Book excerpt: Teaching can be intimidating for beginning faculty. Some graduate schools and some computing faculty provide guidance and mentoring, but many do not. Often, a new faculty member is assigned to teach a course, with little guidance, input, or feedback. Teaching Computing: A Practitioner’s Perspective addresses such challenges by providing a solid resource for both new and experienced computing faculty. The book serves as a practical, easy-to-use resource, covering a wide range of topics in a collection of focused down-to-earth chapters. Based on the authors’ extensive teaching experience and his teaching-oriented columns that span 20 years, and informed by computing-education research, the book provides numerous elements that are designed to connect with teaching practitioners, including: A wide range of teaching topics and basic elements of teaching, including tips and techniques Practical tone; the book serves as a down-to-earth practitioners’ guide Short, focused chapters Coherent and convenient organization Mix of general educational perspectives and computing-specific elements Connections between teaching in general and teaching computing Both historical and contemporary perspectives This book presents practical approaches, tips, and techniques that provide a strong starting place for new computing faculty and perspectives for reflection by seasoned faculty wishing to freshen their own teaching.

Book Computing Professionals

Download or read book Computing Professionals written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1993-02-01 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surprisingly little is known about the people responsible for advancing the science, technology, and application of computing systems, despite their critical roles in the U.S. economy. As a group, they can be referred to as "computing professionals." But that label masks an unusually wide range of occupations. To add to the confusion, the nature of these occupations is changing rapidly in response to dramatic advances in technology. Building from discussions at a workshop, this book explores the number, composition, demand, and supply of computing professionals in the United States. It identifies key issues and sources of data and illuminates options for improving our understanding of these important occupational groups.

Book Computers and Networks in the Age of Globalization

Download or read book Computers and Networks in the Age of Globalization written by Leif Bloch Rasmussen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In modernity, an individual identity was constituted from civil society, while in a globalized network society, human identity, if it develops at all, must grow from communal resistance. A communal resistance to an abstract conceptualised world, where there is no possibility for perception and experience of power and therefore no possibility for human choice and action, is of utmost importance for the constituting of human choosers and actors. This book therefore sets focus on those human choosers and actors wishing to read and enjoy the papers as they are actually perceiving and experiencing their lives in a diversity of social and cultural contexts. In so doing, the book tries to imagine in what kind of networks humans may choose and act based on the knowledge and empirical evidence presented in the papers. The topics covered in the book include: People and Their Changing Values. Citizens in a Network Society. The Individual and Knowledge Based Organisations. Human Responsibility and Technology. Exclusion and Regeneration. This valuable new book contains the edited proceedings of the Fifth World Conference on Human Choice and Computers (HCC-5), which was sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) and held in Geneva, Switzerland in August 1998. Since the first HCC conference in 1974, IFIP's Technical Committee 9 has endeavoured to set the agenda for human choices and human actions vis-à-vis computers.

Book History of Nordic Computing 2

Download or read book History of Nordic Computing 2 written by John Impagliazzo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2009-09-19 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The First Conference on the History of Nordic Computing (HiNC1) was organized in Trondheim, in June 2003. The HiNC1 event focused on the early years of computing, that is the years from the 1940s through the 1960s, although it formally extended to year 1985. In the preface of the proceedings of HiNC1, Janis Bubenko, Jr. , John Impagliazzo, and Arne Sølvberg describe well the peculiarities of early Nordic c- puting [1]. While developing hardware was a necessity for the first professionals, quite soon the computer became an industrial product. Computer scientists, among others, grew increasingly interested in programming and application software. P- gress in these areas from the 1960s to the 1980s was experienced as astonishing. The developments during these decades were taken as the focus of HiNC2. During those decades computers arrived to every branch of large and medium-sized businesses and the users of the computer systems were no longer only computer s- cialists but also people with other main duties. Compared to the early years of comp- ing before 1960, where the number of computer projects and applications was small, capturing a holistic view of the history between the 1960s and the 1980s is conside- bly more difficult. The HiNC2 conference attempted to help in this endeavor.

Book Informatics in Higher Education

Download or read book Informatics in Higher Education written by Fred Mulder and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-09 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses two main themes. The first is, the discipline of informatics. Two major questions will be discussed: how can we obtain and keep track of a systematic and objective overview of the vast landscape in higher informatics education, both nationally and internationally? and would it be useful to rationalize and redesign the informatics curricula, leading to less fragmentation and more communality? The second theme is the relation between informatics and other disciplines, with the following main questions: what informatics do we need to offer a coherent curriculum which suits the needs of the actual information society with respect to specific disciplines? what is relevant in informatics and CIT to provide to others? and what informatics concepts, methods and techniques form the hard core needed in every other discipline?

Book Ethical and Social Issues in the Information Age

Download or read book Ethical and Social Issues in the Information Age written by Joseph M. Kizza and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-06-02 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook provides an introduction to the social and policy issues which have arisen as a result of information technology. Whilst it assumes a modest familiarity with computers, its aim is to provide a guide to the issues suitable for undergraduates. In doing so, the author prompts the students to consider questions such as: "What are the moral codes of cyberspace?" Throughout, the book shows how in many ways the technological development is outpacing the ability of our legal systems to keep up, and how different paradigms applied to ethical questions may often offer conflicting conclusions. As a result students will find this to be a thought-provoking and valuable survey.
