Book excerpt: A classic work of American literature that has not stopped changing minds and lives since it burst onto the literary scene, The Things They Carried is a ground-breaking meditation on war, memory, imagination, and the redemptive power of storytelling. The Things They Carried depicts the men of Alpha Company: Jimmy Cross, Henry Dobbins, Rat Kiley, Mitchell Sanders, Norman Bowker, Kiowa, and the character Tim O’Brien, who has survived his tour in Vietnam to become a father and writer at the age of forty-three. Book Concerning True War Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concerning True War Ir would be impossible to find any one pamphlet which could fairly be quoted as representing the German attitude towards the present war. For German opinion is divided; not indeed as to the righteousness of the war, but as to the exact grounds on which the German Government was justified in taking the initiative. A Bernhardi or a Harden disdains the plea of self-defence other German writers insist that Germany took up arms because her existence as a Great Power was at stake. The second school is, however, the more numerous; and to it belong most of the leaders of German academic thought. The views of this school are forcibly pre sented in the following address, which was delivered by Professor Wundt at Leipzig in September. It is desir able that the English public should have the opportunity of studying at first-hand the political ideas and judge ments which find favour with Germans regarded in their own country as men of moderate and balanced views. Englishmen who are unfamiliar with the German literature of the war may be surprised that a critic. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The True History of the Civil War Classic Reprint

Download or read book The True History of the Civil War Classic Reprint written by Guy Carleton Lee and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The True History of the Civil War The burden of authorship is indeed heavy, but the responsibility of title-making is insupportable. Therefore, while I bear the onus that may fall upon me because of the contents of this book, I leave to my publishers the credit - or the blame that may come from the title which they have selected. Presumptuous, no doubt, I am to attempt to crowd within the space at my command a his tory of the Civil War, but, believe me, to my sins of commission cannot be added that of arrogantly assuming that this book of mine is the only true history of the war between the States. Indeed, so clearly do I recognize the futility of such a claim, that here, in all humility and gratitude, I express my obligations to the distinguished historians and the score and more of patient students whose re searches have made my work the easier, as well as to those persons who have placed at my disposal the original sources upon which I in great part rely; and I am especially indebted to W. R. Gar rett, oi Nashville, Oakley P. Haines, of Baltimore, and Alfred Brittain, of Newark, not only for their kindness in reading the proof of this volume, but for the many helpful suggestions made by them. When Davis wrote his story about this youth with the scar - his last story, called "The Deserter," which appeared in the September number of the Metropolitan Magazine - we were all in so much doubt whether the one scar was honorable or not that Davis did not even mention the scar in what he wrote. Book The War of the Sixties Classic Reprint

Download or read book The War of the Sixties Classic Reprint written by E. R. Hutchins and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-08 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War of the 'Sixties With the large number of books on our library shelves containing such a vast amount of information concerning the four years of war between the North and the South, it would seem almost presumptuous to attempt to add to it, yet it is hoped that this volume will be an addition, of both interest and value. There are some of the survivors of that war who think that they can give a detailed history of it, with minute descriptions of all the engagements they were in. The Editor gravely doubts this assumption. That there are a very large number who were especially impressed with one or more incidents there is no doubt. To such I have appealed for contributions, and from such only have I accepted articles for publication. My aim has been to collect real incidents - real facts from real participants - from persons who were there. These pages are not sectional, for it will be found that both the Union soldier and the Confederate have contributed. But two or three of the articles have been published before. One or two appeared several years ago in Harper's Weekly, but the manuscripts of these were sent to me by the authors, and Harper & Brothers kindly permitted their use here. To both I am indebted, as, indeed, I am indebted to all contributors. There have come to me scores of letters from the North and South, conveying the most cordial good wishes, and expressing pleasure at the prospect of the publication of this book. I am particularly grateful to Mrs. Logan and Mrs. Pickett, - distinguished women, - widows of two famous generals, a Union and a Confederate, who, amid a busy life, cheerfully found time to contribute an article each, and expressed an earnest hope for the early appearance of this book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Turkey and the War This little book is an attempt to define the real aims of the present war. That is to say, we presume, that there may be a difference between what people, even people in leading positions, suppose to be the aim of the war, and What it really is. The current formulas on this subject circulated in this country may prove, on more atten tive analysis, to reflect popular feelings rather than immanent realities of the universal Situation. Book Addresses on War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Addresses on War Classic Reprint written by Charles Sumner and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Addresses on War Charles Sumner began his public life by what he himself called a declaration of war against war. His great oration in Tremont Temple on "The True Grandeur of Nations" marked, his biographer rightly observes, the most important epoch in Sumner's life. "Had he died before this event, his memory would have been only a tradition with the few early friends who survive him. The 4th of July, 1845, gave him a national, and more than a national, fame." Epoch-making in Sumner's own life, we think it may be safely said that no oration which he ever gave has greater intrinsic importance, and perhaps no other will be read so long. Of all pleas made by American men for the rule of peace on earth, it is the noblest and the most comprehensive, save Sumner's own later address on "The War System of Nations." There is almost no argument against war which these orations and their successor do not somehow make use of; and the advocate of peace in all the years returns to them, and returns again, for support and inspiration. The bringing together in a single volume, as is now done for the first time, of all of Sumner's three great addresses on war and peace is a distinct public service; and every philanthropist and every true philo-American will wish the volume the widest currency and influence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Years With Quantrell: A True Story Mr, McCorkle has more than lived out his alloted time of three-score years and ten, but his memory is still good and while he may have forgotten a few of the facts after a lapse of half a century, still everything related by him actually occurred. As he would relate his experiences and those of his comrades, I could see that all the sad and awful scenes of these three terrible years were crowding fast upon his memory, and I could not help but notice the changing expression of his eyes, which are of that determined blue, while he was relating these facts to me. it times, while describing some of the battles and some of the outrages committed against the helpless non-combatants of the South, during those four years of civil war in Missouri by unprincipled men who hid their misdeeds under the cloak of a Federal uniform and the Stars and Stripes, I could almost see the fire flash from those eyes and at other times, while telling of the death of some comrade, or the sufferings and hardships of defenceless old men and women of the South, those same eyes would fill with tears and the voice which had so often sent terror to the hearts of Kansas Jayhawkers and militiamen as it gave forth the rebel yell, would sink into a husky whisper. Download or read book On the Trail of the War Classic Reprint written by Alex Innes Shand and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Trail of the War These pages are nothing more than they profess to be - the story of ordinary incidents in an extraordinary state of things; recollections of the Trail of the War, not of the front. Hasty work is generally the weakest plea that can be urged for lenient criticism but perhaps in this case the circumstances are somewhat exceptional. At least, if the thing were to be done at all, 'twere well 'twere done quickly. This narrative being original from first to last, the writer, in justice to himself and his readers, volunteers the assurance, that any incident or occasional expression of opinion they may fancy they recognize, has been borrowed only from communications of his own that have appeared. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A True Story of the Civil War The enemy presently planted a heavier battery than Cowen's upon a hill on the opposite side of the creek and returned his fire; their first few shells, being fired at too high an elevation, passed over his guns at which they were aimed, ploughing through and exploding among the troops of the Division which lay concealed in the timber. Several were wounded, and the lines were formed for removal to some other position, but it being noticed that the missiles began to fall short of us, we were soon convinced that our situation was unknown to the enemy, and in a few minutes the danger was over. Book The Reformation of War Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Reformation of War Classic Reprint written by John F. C. Fuller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-26 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reformation of War Philosophy is a love of wisdom, and wisdom is the power of forming the fittest judgments from whatever premises are under consideration. Philosophy is, therefore, an evolutionary system of thought which has as its Objective the survival of the fittest thoughts. While animals progress through the struggles of body, humankind, as distinct from animals, progresses through the struggles Of mind, but with this difference: that, while in animal life every unit must struggle in order to sur vive, in human life the struggles of one great brain will, on occasion, remould an epoch. We find, therefore, that human beings may be divided into two categories-the masters (super men) and the slaves (super-monkeys); in fact, into creators and imitators. This has always been so, and is likely to remain so, for without the second there can be no opposition to the first, and opposition is the manure of progress, and progress, seemingly, is of the will of God. If the aim Of wisdom is to arrive at the fittest judgments, then, indeed, is common-sense the true philosophy of life. To do the most appropriate thing at any moment is what is generally known as a common-sense act in other words, common-sense may be defined as: thought and action adapted to Circum stances. Download or read book Discourses on War Classic Reprint written by William Ellery Channing and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discourses on War Ruskin, in one of his eloquent passages, declares that war would quickly vanish from among the civilized nations if the great body of women could once appreciate its enormity and unite in effort against it. The same thing may be said of the Christian Church and its ministers. With a common high resolve upon their part to be true to the principles of the Church's great founder, the Prince of Peace, war and the military system could not endure for a decade as a regular feature in the life of the commonwealth of nations. There is nothing so melancholy, nothing so discouraging to the worker for the peace and order of the world, as the easy readiness of multitudes of Christian churches and ministers to follow the multitude to do evil; to abdicate their ideals and high functions when their nation is once embarked or once bent on unjust war and turn with the crowd from the harp and organ to the drum and fife. The hard, severe, and unpopular but ennobling and commanding duties of moral leadership are forgotten, and the selfish motives and passions of the people are condoned and whitewashed, and mid prayer and song the worse is made to seem the better reason. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from German "Truth" And European Facts About the War It must not be supposed that we are satisfied of the existence of any francs-theme in Belgium, nor can we accept in its full extent the German View that, on pain of death, no man without a uniform may defend his own house or his own wife and children. We have thought it needless to enter on controvertible points. As to the charges of wanton cruelty towards Germans in Bel gian cities in the first days of war, we shall only say that, as made, they are too vague to be examined, and nothing has been heard of them in Europe so far as we know. If they were true, they would not justify or excuse retaliation in cold blood. All the world knows what has been reported from the smaller places captured and occupied by German soldiery. We hope, for the credit of humanity, that much of it will prove to be false or exaggerated. But, in face of the serious attitude of the Belgian Government, we cannot assume that all German hands are clean. No one can dodge it altogether. My years forbid my doing my bit with the sword. But I can wield a pen after my fashion. The wish of my heart is that the pen may in this case be mightier than the sword would have been. If it be true that words are things, and that a drop of ink may make thousands think, I would fain believe that these few words on "War Things that Matter" may not be unfruitful. They come out of my very soul; out of my love for my dear native land; out of my love for Australia, the native land of my children; out of my sense of what is due to justice, truth, freedom, and civilisation. All these are at stake; but all are in the hands of an Omnipotent, in Whom I can place unshaken trust. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
