Book Pre 1841 Censuses Population Listings in the British Isles

Download or read book Pre 1841 Censuses Population Listings in the British Isles written by Colin R. Chapman and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 1998 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It has long been an article of faith that the census of 1841 was the first British census to list the names of individuals. In nearly 90 pages of text, accompanied by unique notes and references to original documents, Mr. Chapman explodes this myth by describing hundreds of pre-1841 name lists (censuses, poll lists, national surveys, tax lists, parish enumerations, etc.), explaining most of them, as far as possible, in their historical framework. As logic would dictate, the work follows a chronological pattern, and for this new fifth edition the author has appended, in Appendix I, a county-by-county breakdown of the various censuses containing individuals' names with the dates of those censuses; and for completeness, in Appendix II, he has added a list of decennial censuses containing names of individuals from 1801 to 1831. This new fifth edition, completely rewritten, incorporates over 200 additional listings for Ireland, making it a unique chronological account of censuses and enumerations in the British Isles from 1086 to 1841"--Publisher's description.

Book Political Economy and the Novel

Download or read book Political Economy and the Novel written by Sarah Comyn and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-04 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political Economy and the Novel: A Literary History of ‘Homo Economicus’ provides a transhistorical account of homo economicus (economic man), demonstrating this figure’s significance to economic theory and the Anglo-American novel over a 250-year period. Beginning with Adam Smith’s seminal texts – Theory of Moral Sentiments and The Wealth of Nations – and Henry Fielding’s A History of Tom Jones, this book combines the methodologies of new historicism and new economic criticism to investigate the evolution of the homo economicus model as it traverses through Ricardian economics and Jane Austen’s Sanditon; J. S. Mill and Charles Dickens’ engagement with mid-Victorian dualities; Keynesianism and Mrs Dalloway’s exploration of post-war consumer impulses; the a/moralistic discourses of Friedrich von Hayek, and Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged; and finally the virtual crises of the twenty-first century financial market and Don DeLillo’s Cosmopolis. Through its sustained comparative analysis of literary and economic discourses, this book transforms our understanding of the genre of the novel and offers critical new understandings of literary value, cultural capital and the moral foundations of political economy.

Book excerpt: National parks have always been an emotive and iconic symbol, ever since the first parks of the modern era were created in the mid-nineteenth century. This book, based on original research, delves deeply into their character and significance, and the larger context in which they developed. The book celebrates the deserved attractiveness of the parks as wilderness or 'spectacle' to millions of visitors, but also emphasises how there was nothing inevitable, self-sustaining or without cost in their magnificence and accessibility. Those early parks were a powerful unifying force as national 'playgrounds', especially as motor transport democratised their use. However they also provoked bitter conflict in their dispossession of local communities and perhaps deliberate segregation of people from scenery and wildlife. That first century of national parks, which concluded with the significant break of the Second World War and the subsequent development of more international approaches to conservation, left an uncertain legacy. It was a fragile foundation from which to build what became an integral part of today's conservation movement.

Book An Outline of the Relations between England and Scotland 500 1707

Download or read book An Outline of the Relations between England and Scotland 500 1707 written by Robert S. Rait and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-09-04 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 'An Outline of the Relations between England and Scotland (500-1707)', Robert S. Rait provides a unique perspective on the history of these two countries. Unlike other history books that occasionally mention Anglo-Scottish relations, Rait presents a connected narrative of the attitude of the two countries towards each other, providing the data required for a fair appreciation of the policy of Edward I and Henry VIII, or of Elizabeth and James I. The book also explores the racial relationship between England and Scotland, addressing the prevalent theory that the Scottish Lowlanders were "English in speech and manners" and even blood. Rait argues for a modification of this theory, suggesting that historical evidence shows a process of adoption of English manners and language rather than a complete displacement of the Scottish population. This compelling book offers a fresh perspective on the history of two countries that have long been intertwined.

  • Author : Scott Allen Nollen

  • Pages : 271 pages

Download or read book Robin Hood written by Scott Allen Nollen and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-09-15 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Errol Flynn to Kevin Costner to Daffy Duck, the bandit of Sherwood Forest has gone through a variety of incarnations on the way to becoming a cinematic staple. The historic Robin Hood--actually an amalgam of several outlaws of medieval England--was eventually transformed into the romantic and deadly archer-swordsman who "robbed from the rich to give to the poor." This image was reinforced by popular literature, song--and film. This volume provides in-depth information on each film based on the immortal hero. In addition, other historical figures such as Scottish rebel-outlaws Rob Roy MacGregor and William Wallace are examined. Nollen also explores nontraditional representations of the legend, such as Frank Sinatra's Robin and the Seven Hoods and Westerns featuring the Robin Hood motif. A filmography is provided, including production information. The text is highlighted by rare photographs, advertisements, and illustrations.
