make them the objects of analysis or of explanation to others.
