Book Study to Examine Handheld Computers for Gathering and Managing Fire Inspection Data in the Mount Prospect Fire Department

Download or read book Study to Examine Handheld Computers for Gathering and Managing Fire Inspection Data in the Mount Prospect Fire Department written by Paul R. Valentine and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem was the Mount Prospect Fire Department had not evaluated handheld computers for gathering and managing fire inspection data. The purpose of this applied research project was to examine using handheld computers to gather and manage fire inspection data. Descriptive research was used to answer the following questions: 1) What methods do other fire departments use to gather and manage fire inspection data? 2) What are the advantages and disadvantages of using handheld computers to gather and manage fire inspection data? 3) What types and how could handheld computers be used in the Mount Prospect Fire Department to gather and manage fire inspection data? The research was accomplished through a literature review, personal interviews, and surveys of fire departments in the Chicago area. Literature searches were initiated at the National Emergency Training Center's (NETC) Learning Resource Center, the public library system of the City of Naperville, Illinois and the library of Illinois Benedictine University located in Lisle, Illinois. Extensive searches were also conducted online through Internet search engines to identify current documentation of the research topic. The results of the research indicated many fire departments were using software to manage fire inspection data. There were few fire departments in the Chicago area that used handheld computers to gather fire inspection data. Handheld computers improved productivity by eliminating redundant data entry. Handheld computers were also utilized for other functions such as pre-plan development. Recommendations were made to use Firehouse software with tablet personal computers. A tablet computer is a cross between a laptop computer and a personal digital assistant. Tablet PC's are fully functioning Windows-based computers with touch screens and features that enable users to input and manipulate data using a stylus. Recommendations also included further research to improve Mount Prospect Fire Department's method of sharing and updating data. [STAR#: 136887]

Book Personal Computers in the Fire Service a Discussion on Their Impact and Use

Download or read book Personal Computers in the Fire Service a Discussion on Their Impact and Use written by Gary Pedigo and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the nation moves towards the 21st Century, Fire Departments find themselves caught up in the transition to an information society. Many organizations are rich in tradition, at times unhindered by progress. Leaders can be heard lamenting the "good old days" prior to computers, Federal Regulations, and the demand for more information and reports. The purpose of this research paper is to sample the use of Personal Computers in Fire Departments and to discuss some methods of utilization through networking. Most fire leaders are progressive enough to realize that the proliferation of these regulations, standards, requirements, and reports force us to move into the computerized world of information. Adding to this is the capability of modern PC's to handle tremendous amounts of information with more ability and speed than previously possible with a mainframe computer.

Book Your Computer Is on Fire

Download or read book Your Computer Is on Fire written by Thomas S. Mullaney and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2021-03-09 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technology scholars declare an emergency: attention must be paid to the inequality, marginalization, and biases woven into our technological systems. This book sounds an alarm: we can no longer afford to be lulled into complacency by narratives of techno-utopianism, or even techno-neutrality. We should not be reassured by such soothing generalities as "human error," "virtual reality," or "the cloud." We need to realize that nothing is virtual: everything that "happens online," "virtually," or "autonomously" happens offline first, and often involves human beings whose labor is deliberately kept invisible. Everything is IRL. In Your Computer Is on Fire, technology scholars train a spotlight on the inequality, marginalization, and biases woven into our technological systems.
