Download or read book Computer Studies Curriculum Implementation in Secondary Schools in Mufumbwe District in Zambia Success and Challenges written by Collins Masumba and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2019-11-12 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject Didactics - Computer Science, grade: B, University of Zambia, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the Computer Studies Curriculum implementation in rural secondary schools of Zambia’s Mufumbwe district. This study was guided by the following questions: What facilities and equipment are available for the implementation of the Computer Studies Curriculum in selected secondary schools of Mufumbwe district? Are there enough qualified teachers to enhance the effective implementation of the Computer Studies Curriculum? How appropriate are the teaching methodologies in the implementation of the Computer Studies Curriculum? What are the head teachers’, teachers’, learners’ and parents’ views on the teaching of Computer Studies? Globalisation and technological development in the world have accelerated and created a new global economy fuelled by information and driven by innovations. One way in which information spreads is by the use of computers. In the 2013 revised curriculum, the Ministry of General Education in Zambia introduced Computer Studies into the education system. The few studies in this area were done in urban areas. The rural setting has been ignored as regards to implementation of Computer Studies Curriculum. Mufumbwe district being a rural setting is a special case especially in a Zambian context considering development trends in Zambia. Specifically, the study sought to establish the availability of facilities and equipment for the implementation of Computer Studies, find out the availability of qualified Computer Studies teachers, examine the appropriateness of teaching methods and establish the views of Head Teachers, teachers, learners and parents on the implementation of Computer Studies in Secondary Schools in Mufumbwe district. Lack of computer skills among learners in Zambia may hinder technological advancement and fail to achieve the national ICT policy goal of 2007 which introduced CS as an enabler in a diversified and export-oriented economy, capable to improve livelihoods and protect the vulnerable through service delivery and provide an efficient and effective public sector. Further, Zambia may fail to achieve the vision 2030 whose vision is to have a prosperous middle-income nation through having a technologically proficient, fully able to adapt, innovate and invest using its human and natural resources. It was therefore important that this study was conducted in order to investigate how CSC was being implemented in rural secondary schools in Mufumbwe district.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2012 in the subject Politics - Region: Africa, grade: A, ( Atlantic International University ) (School of Business and Economics), course: Public Policy and Programme Management, language: English, abstract: The paper provides an analysis on the Decentralization policy implementation process and its challenges in line with stakeholder concerns on its practicality in Zambia. Specifically, the paper explores the insights of the policy and its feasibility in terms of implementation issues and strategies vital to its successful implementation. The paper further validates the realization of the policy in contrast to its implementation being viewed as a mere political rhetoric. The paper emphasizes that policy by itself cannot solve a specific public problem not until it is practically implemented. The paper agrees with the notion that decentralization is indeed a step forward for Zambia. The paper concludes that the Government’s commitment to implement the decentralization policy as a priority still remains to be seen just how practically the commitment was to be translated into reality or it could just also be another political rhetoric.

Book Teaching Intercultural Competence in Secondary Schools

Download or read book Teaching Intercultural Competence in Secondary Schools written by Eleni Stefanidou and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2009-10-29 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject Didactics - English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 2,0, University of Wuppertal (Anglistik/Amerikanistik), course: Cultural Studies on a Shoestring, language: English, abstract: Due to its importance in foreign language learning in German schools the subject of English carries the main responsibility to develop the students' competence for intercultural communication (cf. Göbel/Hesse). Accordingly, the KMK classifies intercultural learning as a key element of English language teaching and includes intercultural competence in the educational standards for grades 9 and 10 (cf. KMK 2003 & KMK 2004). Intercultural competence is described as contextual socio-cultural knowledge, the ability to deal with cultural difference sympathetically and the ability to master situations of intercultural contact (cf. KMK 2003: 8; cf. KMK 2004: 8). Including the cognitive and the affective level as well as the level of action alike, this description reflects the complexity of intercultural competence. The affective as well as the level of action are of particular importance if the teaching of culture is to be more than the teaching of facts as it was practised by the Landeskunde approach (cf. Nünning/Nünning). New approaches for an action- and product-oriented teaching of English are supported by empirical studies about intercultural sensitivity, which stress the relevance of emotions in situations of intercultural contact (cf. Göbel/Hesse). However, an analysis of the curricula of the German states shows that the main focus is on objectives of the cognitive dimension whereas learning aims of the affective level and the level of action are included less often (cf. ibid.). Moreover, many curricula lack information about which contents to use for teaching general aims like empathy, overcoming ethnocentrism and respect for cultural differences (cf. ibid.). Hence, the curricula are not sufficient for arranging a successful teachin

School effectiveness refers to the extent to which schools are able to accomplish their pre-determined objectives. School effectiveness transcends beyond students passing final examinations. According to School effectiveness has become an area of major concern for educational research from the sixties onwards in the United States. These studies have tended to focus on secondary school effectiveness till 1980. We aimed at studying a variety of effectiveness criteria. As in some other effectiveness studies, we explicitly studied not only student achievement, but also noncognitive outcomes. The mathematics and the language achievement was measured by means of curriculum relevant multiple choice tests at the start of the secondary school and at the end of the first, the second, the fourth, and the sixth grade. The questionnaire with regard to the noncognitive outcomes was also administered several times during the students' secondary school career.

There is a global awareness of the importance of the home environment on adolescents’ behaviour and relationship in the society. In Nigeria, most home are not intact as a result of issues of incompatibility of the couples, misconception and misunderstanding. The home lays the bedrock of development of a child in all stages of life and it has a greater impact on how they behave in the society. Adolescents from broken home engage in risky behaviors due to lack of guidance and affection from home which makes them to be less effective among peers, schools and the society at large. The teachers commonly describe adolescents from broken homes as more hostile, aggressive, anxious, fearful, hyperactive and distractive than adolescents from intact family.

Book The Challenge of Universal Primary Education

Download or read book The Challenge of Universal Primary Education written by Great Britain. Department for International Development and published by Stairway Communications. This book was released on 2001 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Department for International Development (DFID) is the British government department responsible for promoting development and the reduction of poverty in sites in developing and transition countries around the world. This paper focuses on the education dimension of poverty reduction, and specifically the attainment of the International Development Targets for education, which are to: achieve Universal Primary Education (UPE) by 2015; and demonstrate progress toward gender equality and the empowerment of women by eliminating gender disparity in primary and secondary education by 2005. Section 1 underlines the importance of education as a basic human right, a right which promotes other rights and responsibility that contribute to economic and social development. Section 2 defines the scale and geography of the challenge, noting that it is in sub-Saharan Africa that the size and complexity of the challenge is greatest. Section 3 posits the argument that the experiences of the past decade--positive and negative--point to a set of important lessons which should inform the work of governments and the wider international community, lessons that include the central role of government and the need for policies inclusive of all children. Section 4 identifies priorities and strategies for action, arguing that for targets to be achieved there must be sustained commitment by national governments to sound, long-term policies that recognize the strategic contribution of primary education to development. Section 5 outlines a broad, threefold strategy for DFID: (1) contributing to the development and coordination of international commitment, policies, and programs designed to achieve UPE and Education for All; (2) strong, well-targeted country programs that will provide strategic assistance to governments and societies committed to achieving UPE and gender equality; and (3) knowledge and research strategies and outcomes that will contribute to the ability of the international community to learn lessons, share experience, and monitor progress. Section 6 underscores the importance of developing capacity to monitor progress toward the targets, and for DFID to assess the effectiveness and efficiency of its contribution to achieving UPE and gender equality.
