Download or read book Vatican II written by Matthew L Lamb and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-04-30 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1962 to 1965, in perhaps the most important religious event of the twentieth century, the Second Vatican Council met to plot a course for the future of the Roman Catholic Church. After thousands of speeches, resolutions, and votes, the Council issued sixteen official documents on topics ranging from divine revelation to relations with non-Christians. In many ways, though, the real challenges began after the council was over and Catholics began to argue over the interpretation of the documents. Many analysts perceived the Council's far-reaching changes as breaks with Church tradition, and soon this became the dominant bias in the American and other media, which lacked the theological background to approach the documents on their own terms. In Vatican II: Renewal Within Tradition, an international team of theologians offers a different reading of the documents from Vatican II. The Council was indeed putting forth a vision for the future of the Church, but that vision was grounded in two millennia of tradition. Taken together, these essays demonstrate that Vatican II's documents are a development from an established antecedent in the Roman Catholic Church. Each chapter contextualizes Vatican II teachings within that rich tradition. The resulting book is an indispensable and accessible companion to the Council's developments, one that focuses on theology and transcends the mass-media storyline of "liberal" versus "conservative."
Download or read book The Reception of Vatican II written by Matthew L. Lamb and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sequel to Vatican II: Renewal within Tradition (OUP 2008), The Reception of Vatican II shows how the Council has been received and interpreted over the course of the more than fifty years since it concluded. The meaning of the Second Vatican Council has been fiercely contested since before it was even over, and since its completion has seen a battle for the soul of the Church waged through the interpretation of Council documents. Each essay in this volume looks at how one of those documents has been interpreted in the post-Vatican II era and points the way forward for its future reception.
Download or read book Vessel of Honor The Virgin Birth and the Ecclesiology of Vatican II written by Brian A. Graebe and published by Emmaus Academic. This book was released on 2021-08-18 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The traditional claim that Mary remained a virgin during the very act of giving birth to Jesus is one of the least known and least understood aspects of Marian doctrine today. Has the contemporary Church retreated from this claim? In Vessel of Honor, Fr. Brian Graebe provides a solid introduction to the historical development of the doctrine and its reception in modern Catholic theology. He shows that, far from being responsible for its contemporary occlusion, the Second Vatican Council did much to reaffirm the traditional understanding of Mary’s perpetual virginity against its radical reinterpretation in the mid-twentieth century. Fr. Graebe demonstrates that the Council’s underappreciated work on Mary’s perpetual virginity must be seen as part of the legacy of Vatican II. Perhaps the most significant and timely contribution of this book is its illumination of the Council’s revival of the patristic association of Mary with the Church. At a time when many claim Vatican II weakened the Church’s commitment to Sacred Tradition, Vessel of Honor amplifies the Council’s clarion call to the Church to receive and preserve God’s revelation with virginal fidelity. Mary’s physical intactness is an icon of the deposit of faith. Vessel of Honor is an important book both for modern Mariology and for the proper reception of the Second Vatican Council.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mariology of the 20th century got a decisive stimulus by the movement for the dogmatic definition of Mary’s social function as “Mediatrix of all Graces.” Gloria Falcão Dodd gives a synthetic, historical overview of the development from 1896 until the proclamation of the Marian chapter of “Lumen gentium” in 1964. She also analyzes the theological arguments for and against the dogmatic definition. Her very useful work is indispensable for anyone who wants to receive the most recent basic information about the most disputed topic of modern Mariology. - Rev. Dr. Manfred Hauke

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book Anscar Chupungco carries forward the work begun in 'Cultural Adaptation of the Liturgy'. Now, more than forty years after the Council, the first stage of the liturgical renewal is complete: the Roman liturgy has been restored to its classical shape. But the challenge of the second stage lies before us: the adaptation of the liturgy to various cultures and traditions. This, the unfinished agenda of the Council, is the task of local churches. Chupungco here calls them to take up that task, Òto be faithful to sound tradition and to foster legitimate progress at the same time . . . an art requiring expertise in the science of liturgy, the virtue of flexibility, and often a great faith in the wisdom of the Church. After reviewing the mandate of the Council, the author examines the future of the liturgy in three chapters: the future shape of the eucharistic celebration, the future shape of sacramental celebrations, and the future shape of the liturgical year. This hopeful and stimulating book will be of great assistance not only to teachers and students of the liturgy, but also to those who daily confront the challenges of the future on a pastoral level.
