Book Work and Technology in Higher Education

Download or read book Work and Technology in Higher Education written by Mark A. Shields and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1995 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early 1980s, U.S. colleges and universities have become extremely important not only as computational research and development centers, but also as field sites for examining the relationship between technological innovation and sociocultural change. In spite of this, neither academic analysts of technological change nor the broader audience of computer professionals have a full understanding of higher education's catalytic role in shaping the so-called microcomputer revolution. This volume makes a major contribution to that understanding. In contrast to previous publications about computers in higher education -- most of which focus narrowly on technology deployment, use, and management strategies -- this volume takes a comprehensive look at academic computing as a sociocultural phenomenon. Conceptually and methodologically unique, it is the only collection of in-depth, mainly ethnographic studies of the "academic computing revolution" -- its consequences, meanings, and significance. Most of the contributors are university-based social scientists who have been at the forefront of studying computing in higher education, beginning over a decade ago. The volume consists of a series of case studies, developed during years of careful fieldwork and analysis, that document the open-ended, socially constructed, interpretively flexible character of computer-mediated academic work. Drawing on core ideas of cultural anthropology, interpretive sociology, and the social construction of technology, this book also makes a contribution to the growing, multidisciplinary study of technology and society. Work and Technology in Higher Educationwill inform not only educators and social scientists interested in computing and technology studies, but also academic administrators who want to understand the sociocultural context of technological change as a basis for better decision making.

Book Assessing and Responding to the Growth of Computer Science Undergraduate Enrollments

Download or read book Assessing and Responding to the Growth of Computer Science Undergraduate Enrollments written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2018-04-28 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of computer science (CS) is currently experiencing a surge in undergraduate degree production and course enrollments, which is straining program resources at many institutions and causing concern among faculty and administrators about how best to respond to the rapidly growing demand. There is also significant interest about what this growth will mean for the future of CS programs, the role of computer science in academic institutions, the field as a whole, and U.S. society more broadly. Assessing and Responding to the Growth of Computer Science Undergraduate Enrollments seeks to provide a better understanding of the current trends in computing enrollments in the context of past trends. It examines drivers of the current enrollment surge, relationships between the surge and current and potential gains in diversity in the field, and the potential impacts of responses to the increased demand for computing in higher education, and it considers the likely effects of those responses on students, faculty, and institutions. This report provides recommendations for what institutions of higher education, government agencies, and the private sector can do to respond to the surge and plan for a strong and sustainable future for the field of CS in general, the health of the institutions of higher education, and the prosperity of the nation.

Book Digitalization of Higher Education using Cloud Computing

Download or read book Digitalization of Higher Education using Cloud Computing written by S. L. Gupta and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-12-28 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digitalization of Higher Education using Cloud Computing: Implications, Risk, and Challenges provides an insight into the latest technology and tools being used to explore learning in Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs). Cloud computing, being an up-and-coming technology, integrates with academia and industry, thereby enhancing the quality of education. The opportunities and challenges faced by HEIs in recent times due to technological disruptions have forced both academia and industry to realign their strategies for survival and growth. With the acceleration of cloud computing in higher education, it has now become imperative for educators to constantly upskill and reskill in order to meet the requirements of the future of work, particularly in the digital age. Technological advancement is an unstoppable wave and the lack of relevant skills to handle the disruptions in higher education will become a huge challenge if not addressed promptly. This is the new phase of Education 4.0 where HEIs are aligning themselves using cloud computing implications, and thus are preparing both faculties and students to embrace the changes happening in the teaching and learning processes. This book focuses on multi-faceted strategies to be adopted by HEIs to deal with the emerging issues related to teaching–learning processes using cloud computing, technological interventions, curriculum overhaul, experiential learning, multi-disciplinary approaches, and continuous innovations and digitalization. The book offers comprehensive coverage of many academic areas, with the most essential topics including: • Pedagogies in digital education using a cloud environment • Risks and challenges in cloud platforms for teaching and learning • Collaborative and group learning in a cloud environment • Enhancing quality of education using e-learning methodologies The sections in this book are "Cloud Enabled Digitalization of Higher Education" and "Innovations and Applications of Digitalization of Higher Education: A Cloud Perspective". The book will be useful for undergraduates, graduates, academicians, scholars, and policy makers. It will help readers acquire skills for a smooth transition from face-to-face teaching to cloud-based teaching.

Book Closing the Gap Between Technology and Application

Download or read book Closing the Gap Between Technology and Application written by Taylor & Francis Group and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-04-28 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive study of five major areas of computer application in higher education presents the viewpoints of both purveyors and users of computer technology. The material is based on the EDUCOM 1977 Fall Conference. In the initial chapters of the book, Peter Roll and C. A, Conover offer a general perspective on the use of computing in higher education, noting that the use of small machines in a distributed fashion is changing the organization and application of computers on campus today. In succeeding chapters, the highlighted areas--office automation, distributed academic computing, distributed administrative computing, instructional systems, and information resources--are each examined with a three-part approach. First, technical issues related to the specific area are presented, then administrative issues are explored, and finally a reaction and overview are provided. The contributors recognize the gap that exists between the potential of computer technology for higher education and the reality of current applications; they all identify specific problems in their areas and suggest approaches to solving those problems. The concluding chapter addresses the technology transfer process in colleges and universities. Donald Smith advances the theory that the compatability of new technologies in distributed computing with the traditional distributed nature of higher education may well contribute to the rapid and effective use of computers in higher education.
