Book A Framework for Assessing Computer Competence

Download or read book A Framework for Assessing Computer Competence written by National Assessment of Educational Progress (Project) and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer skills objectives have been developed for the 1986 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). These items will be administered to a large number of American students aged 9, 13, and 17 in grades 3, 7, and 11. For this first national assessment of computer skills, it was necessary to consider the existing expertise of school staff, the current curriculum, the rapidly changing nature of computer science, and educators' different definitions of computer competence. Generally, educators agree that students need an exposure to computing that enables them both to experience the power of computing and to use that power to solve significant and interesting problems. Measurement objectives involve both paper-and-pencil tests of cognitive ability, as well as the practical ability to use a computer to solve problems. Three categories of cognitive objectives include knowledge, operation, and problem solving and design. Eight applications areas include word processing, database management, laboratory instrumentation, telecommunications, graphics, music generation, spreadsheets, and models and simulations. Programming objectives involve elements of a language; structures of data and control; and program planning, design, and testing. A number of items are illustrated. Five items are also included to illustrate attitudinal objectives. (GDC)

Book Training Computer Skills for the Future Battlefield

Download or read book Training Computer Skills for the Future Battlefield written by May H. Throne and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As the Army moves toward a digital battlefield, the nation's defense will become reliant on the computer skills of its leaders, soldiers, and civilians. To embody this future force, Army training must successfully address the acquisition, retention, and transfer of computer skills. As a first step toward this goal, this research product reviews the literature concerning the acquisition, retention, and transfer of computer-based skills. A review of 76 articles examining the training domains of programming, software, simulation, and gaming ability was performed. General conclusions for each training area (acquisition, retention, and transfer) are presented. In general, the research does not build on previous findings in the area. In addition, many areas, such as the long-term retention of computer skills and individual difference variables, remain to be explored."--DTIC.

Book The Biology of Computer Life

Download or read book The Biology of Computer Life written by SIMONS and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The doctrine of computer life is not congenial to many people. Often they have not thought in any depth about the idea, and it necessarily disturbs their psychological and intellectual frame of reference: it forces a reappraisal of what it is to be alive, what it is to be human, and whether there are profound, yet un expected, implications in the development of modern com puters. There is abundant evidence to suggest that we are wit nessing the emergence of a vast new family of life-forms on earth, organisms that are not based on the familiar metabolic chemistries yet whose manifest 'life credentials' are accumulating year by year. It is a mistake to regard biology as a closed science, with arbitrarily limited categories; and we should agree with Jacob (1974) who observed that 'Contrary to what is imagined, biology is not a unified science'. Biology is essentially concerned with living things, and we should be reluctant to assume that at anyone time our concept and understanding of life are complete and incapable of further refinement. And it seems clear that much of the continuing refinement of biological categories will be stimulated by advances in systems theory, and in particular by those advances that relate to the rapidly expanding world of computing and robotics. We should also remember what Pant in (1968) said in a different context: 'the biological sciences are unrestricted . . . and their investigator must be prepared to follow their problems into any other science whatsoever.

Book The Internet Playground

Download or read book The Internet Playground written by Ellen Seiter and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2005 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on four years of experience teaching computers to 8-12 year olds, media scholar Ellen Seiter offers parents and educators practical advice on what children need to know about the Internet and when they need to know it. The Internet Playground argues that, contrary to the promises of technology boosters, teaching with computers is very difficult. Seiter points out that the Internet today resembles a mall more than it does a library. While children love to play online games, join fan communities, and use online chat and instant messaging, the Internet is also an appallingly aggressive marketer to children and, as this book passionately argues, an educational boondoggle.
