Book Caricatures in Motion

Download or read book Caricatures in Motion written by Caricature Carvers of America and published by Schiffer Craft. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether running, jumping, or walking, subtle twists or turns of the body can ultimately give a carving a sense of motion. That concept is proven here. Caricature Carvers of America members offer up a variety of carvings of figures in motion. All of them are humorous and several carvings share a similar "theme." Among them are a cowboy on a "quick" trip to the outhouse and another who has been there, met up with a bee's nest, and is making a fast getaway. Sports figures, superheroes, dancers, a fireman, and even a surfing chicken are among the delightful characters who move their way through this book. Phil Bishop provides step-by-step instructions for carving that "Green Apple Quick Step." Suggestions are also provided for painting and finishing. Other chapters feature the individual carvers with information about them and their works, along with photos of the works in progress, and beautiful studio photographs of the finished pieces. Patterns are provided for readers who want to carve these pieces, giving them their own personal twist.

  • Publisher : The Monacelli Press, LLC
  • Release : 2021-04-27
  • ISBN : 1580935648
  • Pages : 177 pages

Download or read book Understanding Caricature written by Greg Houston and published by The Monacelli Press, LLC. This book was released on 2021-04-27 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A truly comprehensive and laser-focused examination of a really wonderful, expressive art form. Understanding Caricature offers artists, aspiring artists, students, journalists, bloggers, etc. a lively guide to an old and respected art form. A great caricature is one that not only captures the subject's look and personality but amplifies them significantly. They are almost always funny and very often (but not always) mean spirited. Eyes, ears, nose, mouth, hairline, cheeks, eyebrows, teeth, chin: There’s no facial feature (or any other body part, for that matter) that can escape the sardonic scrutiny of caricaturist and illustrator Greg Houston. But though he cleverly twists, exaggerates, and distorts each subject’s image, he always makes sure the person remains recognizable—an absolute must for successful caricature. Whether on assignment or simply drawing for his own perverse pleasure, Houston loves skewering the high and mighty—movie stars, moguls, politicians, and assorted other VIPs—especially when they misbehave. Caricature, says Houston, is a very sharp weapon for the powerless to use against the powerful, and he can teach you to wield it, too. After defining caricature, differentiating it from other forms of portraiture, and delving into its centuries-long history, Houston gets down to the nitty gritty of how to do it. He focuses sequentially on the face, the hair, the body, and what he calls “accoutrements”—distinctive items of clothing that help viewers immediately identify celebrities. You yourself will learn to poke artistic fun at the famous through a series of demonstrations that let you follow Houston as he constructs caricatures of Jake Gyllenhaal, Masie Williams, Dwayne Johnson, Rainn Wilson, and other notable victims of his wicked pen. But Houston doesn’t focus solely on his own approach. A whole chapter of Understanding Caricature is devoted to other contemporary caricaturists and the signature mediums they work in, ranging from traditional oils and watercolors, to digital drawing and painting, to sculpture and even puppet-making. And the book’s final chapter displays the work of students who’ve studied with Houston at his Baltimore academy. Brilliant in their own right, these pieces also demonstrate how any artist, with Houston’s guidance, can become a skilled practitioner of the caricaturist’s art.

Book Caricature and Realism in the Romantic Novel

Download or read book Caricature and Realism in the Romantic Novel written by Olivia Ferguson and published by . This book was released on 2023-10-25 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What was caricature to novelists in the Romantic period? Why does Jane Austen call Mr Dashwood's wife 'a strong caricature of himself'? Why does Mary Shelley describe the body of Frankenstein's creature as 'in proportion', but then 'distorted in its proportions' - and does caricature have anything to do with it? This book answers those questions, shifting our understanding of 'caricature' as a literary-critical term in the decades when 'the English novel' was first defined and canonised as a distinct literary entity. Novels incorporated caricature talk and anti-caricature rhetoric to tell readers what different realisms purported to show them. Recovering the period's concept of caricature, Caricature and Realism in the Romantic Novel sheds light on formal realism's self-reflexivity about the 'caricature' of artifice, exaggeration and imagination. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the writing and illustrating of this book my aim has been to produce a comprehensive and concise treatise on the art of caricaturing. It has been made as brief as is consistent with clearness and complete' ness. Although the text is brief, no illustrations Ttfere spared. The many plates illustrate all points necessary, and each of the points illustrated are explained in the text with reference to that particular illustration. In addition to the plates there are many caricatures of famous men included. Acting upon the assumption that it is easier to work if ones assignments are already made, Chapter XII has been made up of assignments and suggestions, which makes this book a complete course in caricaturing. If you obtain half as much pleasure and profit from the use of this book as I derived from writing, and especially illustrating it, I shall consider my time well spent. Wishing you much success. The necessary material used in drawing caricatures are few and inexpensive if we compare them to the tools of some of the professions, such as surgery, etc. The student of caricaturing should procure a number of drawing pens in various sizes. The student, or, prospective student is advised to obtain some of these, because every artist should learn to manipulate the lettering pen and brush in lettering. Nearly -all art work requires more or less hand lettering. Other materials needed are, black waterproof drawing ink Higgins is very good and pencils for sketching arid drawing. All drawings should be completely drawn with pencil before drawing in ink. Art gum erasers, thumb tacks for fastening the drawing paper or board to the drawing board will also be needed. The most satisfactory material to make the drawings on is a good grade of Bristoli Board. But if the drawings are not intended for publication, a good quality of heavy, hard surface bond paper gives satisfactory results, and is also very good for sketching. Caricaturing requires a great deal of sketching, and one should keep a supply of good paper for this purpose, to record ideas and impressions before they escape from the mind never to return from that oblivion where all things mental and material eventually go. Book The Art of Controversy

Download or read book The Art of Controversy written by Victor S Navasky and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2013-04-09 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lavishly illustrated, witty, and original look at the awesome power of the political cartoon throughout history to enrage, provoke, and amuse. As a former editor of The New York Times Magazine and the longtime editor of The Nation, Victor S. Navasky knows just how transformative—and incendiary—cartoons can be. Here Navasky guides readers through some of the greatest cartoons ever created, including those by George Grosz, David Levine, Herblock, Honoré Daumier, and Ralph Steadman. He recounts how cartoonists and caricaturists have been censored, threatened, incarcerated, and even murdered for their art, and asks what makes this art form, too often dismissed as trivial, so uniquely poised to affect our minds and our hearts. Drawing on his own encounters with would-be censors, interviews with cartoonists, and historical archives from cartoon museums across the globe, Navasky examines the political cartoon as both art and polemic over the centuries. We see afresh images most celebrated for their artistic merit (Picasso's Guernica, Goya's "Duendecitos"), images that provoked outrage (the 2008 Barry Blitt New Yorker cover, which depicted the Obamas as a Muslim and a Black Power militant fist-bumping in the Oval Office), and those that have dictated public discourse (Herblock’s defining portraits of McCarthyism, the Nazi periodical Der Stürmer’s anti-Semitic caricatures). Navasky ties together these and other superlative genre examples to reveal how political cartoons have been not only capturing the zeitgeist throughout history but shaping it as well—and how the most powerful cartoons retain the ability to shock, gall, and inspire long after their creation. Here Victor S. Navasky brilliantly illuminates the true power of one of our most enduringly vital forms of artistic expression.
